Pitaah (2002)
Some good action
It was after a long time that I saw a good hindi action film. I was tired of the chick flicks and heros who threw punches but didn't draw out any blood.
It takes some time for Sanjay Dutt to rise to the villains. Except for the mujra songs the films does not go into boring time pass scenes. Fortunately there is no hero-heroine love BS except for a short unnecessary sub-plot of the villains daugher falling in love with a commoner.
When the violence finally starts it is good. Sanjay Dutt rises up and plans some good moves to carry out his revenge. Jackie Shroff is fantastic as a completely corrupt police officer. I just love the scene where he puts his lathi (staff) into the bullet wound of one of the villain's son and then twists it before taking it out.
See this movie if you are tired of watching Sharukh Khan dance and sing around or of Vivek Oberoi beating up a guy 3 times his size and still not being able to draw blood.
Pran Jaaye Par Shaan Na Jaaye (2003)
Tries too hard, but fails miserably
This movie didn't have too bad of a script going for it, but it just couldn't rise up to be an intelligent movie.
It poked fun at a few movies and the movie industry for not producing "hit" movies, but it made fun of all the cliches like slo-mo running by the "hero-heroine", but making fun of slo-mo running itself is a cliche now.
The preaching done by the voice-overs and the characters is too heavy. The sarcasm loses it's effect just because it is explained in words right after it is show on screen. No subtle sarcasm of the "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron" types.
The Sikh-Muslim unity characters were no better than any sampradayik ekta cliche we have seen over and over and again and again.
Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001)
4 hours of crap
when i went into the film, i expected the match to end at half time, followed by some sort of armed uprising by the villagers to overthrow the british, or at least make an attempt. nothing like that. the whole film builds up to one long cricket match.
the first time gracy singh came on the screen, i thought she would become someone else's girl, probably raghuvir yadav. i was shocked to discover she was the "heroine" !!
the english actor who was the "villain" looked more like a spolt rich schoolboy than even remotely dangerous or evil.
