The Butler (I) (2013)
4/10
Title Is Misleading
16 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I was hoping to see a movie about the butler and his experiences in The White House. I'm sure he had a lot of interesting stories to tell and a lot of very interesting experiences in his many years in The White House. Yes, the movie was about a butler to some degree, but it was more about the civil rights movement and the evil white man. I would love to know more about the butler. I would love to have seen his experiences with the presidents the movie skipped over. I think in real life he must have been more interesting than he was portrayed. I also did not like the liberties the movie took with the real butler's life. He spoke of no horrible event on the cotton fields as a child. He had one son, not two. His son, who is still alive, was not a militant. His wife did not have a drinking problem, nor did she have an affair. Why add unnecessary drama? This movie will win awards because of its self righteousness, but not because it's that deserving.

Beautiful movie
21 December 2012
Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away is fantastic. You see segments of most of the Cirque du Soleil shows, which are all terrific. The cinematography is excellent, the music is beautiful, and the acrobatics are incredible. There's a weak story line that does not interfere with the beauty of the movie at all. If fact, there is hardly any dialogue. You just sit back and enjoy the amazing sights on the screen. If you've seen any of the Cirque du Soleil shows, you'll enjoy recognizing them again on screen. The ending aerial act will take your breath away. Additionally, before the movie starts, there's a brief documentary about the making of the film, which makes the movie even more enjoyable.

Good (not great) Family Movie
23 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This was more of a family movie than I expected. It's a wholesome story demonstrating good values and doing the right thing. There is no sex or violence, and very little "language." (Spoiler alert - basic plot to follow - no ending revealed) It's the story of a recently widowed father (Matt Damon) who needs to start live over in a new environment to help him recover from the loss of his wife. He has a fourteen-year-old son who is having psychological issues and an adorable seven-year-old daughter. The daughter, played by Maggie Elizabeth Jones, is the best thing about the movie. After searching unsuccessfully for a new urban home, he finds a country home that is perfect, except that it is also a zoo. The zoo is fully staffed (with who else but Scarlett Johansson as the zoo keeper), but is in disrepair. You can guess the rest of the story. It's a feel-good plot, enjoyable, nothing too complicated, and appropriate for the whole family. There's even a little pre-teen romance.

If you like romantic comedies, this one is OK
6 May 2011
Well, I see that this movie is not getting good reviews, nor is it getting positive comments on the board. It's certainly not going to win any awards, but if you like romantic comedies and if you go knowing that it isn't great cinema, I think you'll enjoy it. It's all pretty predictable, and you'll question the characters' actions at times, but it will all work out just fine and you'll leave feeling just fine. Everyone is pleasant to look at, and there's nice scenery at the Hamptons. I for one am pretty happy with any romantic comedy, and I enjoyed this movie. You might leave your hubby or boyfriend at home - he'll suffer terribly. But it's fun to see alone or with girlfriends.

Arthur (I) (2011)
3/10
A real disappointment
9 April 2011
I love the Dudley Moore version of this movie, and from the previews, I was doubtful, but I go to at least one movie a week, so I decided to see this one. It was about what I expected - no comparison to the original. I got the impression that Russell Brand had seen the original and was trying to play Dudley Moore, but not really succeeding. Having a nanny instead of a butler did not work. Jennifer Garner did OK as Susan, but Greta Gerwig in the Liza Minnelli role was just pathetic. There was no chemistry and nothing about the character that would make us believe Arthur would give up his fortune for her. One of my favorite scenes in the 1981 version was the engagement party and the stable scene, and that was completely left out of this movie. I feel that scene was pivotal to the plot. Most notably, no one in the theater laughed. I first noticed that I was not laughing, then noticed that no one was. Perhaps remaking the film wasn't the worst idea ever, but if it had to be done, more thought should have been put into the idea. You might enjoy the movie if you have not seen the original, but if you have, you will be disappointed.

Very enjoyable movie
4 September 2009
Well, I see that this movie isn't getting good reviews from everyone. But I love going to movies every Friday, and I figured with Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper, this movie couldn't be all that bad. I went to the first showing of the day and found a packed theater. If you enjoy a romantic comedy or just a comedy, you will enjoy this movie. No, it's not spectacular, and no, it won't win any Oscars, but it has plenty of laughs and fun moments. Sandra Bullock plays Mary, a crossword puzzle writer who claims to have her own apartment but actually still lives with her parents. She talks non-stop and is a walking encyclopedia. Her parents have fixed her up on a blind date, which she expects to be with a loser, but guess who shows up - Bradley Cooper, who plays Steve, a TV cameraman. She makes a poor impression on him before his car even leaves the front of her house, but she mis-interprets his feelings and begins following him around on his assignments. It's pretty much prat-fall comedy. Just light-hearted movie. I could tell that everyone else in the theater was enjoying it too, and we all left in a good mood. It's not really a "chick" movie - there is plenty for the men to enjoy too. So if you want some pretty simple but fun entertainment, this is a good movie to see. I'm glad I ignored the one review that was here before mine and went to see this movie anyway.

