Burning Annie (2004)
Once in a while a movie comes along like this.
This production proves that it is skill and not money that determines the quality of a film. Seldom has such great entertainment come from an indy production. These crew are people to watch in the future. I can't understand why a studio hasn't picked up on this film and put it into wider distribution.
Showtime (2002)
It must be an action movie as the comedy is not that good.
Eddy Murphy and Robert De Niro should be a combination that results in a great comedy. Great expectationa often lead to dissapointment, and this proves to be the case.
When Eddy as a police officer spoils a drug deal being done by Detective Robert, they botch it so badly that they end up doing a live action reality TV cop show. Logic is not a great component of this movie. The super-gun that they spend the second half of the movie chasing down confirms it. A twelve guage machine gun that leaves large holes in sheetmetal and three will destroy a house in about a minute (without reloading) is as more a fantasy than science fiction. A five pound gun, firing hundreds of shots per minute without any recoil, is certainly the weapon of the future using the technology of the past.
It is clear this movie was designed for neither adults nor children, so if you are somewhere in between, this is the movie for you.
Gladiator (2000)
A grand movie that can only be considered as a "must see".
From the grand battle at the beginning to the final fight at the end, there are 2 1/2 hours of glamorous screenplay and some of the best acting to be seen this year. Russell Crowe as Maximus, Connie Nielson as Lucilla, Oliver Reed as Proximo, Richard Harris as Marcus Aurelius, and a host of other supporting actors.
And the top actors are needed as this is a screenplay written by a team, and it lacks a unified vision. Small production errors, like Lucilla wearing a bra, detract from the authenticity. Will the audience care? When character arcs reverse without cause, will anyone notice? There is so much action, and even a weepy scene at the end, perhaps they will not care.
Well worth seeing for what is good, but not for people with faint hearts. This is an action movie, and the violence is sometimes overwhelming, and the cinematic style taken too far. But worthy of a viewing all the same.
