Snow Dogs (2002)
Some of Disney's BEST work! A BIG, FAT 10++!!!
This is some of Disney's BEST work, no doubt! I would like to see Hollywood ACTUALLY use Alaska in film, but British Columbia is a very convincing substitute. I think only those that live or have been to Alaska will notice the difference.
For the nay-saying crowd; you can't expect perfection from the fam-camp category. Put this movie it perspective with it's intent and it is truely wonderful. I would call this movie nearly perfect anyway! The only truely out-of-place cast-member was Nichelle Nicholes, and ONLY because she's got more of an elegent style to her than her character.
Those that say content was more adult than it should have been; you need to step up and realize that that interracial coupling and adoption are normal and part of life, and ALWAYS HAVE BEEN (This is not new stuff people). This movie is a good example for children who actually live in those regimes. It shows them they can focus on the good of their situations, rather than the bad.
And finally to those who say this movie is unrealistic; well, this is the most realistic rendition of Alaska, in film, I've seen in years. My town in Alaska is actually smaller than the one in the movie. We do not even have a store. The nearest gas station is 25 miles away. People are different, yet friendly, nice, and almost family-like! Yes, we DO have sled dogs here! They do not stay inside the owners homes though, but ARE treated like family members.
So for those stuffy people who didn't like this movie, either loosen up and enjoy life a little, or go back to your "Chocolate" and your other dry movies and stop criticizing the good FAMILY fun this world needs a lot more of! Oh! And serious kudo's to Joanna Bacalso. I've never seen her before, but she was simply wonderful and very natural. For those that don't believe such beauty is indigenous to Alaska, GO SEE FOR YOURSELF. Joanna almost had me thinking she was native Aleute.
TEN THUMBS UP! (5 people in my family!)
The Sea Gypsies (1978)
Simply Wonderful!
This is a GREAT movie! Highly recommended for everyone. I saw this movie as a child and loved it then. Seeing it again, now as a father of two, more than twenty years later; it is STILL a wonderful movie! Today's world is full of harsh news, disrespect, and a hardened society. This is one of those movies that will take you back to a different time when people actually cared about life and each other! I don't understand hendersn75's awful review at all. I live in Alaska. If he knew what it was like to live here, let alone try to film in this environment, I think he would change his mind. I think the cinematography in this film, especially considering being a 70's film, is simply wonderful. This was all done entirely on location, unlike most films of today. If you see this movie and like it, then also check out "The Dove" 1974, a true story. Not as visually stimulating as "Sea Gypsies", but very interesting also.
