Blow (2001)
The Boogie Nights of Cocaine
I saw a sneak-preview of this movie and loved it. Johnny Depp once again takes an off-beat character and brings him to life as almost no one else can. The supporting cast is excellent (unlike another reviewer, I though Paul Reubens was great), with Ray Liotta shining above almost everyone. The film takes place over the span of many years, and the aging process for Liotta was amazing. Being from Boston (where parts of the film take place), I was prepared for the characters to sound like members of the Kennedy clan, but was suprised by a decent job at affecting the New England accent. This film reminded me of Boogie Nights in the way that it flowed, if not neccessarily in content. The script was excellent in that it allowed you to watch a period of 20 odd years in 2 hours, yet didn't leave you wondering what happened during certain periods. Highly recommended for those into true-crime character studies or anyone who enjoyed Boogie Nights. There's a remarkable lack of violence in this movie... (there's one scene that is an exception), which is a nice change from the over-the-top violence that plagues this style of film. Anyways, go see it, you won't be disappointed!
Double Take (2001)
Decent action flick
I was expecting a bit more of bad comedy and less of a plot. It follows a pretty generic Hollywood "who can you trust" formula, but the stars are excellent. There's enough here for action fans to warrant a look.
