I actually was intrigued to see this, BUT
9 December 2004
Ooof! This one was a stinker. It does not fall 'somewhere in between Star Wars and Thriller', thats for sure. In all actuality, it falls somewhere between the cracks of a Wham! video and Captain EO, only with not as big of a budget, and a lot more close ups of ugly teenagers crying. Simon Le Bon preens front and center, while the rest of the band gamely tries to hide the fact that they stole their whole career from Roxy Music's last 3 albums. Brief clips from Barbarella add nothing. Avoid at all costs. (However, I liked the part when they played 'Hungry Like The Wolf' but why was there a tiger lurking in the audience changing into a woman painted with tiger stripes? I mean, they aren't singing 'Eye of the Tiger' or 'Hungry like the Tiger' it's a Wolf! Whatever.) A DVD of Duran Duran's '80s videos is probably worth a look for nostalgia's sake

Mis-cast, misbegotten, forlorn little affair
28 October 2003
I'm wondering if Nic and Anthony actually read this script before committing to the film. She was all wrong for the part, never convincing or powerful. If this had been made in the 1970's, Sissy Spacek may have played the part well. The sight of Nicole Kidman naked and riding a geriatric turtle resembling Anthony Hopkins has been burned onto my retina for the ages. The story is lugubrious, uninspired direction, and has an ending thats vaguely predictable about 1/3 of the way in. Oddly enough, the story told in the flashbacks was far more interesting than the 'present day' story, though it did remind me of Steve Martin's "The Jerk". However, I needed to suspend my disbelief with a whole lotta bungee cord in order to be able to buy the actor playing the young Hopkins as a light skinned African American. Oh Puhleeze. All in all, I found it to be a waste of time, the memory of viewing it is painful, and I wish Mystery Science Theatre were still around cause this mess would be my vote for next seasons opener.

Owe Tiger!

military hotties amuck under the watchful eyes of Joel Schumacher (batman forever and robin, flatliners, 8mm, falling down), who tries to direct a gritty tale of basic training, but ends up with something out of the steamier side of the abercrombie catalog. Highly Recommend for prurient interest only.

What an amazing, thoughtful film

I found this to be a wonderful, uplifting story with many memorable lines and characters. Billy Crudup is definitely one of the most underrated actors of his generation. The writing and direction are superb. I was surprised by this film, its a real gem.

I thought it was good

Maybe its because I remember seeing this movie on TV so often when I was younger that I still think its hilarious. Its not the best comedy, but some scenes are really funny in a cheesy, early '80s sort of way. Lily Tomlins smile could brighten up any film, and this was directed by Joel Schumacher. I never could figure out why the cinematography in some scenes is so soft, and he actually employs some of the same visuals he would use in later movies. I like how her entire neighborhood seems to be living in a commercial ("Pat, its BoatSheen!") and I think her narration is particularly funny. Give it a chance, don't expect much, and enjoy it for the character actors in bit parts.

A better movie than I expected
2 April 2001
I think this is a pretty good movie and it seems as though quite a bit was edited out to make it more palatable to children. When will studios learn that this is not the way to make movies. This film had awesome visuals and a lot of creativity went into making it. I hope that the dvd will show us the directors cut, and I think then this movie will become a cult classic.
