Tex, the Passive-Aggressive Gunslinger (2000)
Funny as hell
This is one of the reasons that I am so happy to have access to Independent Film Network. This short film is absolutely hysterical. The way Bob Balaban and Charles Rocket play off each other is priceless. My only caution is to be sure to listen closely at the end for the payoff.
Shrek (2001)
Suprisingly Delightful
I went into this film with low expectations. My youngest son asked me to take him, and not wanting to miss time with him I did. What a wonderful surprise! The technology is extrordiary, to the point that from time to time you have to remind yourself that it's animated. I'm struck by the similarities to "Close Encounters" when it first came out, in that it is lightyears (pun intended) ahead of anything else that I've seen. The difference is that this movie will stand up over time, which I don't believe is the case with "Close Encounters".
Bottom line is this: If you don't have a kid to take to this film, and you're embarrassed to go alone, borrow someone elses (just be sure to return them), as this film is absolutely worth seeing.
Dogma (1999)
Smith grows as a film maker every time.
Any movie that can make you think hard about our purpose in life, our place in the overall scheme of things AND has fart jokes is OK with me. I was terribly disappointed that the academy completely ignored this film, as I found it to be one of the 3 best films of 99, along with American Beauty and Being John Malkovich.
Smith's other films are worth a look see as well. Clerks was as good an indie as you will see, Mallrats is a cult classic, and Chasing Amy was an amazingly romantic film (in a very weird way).
BTW, I nearly fell off my chair laughing when Alanis came on the screen.
