Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023)
Show feels formulaic and unoriginal
I love Godzilla. I had expected this show to have Kaiju all over the place, but sadly they are not. I've only seen the first 2 episodes and Kaiju have made up about 3 minutes in total.
The female characters are what you might expect. We have the black girl in Japan who's a tech genius and can hack military grade equipment on her home computer, the female doctor who graduated from Berkeley, and the other female who is suffering from PTSD who's able to continuously out smart Monarch's secret agents. The women are pretty bossy and put the dudes in their place often, which is understandable because the men are all childish.
Then the male characters. They are all bumbling idiots, weak, and make poor decisions. If the men just listened to the females half the problems in the show would be adverted. You could remove all the male characters and nothing would be lost. At one point one of the female characters went to the police to report her being kidnapped, and the male cop brushed her off basically saying she must be drunk and brought it on herself.
The story is slow, no way around it. So far I'm hanging in their because I love Godzilla stuff and Kurt Russell, but I'm slowly coming to accept this is more of a drama/light adventure than action/adventure show.
Overall, I say check it out. Just don't expect an exciting show. Just something to chill be to. Maybe things will pick up in later episodes.
The Covenant (2023)
WoW!
I love war movies. Some of my favorite war movies are: Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, and Thin Red Line to name a few. I have pretty much lost hope in Hollywood putting out anything of quality, but damn was this movie a nice surprise. I went into this movie blind expecting something to watch while I play games on my other screen. I ended up closing my game, putting the dog away, and focusing on this movie.
This is one of the better if not best war movies I've seen in at least 10 years. The storyline, acting, action, pace, musical score, and ending are flawless. Hell, I even got emotional a few times and that never happens. If you like war/military movies this is a MUST see!
From Scratch (2022)
Hard to review the movie
I watched this series with my gf... I was bored to tears. I was ready for the Grim Reaper to take me to the afterlife.
With that said, my gf loved the movie. She loves traveling, foody, and kissy kissy type of movies. She cried throughout the series and got mad at me when I tried to claw myself away. When I was not trying to jump out the 3rd story window to scream, "FREEDDOM!" I did laugh a few times. Like when an Italian dude went in to kiss an American dude to greet him and the American was like, "WTH are you doing!" I got a good laugh, which upset my gf. The father, Keith David, is a good actor and I won't trash a movie with him in it, he has earned my respect as an actor.
Overall, I recommend the movie - if this is your thing. The scenery, acting, storyline, music, and dialog is cool.
The Lair (2022)
Not a bad movie
If you liked the movie series Feast than you will like this movie. The movie won't win any award but it was a fun movie. I almost turned the movie off after the first 7-10min when we got to watch G. I. Jane nearly solo an entire army. I thought here we go again with the strong female trope, but she turned out to be a cool character.
The acting was serviceable and the music was okay. The gun fights and explosions did not pull me out of the show. Some of the jokes landed pretty good. For a low budget monster movie I give this film 2 thumbs off. I'd rather watch this film than Amazon's Rings of Power, but I guess that is not saying much.
Andor (2022)
Who would have guessed Disney did something right
I held off watching this show till 7 episodes because I hate everything Disney does these days. After hearing positive stuff about this show from the AngryJoeShow and Jeremy Jahns (random YouTubers) I decided to give the show a chance. All I can say is wow...
In terms of quality this show is easily one of the best we've got in a decade. A little of a slow burn but between the character develop and acting the show is worth the wait. I really liked The Mandalorian and I'd put this show next to that one, but better quality and less action.
If you are sick of what Disney has been putting out lately and want something new than this is for you. If you love what Disney has been doing last 6-8 years than, as the famous Capitan Marvel said, "This show is not for you."
Joel Kim Booster: Psychosexual (2022)
Where were the jokes?
I'm sure others will enjoy his sense of humor, especially if you LOVE hypersexualized and gay jokes. But it was a miss for me. After watching the show for nearly 2 hours nothing he said seemed remotely funny or even cause me to break a smile.
Jiok (2021)
Worth a watch
The 1st 3min of episode 1 had me sold on the show. I was like DAMN the show looks crazy! I tried to get my gf to watch the show but she couldn't because it was too bloody. Every time the demons showed up you knew things were about to get ugly.
