The Gin Game (2003)
Excellent Performance
Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke were absolutely marvelous in this performance. The chemistry between them is remarkable. They play off of each other as if they had done it every day since the Dick Van Dyke show. A definite must see for fans of either.
For Love of the Game (1999)
Boring
This movie was so slow moving and predictable that I was actually counting the seconds as they ticked off of the clock waiting for it to end. On the surface it seemed like a good rental choice. I like baseball, my wife likes Kevin Costner. Within ten minutes, the entire plot was clear. There was not a single surprise or unexpected twist. I give it a three, only because it was about baseball, and the trailer and box at the rental store got me to rent it. If you need a sleeping aid, then this movie is for you, otherwise leave it on the shelf.
Jill Rips (2000)
Best to avoid this one
I saw this film under the title of "Tied Up". In general I have enjoyed Dolph's movies, so gave this one a try. It wasn't worth it. I have read some of the previous comments about the box enticing viewers. Don't be fooled. This is a poor film at best. The acting is nonexistent. The plot, what little there is of one, is very predictable. The movie in places seems to be chopped together. This one just plain stinks the place up. Not even worth the price of a cheap night rental. As a bit of a Dolph fan, I kept waiting to see him in action. By the end of the movie, you will still be waiting. Best to avoid this film, and spend your time watching almost anything else.
The Replacements (2000)
Made us laugh
Wife agreed to watch this one with me, just because she is a good wife. She doesn't really enjoy football, doesn't like Keanu Reeves, and is not a real Gene Hackman fan. She enjoyed the movie. She said that it was funny. Hard for me to praise it anymore than that. I, on the other hand, am a big football fan, a fan of Gene Hackman, and enjoy watching Keanu Reeves. I really enjoyed the film. Would recommend this one to anyone that asks.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
Deserves the recognition it received
As a general rule of thumb, I do not enjoy the movies that have recently been nominated for the Academy Awards. Apparently my tastes, and that of the Academy Award voters, just do not agree. This movie is the exception. Very, very well done. The ending is perfect for the story, and yet you don't really see it coming. Special effects, pace of the film, ability of plot to get you and keep you involved, everything you can think of is very well done. The actors do a wonderful job with their characters. Just can't say enough good things about this film. A definite must see for anyone that enjoys martial arts films, action films, or dramas. Simply put, SEE THIS MOVIE!
Autumn in New York (2000)
Don't bother
There are only 2 reasons to watch this movie.
1. You are a Winona Ryder fan. Her acting is the only thing worth complimenting in this film. She does a very good job with her character.
2. You need a sedative to help you sleep. The plot of this movie gives a brand new definition to the word predictable. The pace was s l o w. Better make sure you have a comfortable pillow for this one, because you will fall asleep. Other than the two main characters, there is no character development of any kind.
If you are a Richard Gere fan, as my wife is, don't bother with this one. I gave the movie a 2 because of Ryder's performance. My wife, who can't remember a Gere film that she didn't absolutely love, would have only given it a 1.
In short, this film is not even worth cheap night at the video store. IMO, do yourself a favor, and skip this one.
Any Given Sunday (1999)
A decent film about the game of pro football
This was an enjoyable film about the game of pro football. A good friend of mine highly recommended it, and he was not far off the mark. It really gives you a sense at the speed at which the game is played. You always hear NFL rookies talk about how much faster the pro game is played compared to college. This film gives you a sense of that.
The eyeball laying on the field was unnecessary. The full frontal male nudity, while in the locker room, caught me off guard. Not used to seeing that on the screen. This is one film that the R rating is deserved.
Overall, this is a film that I would recommend you see.
Anna and the King (1999)
Disappointed
I had looked forward to seeing this film, as the trailers that I had seen really captured my interest. Unfortunately, the movie did not live up to the tease. It was very slow paced and poorly written. Jodie Foster does a decent job with the role. As I am not a big Jodie Foster fan, this was a pleasant surprise. If you are familiar with King and I story, don't bother with this one. If not, it is worth a cheap rental.
The Saint (1997)
Decent film
A decent film. It was well paced and entertaining. Val Kilmer does a wonderful job in the leading role. By far his best performance that I have seen. One way that I judge a movie is how many times do I check the clock. Only once on this film.
American Beauty (1999)
Not my vote for best picture.
They say if you can't say something good about something, then don't say anything at all ................................................... Annette Bening's acting was the one and only highlight. If this was the best movie that Hollywood had to offer in 1999, then the film industry is in big trouble.
