The Girls of Huntington House (1973)
Beautiful
This is a really beautiful movie about a home and school for young unwed mothers and a teacher who becomes too involved with her students. Sissy Spacek is my favorite actress, and here she stars as a young pregnant, determined to follow her heart and run her own life. She soon is confronted with a new teacher, portrayed by Shirley Jones, and totally disagrees with the lifestyle of the mature woman, stating her as being emotionally crippled. It´s very moving to witness the fights and discussions of the two strong characters, who, no matter how different their points of view, slowly grow to become friends. Although at times it is too obvious this was "only" made for TV, it still is a touching and sweet little film.
The Cell (2000)
Not especially great
SPOILER ALERT I didn´t really like this movie, since I´m not into big special effect things and I don´t believe Jennifer Lopez is a notably talented actress at all. I have to say that it was stunningly made, but for me, this shouldn´t be what pushes a story ahead. Nevertheless, the events taking place outside the killers mind really frightened me, where his last victim, played by the great Tara Subkoff, is shown being trapped in a cell which is filling up with water. She was the only thing I loved about this movie. Without having any dialogue to say at all, she manages to really take you in with her strong performance, taking her character through various stages of fear without sticking to a stereotype.
When the Bough Breaks (1994)
Scary but beautiful
This movie really surprised me as I didn´t expect too much of it. The plot reminds me a little of the great french film LES YEUX SANS VISAGE, and it´s interesting to see the somewhat old school crime scene being transformed into a contemporary tale of murder and obsession. I found this to be very well done and extremely scary. Of the performances, the work of Tara Subkoff, in her first role, needs to be singled out. She is simply amazing and gives an unbelievably emotional portrayel of a mentally disturbed child.
