Cowboy Bebop (2021)
WHAT TITILLATION! GOOD GRIEF!
The only fault I care to mention is that the show was cancelled prematurely.
From a writing standpoint it was brilliant how we were left to wait until the very final scene to see Ed introduced. That bit of titillation was meant to set up the next season. To do that to the audience and then cancel the show was criminal. Cancelled in favor of what? Some new, thoroughly iffy property? This series was made for a reason ... because the demand was there. It still is and more than ever before because now many fans are eagerly awaiting a second season featuring Ed.
It seems that, quite often, the money people are so bent upon getting maximum return on their investment that they become penny wise and pound foolish.
Vida (2018)
As a non-native Spanish speaker ...
As a non-native Spanish speaker I found the show very helpful. In the course of deciphering the lingo, much of which varies from the less-Mexican variety spoken here in South Florida, I realized just what an exceptional job the writers did. The hat must also be tipped to the show's creator, Tanya Saracho.
Doctor Who: The Haunting of Villa Diodati (2020)
Clever!
The writers of this episode took wonderful advantage to use the Lone Cyberman as the ostensible inspiration for Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' while simultaneously using the episode to explain Percy Shelley's mental anguish. Additionally, it serves as a starting point for the future cybermen story arc involving the Cyberium. Very clever!
The various Doctor Who stories which take the Doctor and his/her companions back in Earth history to momentous occasions involving famous historical figures and events have always been some of my favorites. This one might just be the best yet.
American Dad! (2005)
MacFarlane is truly brilliant
I couldn't recommend this show more. The level of wit is extremely high and the regular cultural references keep me constantly reaching for the Wikipedia app on my iPhone. The voice work my Seth MacFarlane, Wendy Schaal, Rachel MacFarlane, Scott Grimes, Dee Bradley Baker and the host of semi-regulars like Patrick Stewart is top-notch. The main appeal, however, is the biting satire. MacFarlane does a first-rate job of poking fun at the extreme right-wing. The black humor coupled with the anti-conservative premise of the show demonstrates that Fox is not simply a vehicle for loudmouths like Rush Limbaugh. This show together with more recent ones on Fox networks such as BrandX and Totally Biased belie the truth of that. The fact that this show is in syndication on two different networks while also airing new episodes on Fox should provide some testament to its popularity. The show will either be your cup of tea or not but there is no denying MacFarlane's brilliance. Obviously many people recognize this fact and that is why he was chosen to host the Oscars in 2013.
Saved! (2004)
It highlights ridiculous fundamentalism
Normally, I would hardly ever give ANY film 10 stars. I would reserve that sort of distinction for a film like the 'Godfather' or some other truly epic flick.
However, I rated this film a 10 because I am sure that many Christians rated it poorly, thereby skewing the ratings. I think this film does a good job of showing the idiocy of Bible-Thumpers.
I do NOT, however, appreciate the fact that the film conflates gun rights with Jeezo-Jerks. I am not a Christian, I am gay and I support a woman's right to decide on abortion. One might say that I am a liberal, but I do not support the campaign against the Second Amendment.
Kaboom (2010)
Positive portrayal of bisexuality
The actors were not terrible and the production values were not the worst, but the film was still mediocre at best. This is primarily due to it's ridiculous premise. Also, why was this film labeled a comedy? There was nothing funny about it apart from the fact that the whole movie was simply stoopid. It falls just a step or two above those lousy "adult" films that Cinemax airs in the wee hours. Sure the guys are hot (though I prefer pretty little Thomas Dekker clean shaven). However, if I just want to see some gay twinky-sex why waste my time with a lame film like this one? It might have been more worthwhile if Araki had at least graced us with a shot of Dekker's cute little ass.
Outcasts (2010)
Good acting !!!
Many of the reviewers have severely panned this show for poor acting. I think this is rubbish. There are too many people who feel weak and powerless, people who can conceive of no other means by which to empower themselves than to try to tear down the works of others. The BBC should have more faith in its own programs and stick with them. It needs to show dogged perseverance and forget about polls that claim to indicate the desires of people who eat too many mushy peas.
Footnote: My previous attempt to submit my review resulted in a message declaring that my review 'does not contain enough lines'. Whose dumb idea was that requirement? This, too, is rubbish.
Carlito's Way (1993)
Date of the film?
I am a bit perplexed. I am certain I saw this film when it first came out while living in Key West. I remember it distinctly because I left the theater being completely amazed at Sean Penn's skills as a character actor. I went to see the film knowing that he was in it, and yet, I failed to realize that he was the slime ball attorney until the final credits rolled.
The problem I have is that I left Key West in the late summer (August) of 1992. The date listed for the release of this film on both the IMDb and the DirecTV guide is 1993. How can that be? Is there some discrepancy here or am I suffering from early Alzheimer's?
Thanks, Mark
p.s. This review is useful because I have shared how impressed I was with Sean Penn's acting skills. I think you will be, too!
