What Remains (2013)

Outstanding
15 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This is a, outstanding drama in which suspense is created by uncertainty about the true nature of the characters in a house. The unexplained death of a very overweight, shy, lonely female tenant in the house is the start of an endeavour to get to the truth by a detective who is retiring on the day her body is found. His dogged continuation of the investigation after his retirement seems partly based on his own shock at the loneliness and insignificance of his own life outside the workplace.

The sense of alienation between neighbours and the themes of isolation, loneliness and secrecy simmer. The acting is uniformly outstanding and the house menacing. The ending is surprising, but believable and David Threlfall's performance is compelling throughout.

Superbly written and acted 4 part BBC series
6 April 2012
This four-part series, commissioned by the BBC, tells the interlocking stories of a killing set on a housing estate in London. Each episode shows the plot through the eyes of a different character, including the 13-year old Alfie, played by Billy Matthews, making his TV debut in this series. The linked characters and stories enable us to see identical scenes from completely different perspectives. The writer Paul Smith wanted to show the false views of reality we often have due to our own prejudices and pre-judgements.

The stark almost amoral life led by young people who live in these urban estates is accurately portrayed, yet despite the tragic stories of some of the key characters, this is not grim to watch but gripping.

The haunting music By Errollyn Wallen, coupled with the stunning acting, brilliant screenplay, clever editing and brilliant direction mean this is a series to watch and keep.
