Doctor Who: In the Forest of the Night (2014)
Season 8, Episode 10
4/10
Capaldi great, All others grate.
25 October 2014
An eco-mess with almost nothing to contribute to the recent improvement of the new series.

Trees take over the world, There's some CGI wolves & a Tiger. Singular.

Literary culture-vultures expecting some William Blake will be left wanting, and to be honest there doesn't appear to be much 'night' here. Misleading much..? Having just re-read the poem, I can see some tenuous links to the majestic source material, but not enough to warrant stealing 25% of the 1st stanza!

Plaudits to Mr Capaldi, Though. An acting masterclass: just the right amount of unhinged. Ms Coleman & Mr Anderson still make an incompatible couple, but I have to admit he's a bit more likable after this episode. & altogether too many kids in this one.

But the next ep looks hopeful.....

Derek: Pilot (2012)
Season 1, Episode 0

The great mistake......
16 April 2012
This is a comedy that sets out to alienate the viewer.

Although it tries to pull heartstrings, All it succeeds in doing is creating a feeling of discomfort. The titular character is neither endearing nor charming, Those around him are either annoying or derivative, the direction is pitifully obvious & anyone involved should hang their heads in shame!

Not even the comic timing of Karl Pilkington can save this travesty, which is a shame, as Mr Gervais has created this "Character". The only redemption I can find is that it highlights the U.K's woefully lacking mental healthcare system. Oh, & Kerry Godliman should now have a long queue of agency scouts beating her door down. The only acting highpoint of the programme!

In a previous review, I castigated "Big Top", stating that it was unworthy of comparison to the sublime "The Office": Derek is on a similar level to "Big Tat", perhaps worse due to it's stablemates.

Another series of Extra's or more "Guest Star" roles would have been better advised.

Still, the "Gervais Money-train" rolls on, & my comments will amount to nothing in the great scheme of things. For IMDb readers: You have been warned!!!!

Knowing (2009)
4/10
I was happier not Knowing!
12 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I'm writing this in the aftermath of the 2011 Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami/Nuclear near-miss, So the.....

No, that just belittles whats really happened half a world away.

OK, it's well shot. That I'll give you. Nice SFX too....

Oh, & the cast believe in what's on the paper in front of them, too.

But otherwise, well, utter tosh.

How can 1 single parent see (eventually!) what trillions of NASA dollars miss? Why is the female lead completely expendable? Was this a 2-fer with Night at the Museum 2? I'm sorry, But Nick Cage in a different wig doin math just isn't enough to justify a whole movie. The "Contact" finale is just the icing on a very hard to swallow cake.

Oh, & the editing is a bit shoddy too!

If you want "End of the World" stuff, try "Armageddon", "Earthquake", "Deep Impact" or, for the cynical, Sky News.

Lets hope Alex Proyas gets a better crack of the whip next time: For Mr Wiggy, there's always "Ghost Rider 2"....

Doctor Who: Amy's Choice (2010)
Season 5, Episode 7
4/10
Oh dear....
16 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Just when things find their stride, along comes "Amy's Choice".

Cold suns, sleepy village's, & a stereotype miniature antagonist.....

Many years ago, during a "video night with the guys", I wrote 4 words on a slip of paper & ensconced it under the VCR (Yep, that old!) The film was "The Usual Suspects" & the 4 words were "cripple is the killer".

Fast forward many years: I said to 'er indoors "there's another reality here". That was at the opening titles....

So far, I have enjoyed the Post-Tennant Who, but this was easily the weakest episode of the new batch. with a wave of the magic wand, all Ms Pond's demons are cast aside & all is well in the TARDIS.

Steven Moffat: if you want to engage the viewer, this ain't the way. Nu-Who watchers are a bit more savvy than this, & even though "Vampires of Venice" was barely average, "Amy's Choice" was just less than mediocre. Here's hoping the next episode is a bit more, well, just, Ummmmm, more.

Big Top (2009– )
2/10
Big tat, more like!
30 December 2009
1st of all, an apology to any overseas viewers.

If you tuned in expecting the sardonic writing of The Office, the eloquence of Yes, Minister or the raw genius of Fawlty Towers: Sorry! This can only be blames on current "blue sky" thinkers at the BBC's programming department.

Amanda Holden, With minimal talent (ahh, the irony!) to start with, must have pulled in every favour/loan/threat in her portfolio to get this made. Poor comic timing, dire scripts, sets recycled from "Crossroads" & something approaching no appreciable acting talent on display.

Oh, & what the hell is Tony Robinson doing in this mess?! what a way to see the 00's out. We saw it in with the aforementioned "Office" in 2001, & this wipes the ass of the decade!!

Still, there IS a plus side to this. There cannot be anything worse than this in the 2010 schedule.

can there????

Star Trek: Spock's Brain (1968)
Season 3, Episode 1
4/10
My brain hurt's...........
13 November 2009
OK, so it's not the greatest of the original trek's, & for what it's worth i don't think that "City on the edge of forever" is either, but it's not as bad as some would have you believe! Synopsis: female organ-snatchers filch yer fave science officer's cranial organ. Crewmates, well Kirk & McCoy really, go on "great quest" to re-unite said missing mind with original owner.

Ummm, thats about it...

Bearing in mind this is a 3rd season episode, AKA Fred Freiberger's death-knell, it could have been worse. Yes there is some eye candy. Yes, there is something for De Kelly to do other than pronounce another death.

Deep meaning: No, not really.

Deus Ex machina: not so much..........

Cheerful resolution: for Spock, yes. For Fred, go watch The way to Eden...

Mindless fun(sorry, i'm so, so sorry): well, yeah.

It's camp, Technicolour & entertaining. Not every hole can be a goal. But at least it's not too insulting. That's to follow in later episodes!

NBC Special Treat: Into Infinity (1975)
Season 1, Episode 3
6/10
The mists of time roll back to reveal.........
7 September 2009
a most obscure Sci-Fi offering, that to my knowledge, has not been repeated since it's incipient showing.

synopsis: small crew with SFX far beyond what was required, venture into the cosmos, with "ear-worm" theme tune & pre-"Gordon's ALIVE?!?!?" Brian Blessed & experience "The Black Hole" shenanigans 5 years before V.I.N.CENT, Maximillian & cohorts.

I wish this thing was available to see again, probably some obscure copyright reason why it's not, but come on Gerry and/or Sylvia...it's 34 years old. some countries are younger....

Anyhoo, I still have fond memories of "Into Infinity", (hey, i'm a proud Brit!!), & am still looking forward to a rendezvous with the crew in the not too distant future.
