Truly Disgusting piece of trash
18 July 2006
Against my better judgement, I decided to watch this flick with hopes that it would be a comedy worth a few laughs. It ended up being a vulgar, ridiculous piece of trash. The language went way over the top with no real reason to do so. The comedy end was something that a bunch of high schoolers could have put together trying to get some shock value from their friends. I certainly expected some sexual humor and innuendos but this bordered on a poorly written porn film without as much flesh. I can't even imagine what they had to cut out so that they could save this sorry excuse for a move from getting an NC-17 rating.

This abomination makes me really wonder about movie goers these days. I usually trust the IMDb ratings but cannot even imagine how anyone could give this junk a rating higher than a five let alone a seven. If only there were as many laughs in the film as there were vulgar outbursts, it would have truly been funny.

Even with the fast forwards, it was a huge waste of my time!

A Truly Memorable Film that All Americans Need to See!
29 April 2006
Paul Greengrass has taken the all-too-familiar events of 9/11 and has created an emotionally charged human drama that will virtually wring you out with emotion and yet not stoop to sensational melodramatics.

He made the decision to use unknown actors, many of whom were actual workers in their profession to tell a documentary-like, non judgmental story of how that fateful day went down. The amazing thing is how he is able to use these people to pull you into the story even though you know the eventual outcome. You truly feel as if you are on the plane yourself and watching through your own eyes and not the lens of a camera.

For those that feel that this film is being done too soon after 9/11, I hope you see it before you make up your mind on that. It is more of a cinematic memorial to those valiant passengers that will be an everlasting remembrance. It is a film that every American should see.

A LOT better than I expected
29 April 2006
The trailer does this film no justice. My family wanted to see it and I must admit it looked pretty stupid from the commercials. I've always liked Robin Williams though and went along for the ride. It turned out to be a vacation trip full of laughs.

The entire theater was howling throughout the movie. Williams was at his quick witted best and the entire cast just seemed to fit the film. Granted, this is a "roll with the comedy" kind of film. There may be a little bit too much "potty" humor, but it isn't anything raunchy like Wedding Crashers or other films aimed at teens. This is good for the entire family and will have them all laughing.

Some of the plot and a few of the jokes are telegraphed from a mile away but the strength of the performances and a troop of likable characters transform it from a film you merely wouldn't regret watching to one you'll actually enjoy."

A hint of the Coen and Hanks genius, but barely a hint!
1 November 2004
Wow, what a disappointment!

I was hoping for a bit of "O Brother, Where Art Thou?", and that is exactly what I got, a mere hint. Thank goodness the movie only runs 106 minutes because I found myself continually looking at the clock wondering both when it was going to get better and how long before this painful viewing ends.

Why anyone would envision matching the genius of Tom Hanks and the extremely limited acting ability of Marlon Wayans in the same film is beyond me. Hanks, though a bit wordy was the best part of the movie. However, even his character was flawed by "Local Dinner Theater" makeup that made him look more like a cartoon than a professor. His awful teeth and his bizarre laugh, make you stare at him rather than watch him.

That is part of the problem here, everyone is a cartoon. Instead of unique wonderful characters the the Cohens normally produce, all of the cast seems like they jumped out of some cartoon or comic book. The possible exception is Irma P. Hall, playing the elderly woman who Hanks rents a room from. She lights up the screen and provides most of the very limited chuckles in this boring piece of fluff.

The humor is hit-and-miss at best, and it is far from original. Even low budget Disney films would shy away from the portrait that changes with the mood of the scene. And "Irritable Bowel Syndrome" is something best left to Saturday Night Live skits.

Wayans language makes this almost unwatchable as it is so grating to the rest of the film. Hopefully, the Coens will get back to their usual strong fare and not put something out for no apparent reason next time.

Visually beautiful, emotionally draining, well done film.
27 February 2004
I had read everything I could get my hands on going into the movie. Thus I guess that I was more than prepared for the gore and brutality. With that in mind, I don't think that it was any worse than say, the opening to "Saving Private Ryan". Perhaps not even as bad short term but the film does assail your emotions for most of it's 2 hrs. I was pleasantly surprised on the creation of the movie. The directing, acting, and many other aspects of the movie were superb! It is a visually beautiful and has a very realistic feel time-wise. The story line was taken directly from the Gospels... well, most of it... There were a couple of issues I had, but I was satisfied with 98% of the movie. All in all, it was really awesome.