Just good summer fun
23 August 2008
If you want to see a cute, feel-good movie that doesn't require a lot of thought and will leave you with a smile on your face, this is the movie to see. You'll laugh out loud at much of the humor, and you'll fall in love with Anna Faris. It's just silly fun. Anna Farris plays a ditsy blond who gets kicked out of the Playboy Mansion (Hugh Hefner is a good sport in this movie!), ends up homeless, and ends up as a house mother for a sorority of "loser" girls (smart girls who don't know how to attract boys). The sorority is about to lose its charter because they can't get enough pledges, and of course Faris saves the day for the sorority by teaching the girls how to be popular, and, along the way, she learns a few lessons herself. You'll enjoy knowing that her love interest is played by Colin Hanks, son of Tom Hanks, and that some of the people in the Playboy mansion and at the party at the mansion are played by themselves. Also, Rumer Willis, daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore and Katherine McPhee from American Idol are girls in the sorority. I thoroughly enjoyed this light movie.

The Contender (2000)
You'll like it if.....
23 October 2000
This was a very good and a very believable movie. The bottom line is that if you lean toward liberalism, you will think this is a great movie with a great message. If you lean toward conservatism, you will feel violated, but you will still have to agree that the movie is entertaining, the acting is good, and the message is important. There's a big secret alluded to early in the movie - see if you can guess it!

Makes me mad
21 October 2000
It always makes me mad when movies manipulate me into crying. I always fight it and "refuse" to cry. I get all fixed up with my eye make-up, then some movie like this makes me make it all a mess! I was doing pretty well in this movie at not crying until the end. So just get your Kleenex ready about half way through the movie and have it handy. Helen Hunt was very good in this movie, and I thought she was believable as a blue-collar type. I didn't like the portrayal of the teacher as such a bad dresser with the goofy tennis shoes with a suit. I teach high school, and most of the men dress "cooler" than that! Kevin Spacy was good too. Haley Osment was exactly like he was in Sixth Sense - I kept expecting him to say "I see dead people." This movie was worth the price - it's very good, but I'm glad I didn't make my husband see it - only the "sensitive" type men will like it. Mine likes movies like The Ladies Man and Best in Show much better. Anyway - don't forget the Kleenex!

Best in Show (2000)
This movie is a hoot.
21 October 2000
My husband and I really enjoyed this movie. It's just quirky and weird and funny. Don't expect it to be a story - it's done in documentary style with dog owners talking about getting ready for dog shows. The characterizations are hilarious. The glamour girl and the old man - like Anna Nicole Smith and her old guy - that was so funny. And the husband/wife team - they kept running into her old lovers who all had to remark on her love-making skills right in front of her daffy husband! This movie won't appeal to everyone. When it ended, an elderly couple in front of us stood up, and the lady turned to the man and said, "That's the last time I'm letting you pick the show." She looked like she wanted to slug him. We thought it was very funny - or more amusing than "ha ha" funny. But you do have to like quirky humor. Really - it's a hoot!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
15 October 2000
I have always loved Robert Altman movies, and this one lived up to my great expectations. The acting was excellent - especially Richard Gere's. What a perfect specimen of a man he is - and what a fine actor. The look on his face when he was kneeling beside the his wife in bed as the reality of her illness really sank in is some of the finest acting I have ever seen. Others have called this movie "too busy," but that's what I liked about it - it moves right along with never a dull moment. As a Texan, I had to chuckle at the portrayals of Texas women - especially the over accessorizing - what a hoot seeing Laura Dern baking while wearing six huge zebra patterned bracelets. I'm not the biggest Dern fan, but I thought she was excellent in this movie. And Farrah Fawcett looked great - we should all look so good in our 50's. Even the actresses with smaller roles were excellent. Shawne Fielding, who played the actress who says, "We're all here to see Dr. T" and then sits down showing her exasperation, was great - I sense a great beauty/comic acting ability in her - shades of the beautiful comics of the 40's. I like Helen Hunt, but I didn't think she was suitable as a love interest for Richard Gere. Her character, however, was meaningful in that she was the only women in Gere's life who could take care of herself, which seemed to baffle him. The ending is one of those that leaves you really thinking - unexpected and provoking. Hubby and I are still discussing and analyzing its meaning. I liked this movie, and I recommend it to everyone - especially mothers who over dress their little girls and Texans who can laugh at themselves.
