another superb michael caine performance in thought-provoking film
22 May 2004
it's always a joy to watch michael caine . He makes acting seem effortless as he becomes his character. As for this wonderful and very thought provoking film,

read Roger Ebert's review on this site. He expresses everything I felt about this film perfectly.. with writing that I could never hope to equal.. I 'll only add that the scene of all of the old veterans marching and wearing their medals moved me to tears. Every role. every scene. is perfect. A film you will remember for a long time.

a warm, insightful film about a brilliant songwriter
10 May 2004
if you love the music of the Pogues, you'll love this documentary. If you've never even * heard* of the Pogues- you have a real treat coming in this film. (and this from someone who's kids are older than MacGowan!)

Another plus : after seeing the honest, often moving and funny scenes

and interviews of Shane, you'll never again judge people by their appearance.

And the songs are brilliant, indescribably wonderful. "Fairytale of New York" will be a classic Christmas song, up there with "White Christmas"

(though of another world!) If you get Sundance Channel, see it while you can.

Innocent Victims (1996 TV Movie)

realistic and well done on all counts
20 May 2003
this must be based on an actual murder and trial, as nothing in it is "pat" or convenient. All the parts, even small ones, are excellently acted.(just read in screen credits that it **is** based on actual transcripts, etc.) It shows how an innocent man can be charged with rape and murder , based on no hard evidence.Definitely makes you think.

unforgettable; a work of genious
30 March 2003
history of pop music, from the songs of russian-jewish immigrants, thru the blues and many others. Bakshi's style of animation may not be for everyone, but i loved it. charachters are very real, no hint of "cartoons" Can be enjoyed by the whole family. It's a unique work, like nothing else I've seen. And the glorious music!!

definitely suspensfull,with original twists
7 March 2003
Warning: Spoilers
I'm writing this so this film will have more balanced comments. more original ideas than most films of this genre, and does hold your attention .No more implausable than usual suspense films- except for one thing that bothered me (NOT a spoiler): while trapped in office building, why didn't they just call 911??

one of the funniest lines in film history
8 October 2002
Warning: Spoilers
i'm sure there are many comments on how funny- and original- the entire film is. I just want to add it has a scene with a line that had me laughing hysterically. This is not a spoiler, as I watched the film a second time, just for that line and scene. It occurs during the 1st half of the film, when Nicole and her film mother are performing a **perect** take of a scene together, and Buscemi's charachter tells his cinematographer to film it; I decided not to give the exact line after all; just remember the word "milk"! Buscemi is wonderful, as usual.

The Lion of Africa (1987 TV Movie)

long on violence, short on adventure
10 July 2002
Except for a few cliche scenes of Africans mainly at the end, this could have been filmed in most any rural part of the U.S. There's not much adventure, but lots of gunplay. And the only black soldiers in the film are portrayed as bribe-taking crooks. Yes, I know some of them are, but as only the one group(of soldiers) is shown, it gives impression that all soldiers/officials are. Also, can't remember any wildlife.

a haunting, not by-the-numbers film
29 April 2002
I first saw this film as a child, and was surprised that I remembered so much of it over 30 years later. It is an unusual story of children who end up on a pirate ship by a quirk, and their relationship with the pirates, who regard them as unlucky. Which turns out to be true, in an unforeseen way. Anthony Quinn, as pirate captain, is superb, as are all the cast, especially the actress playing Emily, the oldest child.

Forget any preconceived ideas you might have about the plot. This is a haunting, unforgettable story.

a rare gem: a film about real life, real people
21 April 2002
Stumbled onto this on sundance channel- what a gem.No wonder it's on sundance! How refreshing to see film about real people. And real lives have no "formula", and don't have a "neat" plot that ties up neatly at an ending(which you can usually see coming long, long before. Real life is messy, a lot more than good guys versus bad guys. See it if you can.

too many unanswered questions- like motive?
7 November 2001
nice little suspense film about Ford looking for time bomb planted by a saboteur on an open rail car full of explosives, and they don't know what time it's set to explode. Nice plot idea, but a few quibbles- like what was the saboteur's motive? We are told nothing about him. And wouldn't they transport the explosives in a SEALED rail car, maybe even with guards??? And though all I know of defusing bombs comes from films and tv, isn't it done by a bomb **Squad**, not one man? ( who seems to have no official position) Was the British Army out of town?

another great , real drama from Cassavetes
12 August 2001
A gritty look at New York City and dock workers. This is a classic film, realistic, brutal at times, always believable. It was originally shown LIVE on tv,also starring Sidney Poitier. John Cassavetes was a fantastic director and actor.

