God's Army (2000)
An interesting look at an interesting culture
16 June 2003
Some of the reviewers seem to have expected a movie that preaches mormonism. That is not what this movie appears to be. It is simply a snapshot of people's lives, living in a very unusual way in modern times. The characters seem real, the situations mostly non-contrived, and the writing is good.

This is just as much a movie about Mormons as Witness was a movie about the Amish. You get a glimpse into their lives and a small taste of what they believe and do, but the story is the important part.

Dutcher has stated that his purpose was to make movies for the mormon market, and if other people enjoyed them then that was ok. While it can be a little rough around the edges, it is a fine piece of independent cinema, and a joy to watch.

I really enjoyed it and I am looking forward to Dutcher's next effort, The Prophet, the story of the mormon prophet Joseph Smith. He is an interesting character and lived an interesting life, whether you believe he was a prophet or not.

Art House (1998)
Great story and good acting, in a low budget indie!

I was impressed with this movie, and recommend it. I was looking for something different to watch, and picked it up at my local Hollywood video, not expecting too much, but was pleasantly surprised. The movie is a about a group of young aspiring movie makers trying to get their script made into an independent film, all the while becoming less idealistic in their outlook. I enjoyed the performances, especially Chris Hardwick as Weston Craig and Dan O'Donahue gave a nice understated performance as the lead. Funny and clever, it was a highly enjoyable experience.

Last Night (I) (1998)

What a wonderful movie
4 November 2000
This movie is everything that "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact" should have been. Forgoing the special effects, and not even dwelling on the actual disaster itself, this movie instead decides to concentrate on the human characters, and their individual "last hurrahs!" The last six hours of humanities existence, and you see everything you would expect to see, but also much that you wouldn't. A great film with a wonderful cast, Ho is amazingly good, and the rest follows well with only a few exceptions. See this movie, it is one of those that will have you thinking and talking about if for a long time. Incredibly moving.

Nightfall (2000 Video)

Bollywood Sci Fi
3 November 2000
I was hopeful for this adaptation of Isaac Asimov's short story, however I was highly disappointed. Obviously made in Bollywood (all the extra's are Indian)it suffers from many of Bollywood's problems; melodrama, poor acting, poor script etc. The movie basically presents the conflict between Science and Religion during cataclysm, identified by the title, of nightfall. The people of Eon are not adapted to darkness, as their planet has six suns, and only once every 1000 years do they experience night. However destruction inevitably follows.

The director and writer have obviously tried to use this as a moral play on the reactionary instincts of religion verses the rationality of science, but this comes through weakly. David Carradine is wasted here, and the only bright spot is Jennifer Burns, but not because of her acting, mostly just because she is extremely easy on the eyes.

If you are looking for a good Sci Fi movie along the same lines, see Pitch Black, even though it isn't great, it is a hell of a lot better than this movie.
