Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Predictable? Yes, but fun to watch.
The script was not that great. This movie was definitely predictable. There were times I could predict the next line or action. No real character development! Full of movie cliches and cheesy one-liners or who can pull rank and slam another person the quickest or best. Some of the characters were interesting, but were not give the screen time to develop. I am not sure why they even bothered showing any of the relationship between Jack and Penny. Very boring. Although it was nice to see a relationship between a man and a woman whose ages were a little more closely aligned instead of 25-30 years apart. The best part of the movie was the technical aspect. I thought it was interesting that the enemy was never identified.
The Green Knight (2021)
What was the director and producers thinking
I do not understand why some directors and producers think a good film means that when you throw in some thoughtless sex and dark, cloudy scenes makes a movie good. It does not.
Really, did I really need to look at the remnants of a mans ejaculation on a cloth meant to be symbolic? No, just another director looking and wishing he could work in a little pornographic material. You had an opportunity to make an interesting movie, but ALL characters were pathetic as was the pace. Nothing really meant sense and when it did there was no point.
Also, I wanted to walk out, but I held on to the bitter end which was the best 15 seconds of the movie.
The Witcher (2019)
I tried, but no...
I tried to like this show, but no, I just couldn't do it. I finally gave up after the fourth episode. Actors were fine. The script sucked. Never having watched GoT, I got a feeling that this was another networks attempt of simulating it. Is it really necessary to watch people have sex in order to understand the plot? No, it isn't. Is it really necessary to watch several minutes of battle to understand the plot? No, it isn't. There was also way too much jumping from one time line to another with no explanation that you were jumping. This made it all too confusing. I decided to spend time watching something else, so I will not be returning to this program.
Pennyworth (2019)
Five Pennies Worth
I gave this five stars, but only because of the acting and the original premise. The pilot held a lot of promise and then I watched episode 2. Pennyworth is prime example of a director who feels the only way to get some people interested in watching a show is to throw in sex and violence. Neither is necessary to provide an interesting story which has been proven hundreds of times. I did not need to watch any sex scenes to learn anything about the story or characters. The violence, especially the disemboweling scenes (more than one) or watching a character rooting through the guts of a dead person was definitely not necessary. Too bad as I will not watch a third episode.
The Favourite (2018)
One star for the three actresses
That's it. Another example of Hollywood wanting to make a great porn film only with great acting. there were so many aspects of Queen Ann's reign and life of interest, but they decided to show the part of the love triangle between the three women. Plus, they did very little in explaining about her marriage, and what happened to the two Ladies. A very stupid ending, too. I agree that the music was bad, too. I was very disappointed as I was really looking forward to it. Period pieces don't stick around my small community as long, and I am very glad I didn't spend the money at the theater to see it, but got it for free from the library.
Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Several disappointments
I wanted to give this movie at least 7 stars, but the more I thought about, the more I realized I just couldn't. I was surprised that my five year old grandson enjoyed it, so that made me happy. However, the casting was off. I know people love Lin-Manuel Miranda, and I am not all that familiar with his work, but I was not impressed. He never seemed to get into the role at all except when singing, and that wasn't much to brag about. The back up dancers were hands down better than he. I never believed there was any chemistry between his character and Jane's. Speaking of Jane, Emily Mortimer, Ben Whishaw, Emily Blunt and the rest of the cast were wonderful in their parts, even the children. The writer's did not give enough to the role of Mary Poppins. After-all, she was the main character. A lot of time was wasted on the songs and the animation in the scenes with "mother's bowl". None of the songs were very memorable and neither was this movie.
The Conners (2018)
Watch it again
Do me a favor: all of you above who gave this show either a 1 or a 2 star review, don't watch the show in the future. Your prejudices came trough in your reviews so often that I started wondering if we all watched the same show. Perhaps the reviews were written by a group of Roseann Barr friends who got together to watch the show and came up with review ideas together. I think it's wonderful. I never thought Roseanne herself was a very good actress, just a funny character. Without her, there is more room for character development of the other actors and a much better opportunity for a lot more store lines.
The Son (2017)
Not worth my time
The Son, on AMC, should be a great epic show to watch. Instead, it is not. I am sorry, but watching an underage boy (I am guessing Eli is about 15 in the 1849 parts) have sex with a young girl in the tee-pee would be rape if the other way around. Another part that really bothers me is if Eli is about 14-16 in 1849, he would be about 80-82 in 1915. Pierce Brosnan is no 80 year old man. I only made it through part of the second episode and decided enough.
In the Bedroom (2001)
For a TV Movie of the Week, this is a good film
Oops, I forgot it wasn't a TV movie of the week. Even some of those had better direction and story than this movie. I, like many of the other commentators, am totally baffled by the academy's nominating this film for best picture and script, let alone the acting nominations. I think the other 10 people in the theater were just as surprised.
Looking at my watch is always the sign that the show is boring. I looked at it a few times, but my husband even looked at his twice within two minutes during the supposedly "thrilling" end of the movie. There were absolutely no surprises! I predicted everything from start to finish which sometimes isn't bad WHEN THE SCRIPT IS GOOD, but this script was not good.
The acting was good, however, any fine actor would have done a marvelous job with this script and would have stood out as these actors did. I am beginning to believe that you have to scream and break something (Spacek), or cry a lot (Tomei) to get nominated this year. The performances in A Beautiful Mind out-shined these performances and those characters screamed, cried, and broke something. But those characters I was drawn into watching, not those that I watched in In the Bedroom.
Leaving the movie last night, I was discussing how many scenes were just plain stupid (I cannot think of any other word that justifiably describes these scenes as the word stupid does). You must have a reason for showing a scene in a movie and I didn't see why were stuck watching so many of the scenes with absolutely no motivation other than filler. Some of the conversations we were forced to watch were insipid. I didn't care for any of the characters, not even the son. You have give the audience reason to care and Field did not with this script.
And what is it with a small town Maine doctor and teacher living in such a drab, out of date and poorly fashioned home as the Fowler's? Not only that, but they themselves were dressed as poorly as the home in which they lived. A lack of musical score added to the boredom of this movie. I know that sometimes, you don't need music, but it may have helped with In the Bedroom.
In my final comment, I regret spending my money on this movie and will not recommend it to anyone. I am sure other people would rather spend two hours watching TV than watching this movie. I am beginning to believe that many of the paid critics in this country really didn't see this movie, but were reading each others critiques and revising them for their own reviews.
