The Night Agent: Fathers (2023)
Excellent show! (With one gripe)
I loved this series the first time I watched it. When I recommended it to my wife, I loved it again as I watched it with her.
Despite my best efforts to be a feminist, I'm still a man, raised in a man's world, so I sometimes miss things that may stand out to a woman. So it was my wife who pointed out a fairly major oversight at the end of the final episode.
Peter was the hero and title character of the show, that's true. But he couldn't have done any of it without Rose's help, and Rose is the only one who didn't get any kind of special consideration at the end. Peter got an exciting new assignment. Chelsea got a new gig on the President's detail. Even Maddie, whose idiocy allowed the advancement of the bad guys' plot, is looking forward to studying art in Rome. While Rose sits on the hood of a car looking pretty, watching her man fly away into the sunset.
Don't get me wrong, I still loved the show and am eagerly looking forward to the next season, but I really hope they address this oversight and give Rose a little more consideration.
Soul of Silas (2015)
Unbelievable. Really.
I'm an author working on a historical novel leading up to the Sand Creek Massacre. While doing some online research for this project, I stumbled across this movie about Silas Soule, one of my main characters. Of course, I HAD to start watching it.
Oh my god. The acting reminded me of a school play. And I know that casting someone with the exact same features as the character they're playing isn't all-important, but in a time when hair and beard styles were particularly distinctive, why couldn't they be bothered with trying to make the actors at least resemble their characters?
Not to mention the fact that much of the information presented was flat out wrong.
Honestly, I've never seen such a bad "historical" production.
Out of Time (2000)
Really Bad
Most movies that I take the time to watch, I can find some redeeming qualities. With this one, I am hard pressed to find them. The acting is generally bad, the writing is abominable, and the attempts at humour were eye-rolling groaners. The dialogue for the kid sounds like that written by an adult who cannot get the hang of "hip" speech.
And they introduced things out of nowhere to get something done. For instance, they needed to get the information off of the developer's computer, so at just the crucial moment, they decided that the kid could become invisible. There was no explanation as to how or why he suddenly had this power. They just couldn't figure out a realistic way to do it. I understand that the story is a fantasy, so I don't have a problem with a character being able to become invisible, but there has to be some sort of explanation.
Overall, my suggestion is: "Don't waste your time."
Ed (2000)
Best show on TV!
When I saw the first episode of "Ed", I liked it a lot, but reserved judgment. I've seen so many programs that shine at their first showing only to dull very quickly, that I didn't get my hopes up about this one. Now, after seeing several episodes, I can honestly say that this is consistently the best show on TV. The writing is fresh and the delivery is first rate. I've found that I actually like and care about all of the quirky characters in this show. The comedy varies from subtle to "in your face" weird, depending on what character is featured, but it's never overdone. The courtroom scenes don't overpower the personal stories. And the romance is believable and sweet without getting too sticky.
I recommend this program to anybody who prefers well-developed characters and coherent storylines to most of the other comedy/drama/crime show clones out there.