The actor who portrayed Jesus (Jim Caviezel) was perfect for the part and well done but is more physical role than anything. I felt that Maia Morgenstern as Mother Mary really stole the show, she was incredible. It did have some scary scenes, some graphic violent scenes, some heartwarming scenes, and some scenes that will make you want to jump in the screen to help him. Throughout the movie I jumped in my seat from the scary parts and the graphic violence. I also enjoyed the movie being in a different language with subtitles. It seemed more authentic. Going in, I was afraid that I would not like the insertion of the actor who played Satan drifting in and out of the film. I thought it was extremely well done. I felt the same way about the flashbacks used to tell Jesus story.

When the movie was over, most everyone just sit there. How I felt about the movie? Well, I felt as if I was leaving a funeral of a close friend... at the grave site. I didn't want to leave, but I didn't want to stay. Kind of emotionally drained. Many people were hugging each other and crying. I sincerely hope that most everyone sees the film and draws their own conclusions about it. I can say that I didn't have any feelings of anti-semitism, but felt that the blame of Jesus' death was shown to be all-inclusive of mankind.

A TOTAL waste of mind-numbing time!
11 January 2003
Wow, what a total waste of time and mind. The actors sleep walked through a mind-numbing script about virtually nothing. Deschanel was the only thing worth watching in the entire movie as the catty co-worker. I was so totally disapointed that I can't believe it. Aniston was no better here than on TV. She is a Soap Opera quality actress at best. Why anyone would write a story or shoot a movie about a Walmart Worker without a brain, I have no idea. Aniston's character runs her life by listening to her heart instead of asking any opinion of her mind at all. She is a thirty year old making high school decisions that ultimately lead her life to ruin. Why anyone would think that this film noir would be a comedy is beside me. Shot after shot of Joe Average in Middle America's Nowheresville doesn't interest me. You could go to your local chain store and talk to people and get a more interesting story than this. 3 of 10 and I'm being generous.

You had better LOVE Chris Rock...
18 July 2001
because that is the only way you won't think this film is a TOTAL waste of time and money. A remake of "Heaven Can Wait", (which was at least worth watching) is a poor excuse for a romantic comedy. It is more a vehicle to give Rock some time on film for weak stand up comedy which doesn't play well on the big screen. Especially because his jokes generally are supposed to be from the body of an old, fat, rich, dead man but are shown coming from Rock himself. As he insults Blacks and Whites the chemistry is all wrong. The movie is not funny, poorly shot the acting is weak at best. Go rent "Heaven Can Wait" and a live Rock video and you'll be way ahead of the game.

Wow, what a ride!
14 July 2001
I really had no idea what I was in for with this inappropriately named film. I had heard that the music was great but that was like saying that the Titanic ran into a little ice. Clooney, Turturro and Nelson were comedic kings and the Cohens rivaled their "Fargo" for regional humor. The cinematography was beautiful, the story just funny enough, and I sang the songs in my head for days afterward. It was a real injustice that this film was not nominated as best film among the Oscar set and just shows how little they really know. I was really impressed at a previously unseen side of George Clooney and will see this film again and again. (You have to just to catch all of the hidden chucklers!)

Unbelievable! (In a bad way, unfortunately)
30 June 2001
I know you have to check your brain at the door for these action films, (Not necessary for some of the goons that enjoy them!) but this is so way out there that no one could believe it. There are uncountable goofs throughout the film, the plot is childish and totally fake. The acting is non-existent, and the ending is the worst of all. This film is a total waste of money and time.

Worth Watching
24 February 2001
A well done film that didn't get enough acclaim. If you don't have explosions or huge special FX or whatever, nobody even hears about a film today. Excellent acting especially from the boys. It is a little predictable but very touching and humorous nonetheless. It reminds me of an old favorite," My Bodyguard" Check them both out.

Hannibal (2001)

I'm glad I read the book first.
17 February 2001
I can't say that I loved the book. I can't say that I loved the movie either. I can say that I'm glad I both read the book AND saw the movie. First of all, they are so different, it is like two different stories. A main character, Mason Verger's sister, is missing in the film. The ending which I didn't like in the book is dramatically changed for the film. I actually liked this ending better although it almost changed the entire premise of the authors ideas. Hopkins is fantastic as Hannibal, and Moore did a credible job as Clarice Starling although she may have tried a little too hard to appear like Jody Foster. I'm not sure I would have been able to follow everything in the movie if I hadn't read the book previously. Ridley Scott seemed to make the story extremely choppy, much like way the Hannibal treats his victims.

Very Average Film
13 January 2001
The best way to describe this movie is average. The acting is good but nothing special, the story has been done time and again. If it is supposed to be a tear-jerker, it doesn't even quite reach that height. I have wasted time on much worse movies but this one is nothing special.

This COULD have been a good movie.
8 August 2000
There was a great story in there somewhere but it appeared that either the screenwriter or the director decided that it was time to end it quickly and that is certainly the way it appeared. The film was fast paced and moving well but it ran out of steam at the end.
