Val (2021)
The Twilight Zone: Beetlejuice Edition!
I saw someone else compare this film to the Twilight Zone and it really stuck with me. That's a perfect comparison to the beginning of the film where this criminal breaks into the home of a sinister Lucille Ball type escort and everything feels---like a carnival funhouse.
Spoilers ahead! We're slowly led further into this funhouse (Val's house) until we've run out of breadcrumbs and the only way back is this recurring holy roman knife and a climactic faustian decision which is all told through the POV of our protagonist, Fin.
I really loved Val and found both the actress and actor playing the lead roles to have knocked it out of the park. The director, Aaron Fradkin, is someone I've really enjoyed watching grow as a storyteller. Admittedly I probably would have given Val an 8.5 but I rounded up because I've been following this filmmaker duo's work from their short horror films on YouTube and I see how much work they put into each one of their projects.
There's something very refreshing about Val after a sea of traditional horror films, Val feels like a demonic breath of fresh air.

How can we multiply these filmmakers?
I watched this and thought, ohmigoshhh can this writer/director just keep going and going forever??? We need so much more in film and TV like this. Brilliant storytelling, cinematography, editing, everything. Bravo!!!!!!!
Electric Love (2018)
Enjoyed and would like to explore characters further
I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet independent film. The filmmakers should be proud! I heard about it from the MDIFF Facebook posts but I was unable to make the screening in time so rented on Amazon.
I'll add that the show's characters are what give it such strong appeal. I could see this being a successful TV show that I would certainly binge. Spending a little more time with each character would have made the film stronger, I kept wanting a little more. That's my only critique. But still giving this a 9 because as an aspiring filmmaker, I see a lot of hard work and care poured into the production. From the strategic neon lighting choices, the fast pacing, the nostalgic 80s soundtrack...there's a lot to love here.
Full disclosure, if I wasn't immersed in filmmaking myself, I'd probably land this around a 7/8 star but I have to give credit to how hard the skeleton crew worked. Well done!
Captain Marvel (2019)
The negative reviews ALMOST stopped me from seeing this...
But I had a feeling there was something amiss here in the world of IMDB reviews. I personally loved it. Exploring Larson's character, powers, and origin story were a great thrill ride.
Whatever you decide, just make sure to go to the theatre on your own and make your own decision on the film. As with most Marvel films, you'll definitely get your money's worth.
Sherlock (2010)
What more can I say except...
Give us MORE SHERLOCK!!! Alas, you fools, what could be more important than giving us more, more, MORE! ;)
