Low expectations = enjoyable film
18 April 2005
This is a film that I learned Sam Raimi and the Coen Bros. are not particularly proud of, but it's a film that I enjoyed.

It should not be a film that is taken too seriously, since it features a lot of light-hearted and corny moments, but they genuinely come off as funny. It does feature some anachronistic moments, but for the most part it is a movie I could watch several times and not get tired of watching it.

If people go into this movie thinking it will be a light, enjoyable comedy, then I think it will meet your expectations. If you are expecting a Coen Bros./Raimi film on the same level as Spiderman or Fargo, then you will be disappointed. It all comes down to expectations.

Rocky IV (1985)
Weak film that hurts trilogy
16 August 2004
Rocky IV is the first of the two "unnecessary" Rocky films. The series would have been perfectly ended after Rocky III, marking a strong trilogy, but it would continue with two more weak films that bring down the quality of the entire series.

This film goes where the previous Rockys did not go in which it tried to make a grand social commentary. Although Rocky I did a lot of focusing on the urban decay of Philadelphia, this film tries to do the Cold War commentary. But it makes the wrong one. Instead of commenting on the futility of both sides of the conflict, it simply puts all blame on the Russians, and does the classic "America good, Russia bad" motif. This film supports the idea that if the Russians open their eyes and stop being some oppressive, they will see the great glories of freedom and capitalism, which is an overly simplistic and biased viewpoint.

This film also fails with the death of Apollo Creed. It does what so many Hollywood films did up until probably the mid-90s, in the discarding of the black characters when their purpose was up, or enacting their deaths because they were expendable.

This film only works on the level that if the audience wishes to see weak acting, little character development, a kickass soundtrack, Stallone in great shape training, and a brutal gladiatorial brawl. Although I don't think anybody would argue that the Rocky series ever represented the pinnacle of acting quality, but this movie seems to be the weakest of the films at its time (of course Rocky V would completely blow it out of the water). The fight between Stallone and Lundgren is arguably the series best if judged on the level of two men just beating the crap out of each other. But that is the only redeeming factor of this film.

As stated before, this is an unnecessary film that should never have been made. Rocky goes through nothing in this film. In the three previous films, he had to endure in order to overcome. It's not the case in Rocky IV, in which Rocky is the same from beginning to end, the only change is that he no longer has Apollo at his side. Does Rocky IV entertain? Of course, and probably is the most entertaining of the series. The film does nothing but entertain us, there is no engagement. One can find the same in a clown or magician. So I suggest that people only watch the first three Rocky films, and stop there and consider IV and V to only be rumors, because it will bring down the quality of the series if viewed.

Nostalgia at its best
4 February 2004
I remember catching this movie when I was much younger only a few years after its release and I distinctly remember enjoying it. I hate it when your childhood nostalgia clouds your taste, and you remember it as magnificent, when with a keener more mature eye you realize it was in fact absolute garbage (much like many 80s cartoon shows). So when I caught it on TV (A&E) today spouting off to my roommate of its greatness, I was happy to find out that I wasn't wrong. This is a great movie. And I'm definitely contemplating picking up the DVD now. Although it's in the same genre, it's not the same as the other 80s High School movies. You should watch it, you'll be very impressed.

Excellent short film with little flaws
17 August 2003
I really enjoyed watching this short film. The crossover was excellent. The look and feel was very good as well. The only thing I think detracts from the film is that when Batman sees the Predator, he attacks first. I think that was a little out of character, considering that the Predator had just saved his life.

But otherwise, this short would be excellent if put on the big screen for a feature-length film. Although I believe Batman would have to enlist the help of some Super Friends in order to prevail against these odds.

8 Mile (2002)
Dark but interesting
8 November 2002
I enjoyed this movie immensely. I thought it was a departure from the typical movies that star Hip-hop artists nowadays, which typically glorify the hip-hop lifestyle. Which is a very material lifestyle. This movie was pretty dark.

I thought Eminem did a good job acting. I mean he's not going to win any Oscars for this role, but he does a very good job acting. If not for who he is, then you wouldn't pay too much attention to his acting because that's how competent he does.

As most of you already have heard, this movie was based on Eminem's life, but none of the events are actually factual. His relationship with his mother (Basinger) is much more amiable than it is in real life, or at least how it comes across in his music.

Brittany Murphy acts as his love interest, but most importantly his muse.