each image is indelibly seared onto your mind
3 June 2001
happened onto this film while channel surfing, and was instantly mesmerized. and didn't even know the title or subject. this is what great film making is all about- the purity of great acting and great filming. It doesn't "feel" like a silent film; indeed, you'll forget that it *is* a silent. Each shot is like a painting. It is the equal of any film made today, and best silent I've seen- and I have no interest in the joan of arc legend

the banality of evil

this is a unique, compelling look at the Nazi minds as they discuss varied ways to implement their "Final Solution". Watching this film , one understands the real definition of the term "the banality of evil".

makes you long for the old days of good films
4 May 2001
...and appreciate them; when drama and acting were more important than special effects. cornel wilde was an underrated director, and gives an impressive performance . It's really an ordinary film, made almost hypnotically watchable by excellent acting, filming and direction. the actor playing the boy is totally believable. and I can't resist noting that I recognized dennis weaver without knowing he was in it.

great reminder of when films were made for grownups
7 April 2001
clash by night is a great example of what a difference great acting can make. those were the days! story is full of usual cliches, but stanwyck, paul douglas, robert ryan, and a young marilyn monroe: wow!!! and it shows how sexy a film can be without any "sex scenes" or even a hint of nudity.

impossible to categorize; moving, brilliant
26 March 2001
happened on this film by accident, and was drawn in totally, though at first I had no idea what it was about. think of it as a voyeurism of a lonely "professional" woman's soul. Moving, unforgettable.see it.

a real hoot! many laugh=out=loud scenes
28 January 2001
Other viewers have given the plot details of this mock documentary better than I could. Just want to add that the film is truly hilarious- even to a middle-aged viewer who never heard of Carmen Electra! I still laugh each time I remember lines like(describing films) " The human female prefers stories about one person dying slowly. The human male prefers stories about many people dying quickly." Cheers to this highly original, very funny film!

deeply involving,intriguing- until the end.
28 January 2001
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this film twice- to see if there was something I might have missed that would explain it. Then read Maltin's review, hoping he could explain the feeling I had after seeing it that I had been conned. Well, no answer, as Maltin agrees . (Don't think this is a spoiler, as it's in Maltin's review) "The ending negates the entire film." Still, it's fascinating , involving and enjoyable to watch. Very original plot -which would have been even better with different ending. Not a film you'll enjoy more than once, due to ending.

perfect casting of james woods and dennehy make it work
26 November 2000
I watched this because imdb users rated it well, and I wasn't disappointed. The casting of woods and brian dennehy is perfect which helps to make the story of an ex-hitman telling his story to cop-turned-author believable. Scenes at woods" boyhood home, and his parents also help; Woods" ex-hitman character is written and played as a real, multi-dimensional person, not as a stereotype.. The scene about the gift in the plane and his wanting to befriend dennehy, are quite touching.

moving beyond words; you'll never forget it.
21 September 2000
Read Roger Ebert's review for plot description and more. He says it far better than I ever could. I can't believe some of the user comments that didn't like it. If I were a filmaker, this is the film I would want to be known for.

It is definitely not a children's film. Nor is it a "tearjerker" inthe way,say Bambi or The Yearling were; not that they weren't good. It's more about good vs. evil; and more than that. It's for people who think; who want to see more than car chases and Hollywood cliches. See it. You'll never forget it.

involving mystery/suspense with complicated & sympathetic villain
13 September 2000
The bad guys send a kid to a prestigious boys' school to find the student who is in the witness protection program, for the usual reasons. Of course, this kid doesn't fit in,socially or otherwise. He tries to befriend the studens in an effort to eliminate, by "friendly" questioning, the possible students on his list. Don''t want to spoil plot by saying more. The student "infiltrator", taught never to trust anyone, is presented as multi-dimensional, and is affected by the other students. Good suspense, excellent characters, and gives insight into how one's upbringing affects who you are.

as another user said, miss this and you're missing a real gem.
5 September 2000
just watched this again, and again found it moving, real, touching, sad, funny, and so many more of the emotions that make up real life; in this case, the lives of 2 homeless men. Danny Glover is perfect, as usual, and Matt Diillon *is* his character;now realize what an excellent actor he is.Couldn't stop watching, even though I knew it had no fairy tale ending. After you see this- and don't miss it- you will never again see a homeless person without seeing him/her as a *person* , not just a faceless ""problem".

no one mentioned Robert Pastorelli!
20 July 2000
just read all the user comments, which I mainly agree with; it's a cut above usual film of this kind. But surprised no one mentioned Robert Pastorelli, as the bad cop, who's acting is best in film. If he looks familiar- he played lead in "CRACKER" TV mystery series, in US copy of British "Cracker"

mesmerizing to watch characters change
13 July 2000
one of the best ensemble acted films I've ever seen. There isn't much to the plot, but the acting- incredible. You see the characters change ever so subtly, undr the influence of the rented villa in Italy, and love. And happiness. The film casts a mesmerizing spell on you, much as the villa does on all the women. Truly "enchanted".
