My Daemon (2023)

Realistic Pokémon/Digimon Made Perfect!
26 May 2024
I am almost done with the series on Netflix. To sum it up, it is about a boy named Kento and a daemon named Anna (she reminds me of Sparky from Frankenweenie) on their journey to do something very important (not saving the world, fortunately). Along the way, messy things keep happening to them. This is a more realistic approach to Pokémon/Digimon. The world of humans and daemons is beautifully told through the journey of Kento and Anna. The show really depicts the ugly side of humanity if creatures like daemons existed. The animation style is captivating. The storyline is heartbreaking but heartwarming at the same time. Definitely worth watching!

One Piece (2023– )

A fantastic adaptation
2 September 2023
This adaptation is just superb!

Goods:
  • The cast is probably the highlight (thanks to Oda sensei and the talent search crew for that). Nami is the BEST!

  • The core story is there. There are obviously some changes but they do not divert the story too much.

  • Beautiful cinematography

  • It kept the essence of heart-warming of the manga+anime.

Bads:
  • Some beloved side characters were not there

  • It felt a little rushed but overall, it is the best shonen adaptation by a million miles.

Final consensus: Can't wait to see Robin, Chopper, and the rest of the crew members. I NEED SEASON TWO LIKE RIGHT NOW!!!

The Medium (2021)

Quite scary with good storyline but bad execution
3 November 2021
It is quite spooky. It starts out very strong then goes rotten toward the end. After some reading, though, I found that this film actually has an enticing storyline (which, to some degree, is open for interpretations). However, production choices are not well executed. For instance, this film is presented as a documentary (mockumentary to be specific) but why is it necessary to add those background experimental music for jump-scare value? NOT AT ALL. Overall, it is a waste of potential but I would still recommend it.

Subtle, Beautiful and Exceptional Cinematographic
5 May 2021
The acting is just unbelievable, and you can see that this is more-or-less a director-driven film. The filming is just beautiful. There are hidden messages to life in this movie. I believe all the accolades it received spoke it all.

It's like an extended episode of Black Mirror with its own spin and more humor
14 June 2020
The concept of the future where the human conscience can be saved and uploaded into augmented reality is not new. However, this show managed to focus more on the human side and not so much of the tech. It is enjoyable and surprisingly good. I cannot wait for season 2!

Hunter x Hunter (2011–2014)

Still the best anime of all time!
2 May 2020
The story is very rich and thoughtful. It starts with a happy-go-lucky boy called Gon going on a journey and wanting to be a hunter. The first few episodes are show-casing the typical shounen anime story line. Then it gets darker. Each arch would progress to another so seamlessly.

The characters are very complex and never blunt or monotonous like many shonen characters in other famous anime. The relationship between the 2 male protagonists is very interesting; more than friends, but not to the point of romantic love.

In fights, the stronger (in power) do not guarantee the win. It is neither about the one-moment miracle power-up. It does take tactic, trickery and desperate attempts most of the time.

If the Asian BL series got its own Primetime Emmy, this takes the award
2 May 2020
This is not another college cliché BL show. Actually, it might not fall into the BL category for it is too real. HIV-positive, lady boy and feminism/ masculinity in gay culture - all these are the problems that are being tackled in this film.

The Good Place: Whenever You're Ready (2020)

That is how you end the show!
17 April 2020
This ending will definitely make you re-think the meaning of your life and what is it to be a (good or bad) human. There might be some lows and highs throughout the 4 seasons. Overall I enjoyed the show so much, and this finale should be a prime example of how a series should come to a close.

DragRace fans are going to LOVE IT!
13 January 2020
The best thing about this show is it can be serious and at the same time campy. It is just like Drag Race. The production is excellent and of course, leave it to these people to give us the best and enjoyable soundtracks of all time.

Although we can see that some guest drag queens can really act in this series, RuPaul herself is just Rupaul, and Iggy can be annoying at the time. Michael-Leon Wooley is the real acting star here.

All in all, it is fun, campy and heart-warming. Take some message home but don't take the whole series so seriously. That's all I can say. Oh, and I hope it will have Season 2.

Please do fire the writing team or this show won't last.

I've seen illogical things throughout this season but the build-up was great. However, the finale is the biggest disappointment. I hope they will do much better in season 3.

Joker (I) (2019)
10/10
Whatever the critics might say, Joker will go down in the history of film!
22 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This makes the End Game a joke (yep and it is called Joker). For me, it even surpasses The Dark Knight. In this move, Joker is more than just a villain, he is an icon, a symbol and a legend!

The script is already good enough but Joaquin Phoenix took it to another level. To see him dance around and kill people, somehow, is an art in this title. Seriously, some parts of the movies are scarier than many horror films.

Well, I just cannot praise it enough. Let say the TOP 3 best film of any genres in 2019 period!

Black Mirror (2011– )

One of the best things ever shown on Netflix!
20 October 2019
It took until season 5 primer for me to start driving myself into this proclaimed series. I got to say it did not disappoint, NOT at all. Everything is just perfect; the actors selection, the acting, the scripts, the visual, the soundtracks and best of all, the story lines. So many twists, sometime predictable but still surprising to an extent. Every single episode is thought-provoking.

Some people will like some episodes more than the others, depending on how much they relate to it. If you have been thinking so much about the subject of death, you will love "San Junipero" (literally the only episode with an actual happy ending). If your interest lies within the realm of detective/ crime genre, you will adore "Playtest" and "Hated in the Nation". "Fifteen Million Merits" is all about the entertainment industry and "Nosedive" will get you choked-up a little if you are an Instagram-freak.

For me, this is one of the best things ever came out in the decade.

Quite enjoyable but pretty much overrated
20 October 2019
I did enjoy the first half of the show. It was subtle and emotional. This was the first time ever in the franchise that they show us the capability of the actors they hired (except for Chris Hemsworth and Tom Holland of course as they have been pretty much one-note. Well, it might be because of the script. They can still prove their ability in many other movies in the future).

Then the action part came in. The central theme of the Avengers franchise. The time traveling was intriguing and everything, but seriously the end was a mess. That scene with force-feminism was "cringy" to its best. The death of the character(s) also felt forced and unnecessary.
