The Girl Next Door (2004)
A "Risky Business" for the New Milennium
If you are even slightly young at heart, you HAVE to watch this film.
Mr Ebert and the New York Times reviewer totally missed the point on this little gem--it's a kid's flick.
It is funny, wry, a little bit shocking... but overall, it is very sweet--and keeps surprising you.
I didn't expect much more than a run-of-the mill teen sex comedy when I tuned up 'Skin-a-'MAX to watch this film, but by the time it was over, I had a grin a mile wide.
I expected a good performance from Emile Hirsch, but Chris Marquette showed more breadth than he has a chance for in that CBS show. And Paul Dano's star is rising.
Give this one a roll, folks... you won't be disappointed.
Eyes of an Angel (1991)
They Got That Right
Having lived with Dobermanns since 1979, this movie catches the love and intelligence of this wonderful breed.
The loyalty and love of the put-upon male shows just what great dogs these are.
Highly recommended!
Full Frontal (2002)
Unmitigated Trash
Read Roger Ebert's review and save yourself the time you would waste watching this incomparably boring and vapid exercise in Hollywood navel-gazing. On a scale of 1 to 10, this trash rates a -999999999999.
Unconditional Love (2002)
Watch this movie!
Ignore everyone else's comments for this movie and watch it on pay cable (like I did) or rent it. You owe it to yourself. This film is what movies are (supposed to be) all about. Hard to categorize (and God knows how this was pitched as a "high concept"!), but this is one for the angels. Check it out. What have you got to lose?
I Know My First Name Is Steven (1989)
Don't Pass This One Up!
This well-crafted, well-acted made-for-TV movie breaks the mold of your typical docu-drama.
No spoilers here, but I assure you that you WILL empathize with the much-abused protagonist, whose life after the film ends proved to be equally tragic.
A true gem. Don't miss it when it replays on LifeTime, or if you can find it at a rental store.
Grizzly Falls (1999)
A mother grizzly goes all-out to get her cubs back
I must admit that I'm a sucker for this kind of movie, taking the "lesser" animals' side against the most dangerous animal... man I rooted for the bear the whole time--and worried what would happen to her if the father of the boy she kidnapped to help her get her cubs back caught up with her. Daniel Clark as "Harry" touchingly showed how his love for his feral captor developed to the point where he saw her as a virtual replacement for his dead mother. It's nice to see a film for general audiences that isn't the typical bland Disney fare. I voted this film a 10 out of 10.
Anatomy of a Hate Crime (2001)
A sensitive depiction of the life and death of a sensitive young man
Cy Carter, in his portrayal of Matthew Shepard, brought to the screen a layered portrayal of a sensitive, intelligent and conflicted young man. But this film doesn't demonize his killers... they are also shown as multifaceted human beings. MTV should be commended for bringing this story to the screen. It's about time that people understood that discrimination of any type is the antithesis of the American Dream. We shouldn't need `hate crime' legislation to control our interactions. Being of a different race or sexual preference doesn't really make one a lesser person, and it's about time that people woke up and realized that one should not judge another by any superficial differences. This film rates a 10 out of 10 on the `jay'meter (with apologies to Corky for the format).