There are some scenes that leave you scratching your head. One of which is the Eminem-Murphy love scene in the plant. It seems out of place and bad for the pacing of the film. Also Taryn Manning's role as the ex-girlfriend is almost unnecessary. The presence of her character is a key plot element that sets up the film, but the appearance of her character in the film by its end seems unnecessary due to the fact that it is underdeveloped. I wonder if there were more scenes involving Manning that were ultimately deleted via editing.

Overall I enjoyed the movie. Some may not enjoy it as much, but that's probably because they go into the movie with different expectations. If you're expecting something other than a hip-hop based film that subtly comments on social/economic/racial issues, and is a pseudo-rags to riches story, then you might be sorely disappointed.

Double Take (2001)
Not very funny, but it was entertaining
14 August 2001
It had its moments that were genuinely funny, but there was not a whole lot of knee-slapping going on in this flick. It's entertaining, as some of the plot twists had even a movie veteran such as myself confused at times. Eddie Griffin is funny, but he doesn't sell as a sensitive caring undercover FBI agent. Orlando Jones doesn't sell as the "Uncle Tom" type which is originally portrayed in the beginning on the movie. He holds that persona for maybe the first 5 minutes of the movie, but it completely disappears after that. It's not a non-stop laugh riot with no plot or acting, which is one would expect when they see Griffin and Jones are the stars, but it has its moments. It won't win any awards, but I was not disappointed. But it's genuinely entertaining although you won't be rolling around on the floor.

A really bad movie that I can't help but watch
6 June 2001
This is a bad movie that I watch almost everytime it's on. And no its not one of those movies that gets better the more you watch it. It's a really bad movie with horrible acting. It's a spoof plain and simple. There are funny parts like when Guppy (Kevin McDonald) is riding in his limo and the headlights of the car behind him begin to move around. I suggest watching it so you can have the knowledge of how bad some spoofs can really be.

It's the worst Police Academy movie!
6 June 2001
This is by far the worst PA movie out there. It's not horrible because (like me) you are probably a fan of the other PA movies. This movie is one level above terrible just because it's a PA movie and has most of your favorite characters in it like Captain Harris, "Motor Mouth" Jones, Callahan, Tackleberry, and Commandat Lassard. The plot is really bad. There are some genuinely funny moments in the movie. But there are only a few. It seems low budget, poorly written, and basically everything else that can be wrong, is wrong. But I suggest you watch it so you will have the ability to say you've seen all SEVEN police academy movies, and can trick your friends into watching this debacle, just like what I'm trying to do to you right now.

Very funny and stupid movie
6 June 2001
Yes this movie is incredibly stupid. But it's one of those movies that is so stupid its funny. I mean you can't help but laugh at how incredibly dumb this movie is. Anyone that doesn't have something up their butt can enjoy this movie. It's a good movie to watch if you're in a bad mood, and need a few laughs to perk you up.

Very disappointed in this movie
21 April 2001
I was quite disappointed in this movie. Although as far as B-movies go, it is not a bad movie in terms of the level of acting, plot, etc. But as far as B-movies go, no SEX?! I mean really, what's going on?! You got a handful of scenes where the 4 women are topless and a very brief lesbian scene, but I was very disappointed. I mean when you see a movie with 4 attractive women (I am a big fan of Julie K. Smith & Nikki Fritz) and then you got the one horny guy, which to me was a beautiful set-up for at least some 3some and lesbian action, you get nothing! As far as spoofs go, it was pretty "spoofish." Overall the acting was pretty good for a SKINEMAX movie. The emotion between the 5 characters seemed pretty real so that is the only positive.

Hypernauts (1996)
A pretty good show
24 November 2000
I think this was maybe 4 or 5 episodes to the show. They were pretty good. A sort of mini-series. Would have been better if they had invested more time into the show. It was interesting, the special effects were pretty cool also.

One of the scariest movies I've seen
11 September 2000
This is truly the scariest movie I've ever seen. It's not the traditionally scary movie, when you have some guy jumping out of closets and slashing people, although there are some really intense moments throughout the movie. It's more scary in the way that when you leave the theater, you really feel your mortality. After seeing this movie, everytime you feel a gust of wind, you'll be scared.

Very funny movie that most will love!
11 September 2000
This movie is very funny. I laughed so hard when I saw this the first time. And it's one of those movies that gets funnier each time you see it. If you are one of those uptight movie critic-type movie watchers, then you probably won't like this movie. But if you are of the general public who judges movies on entertainment value and not how good the plot is, then you'll love it. I would recommend this movie for ages 12 and up.
