Finding Forrester (2000)
Finally a movie with no blatant display of social stereotypes
It is so nice to walk into a movie and watch it for the story and not all the hoopla that accompanies many films today. Jamal Wallace, played by newcomer Robert Brown, is a 16 year old kid who keeps his intelligence to himself. He and his friends play basketball everyday with a curious stare from a nearby apartment building window.
Jamal breaks into this stranger's apartment and accidentally leaves his back pack. The man returns the back pack and Jamal finds all of his personal writings have been corrected. His curiosity is piqued even more now. He begins an interesting friendship with Sean Connery's character, William Forrester.
What I really like about this film is that there is no racial tendencies that scream out at you. For example, Jamal starts up a friendship with Claire (Anna Paquin) at a new school that he has received a scholarship to attend. Claire immediately takes to Jamal and eventually tells him of her feelings for him. There is no talk like, "We cannot date because I am black and you are white". Even in scenes where he is attending this prep school there is no act of racial behavior towards him because he is a black kid from the Bronx, but rather because he is a new kid on the block.
It is a story that simply plays itself out for the sake of the story. It is not filled with racial out cries. These actors all do an outstanding job of sticking to the story. I believe that if you watch this you will really be surprised. It is a slow mover, but one well worth the wait.
Night of the Comet (1984)
A Night that Rocks!!!
This movie is everything that the 80's was about. I love the fact that the girls are so good with guns, especially Samantha Belmont. It is a very entertaining sci-fi flick that is sure to give you enjoyment and make you feel like you are right back in 1984. The soundtrack is great, I wish it was available.
Making Mr. Right (1987)
Hilarious!!
This film was my first introduction to John Malkovich. He stars in a dual role as the straight laced Dr. Jeff Peters and the fun loving android Ulysses. This is one of the few roles that Malkovich has done that really bring out his comedic side. The story goes as such: Frankie is a publicist that is hired by Chemtec to socialize an expensive android, Ulysses, before he journeys into space for 7 years. There are also hilarious supporting performances by Glenne Headley and Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne). This is a definate must-see comedy!!!!!
The Allnighter (1987)
Girls Night Out!!!
In the Allnighter, Molly, Gina, and Val are in for one last night together before they graduate from Pacifica College and go their own directions. Each one is faced with issues that makes them re-evaluate their lives before they head off into the real world. Along the way with a great supporting cast of CJ and Killer, the girls find out just what is in store for them. A great soundtrack, too bad it is not available. I promise you that when you watch this you will be taken back to a time in your life before you really knew what life was actually like.
Hanky Panky (1982)
Comedy at its best!
Hanky Panky is our first look at Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner on the big screen together. The story goes as such: Michael Jordan (Wilder) is new in town, meets a woman with whom he tries to get a date. Nothing wrong with that right? Well he is chased by bad guys for having any contact with this woman and when she ends up dead he is sought for her murder. In comes Kate (Radner) who tries to help Michael find out why these guys are after him. Well he gets the girl in the end and everything turns out for the best, with a few laughs along the way. The pairing of these two comedians shows us why they have been loved by many for so many years. If you like romantic comedies then you will enjoy Hanky Panky.
The Mosquito Coast (1986)
Heart wrenching Drama
This is a heart wrenching drama starring Harrison Ford and River Phoenix. The role that Harrison Ford takes on is unlike anything else he has ever played. He takes his family to live on a South American island because he believes that America is corrupted and is going to blow up. The story evolves about the relationship between father and son and surviving the wild of the forest. This touching film is entertaining in the sense that you can feel the characterizations being played out by the actors. I recommend this film for any one who is a Harrison Ford fan and is in the mood for something a little different.
Urban Cowboy (1980)
Era of the Mechanical Bull
This is a smart drama about the way of life in a Texas honky tonk in the early 1980's. John Travolta and Debra Winger turn out two very believable performances as Bud and Sissy Davis. This film really opens up the country music scene and helped introduce America to the mechanical bull. If you love a good romance film, then you will love this movie.
Fortress (1985)
Great Survival Story!!
This film takes place in the outback region of Australia in the mid 1980's. A school teacher and her students are kidnapped by four masked men. They are then led on a unwilling adventure that tests their survival skills and transforms them prematurely into adults. I would recommend this film to anyone who loves movies that always keep you guessing, you will be surprised by the outcome.
Shag (1988)
Great Coming of Age Film!
This is a heart warming story that shares love and friendship of four friends from Spartenburg, South Carolina. Off on one last weekend together Carson, Luanne, Melaina and Pudge experience life as they never have before. The writers and film makers effectively take you back to the South in 1963, so much that you almost feel like you are there. I recommend this film to anyone who is wanting to have "the most fun" from a movie experience.
