Invincible (2001)

Tim Roth carrys most of the weight
28 September 2002
After a long wait for Invincible to open here in the US, I left the theater with the feeling that too much of Mr. Herzog's original film may have been left on the cutting room floor ( or perhaps not enough of it ). The cinematography is wonderful, as is typical from Mr. Herzog. But it is hard to imagine that the same man who gave us "Aguirre: The Wrath of God " & "Fitzcarraldo" would offer us this film as I viewed it. He chose to make the film with mainly non actors. The smart move was to choose Tim Roth to carry the not only the heavy role but as it turns out, more weight than the strongman. Mr Roth's performance is fabulous, keeping me interested enough to stay in my seat. Could it be that Mr. Herzog has found another actor with whom he can make great films as he did with the late Klaus Kinski?

A beautiful film to both see & hear.
9 August 2001
Once upon a time a wonderful film was beautifully crafted and the most exquisite music lovingly composed and perfectly played. How sad it was so sparsely seen on the big screens of the world, perhaps as it makes the cable circuit on our smaller screen more people will be able to see it and love it as I do. Many who are lucky enough to see it will certainly want to add it to their collection on VHS or DVD. Suspend your rational thinking, turn up the sound and let this film take you away to grand time on a grand ship full of unforgettable scenes and endearing characters. The amazing Tim Roth gives a fine performance as 1900, with the naivety and innocence one would expect of a person who has spent his life on a ship and has no real life experiences other than by observance of ever changing passengers who he grandly entertains. Pruitt Taylor Vince is perfect in his role as 1900's friend and the narrator of the story. Every actor seems perfectly chosen for their roles. If you would like to really enjoy a movie this is the one. Made to be exactly as advertise " a Fable" on a grand scale and a most unforgettable one.

Memento (2000)

You'll see it twice.
28 April 2001
After viewing MEMENTO for the first time, I left the theater with the same questions as most others seem to have. I also realized that Mr. Nolan , after working this hard to make the film, would not need to mislead the moviegoers. Thus, I returned to the theater the next evening & finally "got it". It is all there for us to see, there are no "goofs" and certainly no holes in the plot, just our minds' confusion. Once you actually understand the whole plot, you will indeed be able to appreciate the complexity with which Mr. Nolan takes us to it. There is so much to digest the first time around. Besides, the fun of the film is arguing about it with others ( until one person finally does understand it ). I hope to find a copy of Mr. Nolan's first film FOLLOWING, apparently a shorter film, which I'm sure is also a winner.