The actors did a good job. The story was okay. The slow parts are expected to build up characters, I can't expect the whole show to be a rollercoaster and have good characters.
The ONLY part I didn't like... This is just a PERSONAL thing that gets my eyes rolling. The strong woman trope. This woman up to this point in the show as cool normal chick, but all of a sudden she turns into RAMBO. She beats up 20+ dudes with weapons at the same time with her bare hands, kneeing dudes in the head, 1 punching knocking dudes outs, flipping 200 pound dudes over her head. She falls off the 4th floor onto the ground below and gets up and just runs off like its nothing. She will have to walk down a hallway and 6 guys are in her way... no problem. She beats them all up and continues on her way to beat up more people and escape with dozens of more dudes behind her. This woman went from at the start of the show getting beat half to death by 5 guys while begging for her life on her knees, to RAMBO and James Bond put together. I'm cool with women kicking butt, but damn.
Deathstroke Knights & Dragons: The Movie (2020)
Enjoyed the movie a lot
My expectations were low after seeing all the negative reviews. But after watching the movie I enjoyed myself a lot. The story, music, voice acting, and animation were cool. It's not a story I will remember in years down the road, but it was a DAMN good time waster. I didn't give a poop about Deathstroke as a character before this movie, but I will keep an eye out for content with him in it going forward.
Deathstoke does seem like a bootleg Wolverine... :P. They are so similar I'm sure there's been much debate which one would win in a fight.
This movie was better than most stuff Hollywood is putting out these days, especially Marvel. Marvel... give me these animations any day over another Disney Marvel movie.
SAS: Red Notice (2021)
The movie is a solid 3-5 stars
It's what you'd expect from a Ruby Rose movie. People on this site giving the movie a 0 or a 10 are just hating or bumping the rating to support Ruby Rose.
Without Remorse (2021)
Movie is meh
Watch it if you're bored. Movie has poor acting, poor storyline, and poor action.
Monster Hunter (2020)
Hard to watch
Story: None
Character development: None
Memorable songs: None
Acting: Poor
Where'd all the money go: CGI
CGI quality: Sci-fi
I had heard this movie was trash, but I watched it anyways to support Ron Perlman (Hell Boy) and Milla Jovovich (Alice)
Project Power (2020)
Good popcorn flick
Story line: 6/10
I went into this movie blind. I just opened up Netflix to watch anime and this movie was recommended to me so I gave it a chance. The story line is weak. Nothing makes sense. This is the kind of movie you turn your brain off and watch nonsensical stuff happen on screen and eat popcorn. I made it though the movie without getting bored. But once the movie ended all I could think was wtf was that movie and wtf was the ending.
Acting: 7.5/10
I love Jamie Foxx so I give him 2 thumbs up and Joseph Gordon-Levitt did a goodish job. Their lines were okay and I believed in the pain they felt.
Music: 6/10
Mostly random Hip-hop clips. I like hip-hop but hearing a random song for 10-20 seconds is not memorable. During some of the fight scenes the music left the hip-hop genre and played some Orchestra type music and I was like finally...
Chance I will remember movie in 5 months: 4.5/10
Overall the character's lines were forgettable, the story line... made no sense. This is the kind of movie where it tells you what will happen, but not why or how.
What bugged me (non-spoiler):
I'll give you a non-spoiler portrayal of a character in this movie. Imagine you're a military super soldier (one of the best soldiers on the planet), while you're in the military defending your country overseas you also have the time to create the most significant and complicated scientific discovery in the history of humanity that will evolve humans as we know it to literal Gods. But how you crated this medical marvel, where you found the time, where you got the knowledge, did you even go to college, etc... is kept a secret.
Shot Caller (2017)
WoW!
I went in expecting garbage, just another prison movie which seem to be a dime a dozen. To say the movie surpassed my expectations would be an understatement. I would definitely recommend this movie.
The actors did a good job overall. The movie actually touched me. You felt these people's pain and understood why they made the hard choices they did. This movie is not for the faint at heart. I tried to get my girl friend to watch the movie with me, but she couldn't last more than 20 minutes.
