Jol (2001)
Quite simply one of the worst films ever.
Jol (The Road) is an incomprehensible, pretentious and just plain awful film. The premise is simple, a film director is taking a trip to visit his sick mother and we are privy to his thoughts and encounters along the way. These thoughts range from a black and white film where one man shoots everyone, to his fantasies about a waitress at a diner he visits. Instead of providing insight these events provide boredom and the occasional thought of what you could be doing instead of watching this film. I will admit that the black and white sections of the film did look good, but that is a small condolence for this waste of celluloid.
Go-yang-i-leul boo-tak-hae (2001)
an interesting look at life after high school.
Take Care of My Cat focuses on five South Korean teenagers who have recently graduated high school and are now dealing with adapting to the adult world and trying to keep their friendship alive. The film follows their day to day lives and the difficulties as they try to adjust. Jeong's direction is very observational, you feel as though you are following the characters through their daily routines as nothing really happens except the decisions and challenges that are faced everyday. This film is not for the easily bored and I did find myself losing interest a couple of times, but overall it is a very interesting look at everyday life in South Korea.
Ame agaru (1999)
A beautiful film that is a fitting tribute to its late writer Akira Kurosawa.
After the Rain (or When The Rain Lifts) is a perfect realization of what was to be Akira Kurosawa's last film. It is lovingly directed, acted and produced with such devotion to Kirosawa that it is hard to imagine his vision being much different. If you are a fan of Japanese cinema, Kurosawa's work, Samurai films or just great film in general I highly recommend this film.
Khrustalyov, mashinu! (1998)
An interesting idea stretched waaaaay too long.
About ten minutes into this film I realized that there was no way I was going to fully understand what was going on. I usually enjoy films that challenge me, however about an hour and fifteen minutes into this film I stopped being challenged and just went numb. To give a plot synopsis is virtually impossible, it is far too incoherent for that. If this had been a short film I think I would have loved it, however at 2 1/2 hours it was just too much.
