Not worth your time
27 April 2011
My husband and I watch a lot of movies.

We both like Reese Witherspoon so we expected to like "How Do You Know."

Unfortunately, the plot wasn't interesting; the acting mediocre, Ms. Witherspoon did not look like her normal svelte self, and we were just plain bored. There was no chemistry between the actors and we thought Owen Wilson's character was cheesy altogether.

My husband asked me about 1/2 way through if I even wanted to finish the movie; it was that disappointing.

We did finish it, hoping it would get better or at least have a redeeming message at the end, but it did neither.

We can't recommend this movie - to anyone!

Kids were bored
12 April 2011
We hoped good things for this movie, having really enjoyed "Despicable Me."

Yes, the animation is lovely, especially the candy-making machines.

Unfortunately, the plot was filled with tons of dialog and it wasn't all that interesting.

I can easily become bored at kids' movies, but I've never seen my kids (almost 10, and 2 that are almost 6) fidget so much.

At one point about 3/4 of the way through my son asked, "Mom, can we go home now?"

Considering he's been to at least 8 movies to date and has never once asked this before, I knew HOP wasn't rating high with him.

The two girls said it was, "Okay" but that's not saying much.

I wish I could have given HOP a more favorable review, but a "5" is a fair assessment of it in my opinion.

Soul Surfer (2011)

Terrific Movie
10 April 2011
I wanted to see Soul Surfer for many reasons, primarily because I recently learned about Bethany Hamilton and wanted to see her courageous story. I also heard it advertised on our local radio station and thought it sounded like a good movie.

The movie clearly portrays the Hamilton family as a close group who walked through an extremely difficult tragedy with grace and courage.

The scene when Bethany is attacked by the whale is brief but the aftermath is bloody and somewhat difficult to watch so I would encourage parents to be mindful of this. I took my almost-10-year old daughter to see it with me, but I discussed ahead of time what the movie was about. I didn't know what to expect with the actual shark but I did remind her that shark attacks are very rare, that this young woman spent much of her time in the ocean, etc. I think my daughter was still a little haunted by the images, so please be mindful that younger kids could be traumatized.

Still, the movie is worth seeing, especially by teens and adults. This courageous young woman took a personal tragedy and made it something meaningful and positive. Bless her! The acting is solid, the action is quick, the script is realistic and keeps moving well. I liked everything about it and hope the movie does really well. We need more inspiring, uplifting messages today.

Enjoy!

Enjoyable movie!
23 January 2010
My mom, two sisters and I went to see this movie.

Like many others, Meryl Streep is one of my favorite actors, and I knew it would be a good film.

The four of us laughed (along with the whole audience) many times. I love the Office and think John Krasinski's scenes were hilarious. He did a great job with his role! Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep do a great job in their roles and I found Steve Martin's character to be great too.

The movie isn't just filled with laughs though - there are some truly poignant moments as well. Moments where you feel the pain the family has experienced and know that things might have turned out differently had they worked through earlier problems.

I can't say the movie was perfect - there were things I wish hadn't been as prominent (drugs) and the way things end was a little confusing, but I genuinely enjoyed the acting, the character development, the realistic emotions within the family and more.

Even the score was enjoyable.

And, almost a week later, I still find myself laughing about a couple of the scenes.

Not the greatest romantic comedy ever, but certainly worth seeing.

A little dark for little ones but overall a good Disney movie
2 January 2010
My husband and I took our 3 daughters (13, 8,7) to see The Princess & the Frog.

We liked it overall, but I felt there were a couple of scary parts that the movie could have done well without.

Overall the plot was interesting and the time moved quickly.

The resolution was typical Disney style and didn't disappoint any of us.

Our daughters will definitely want to see this movie again when it comes out on video. I'm sure I'll watch it again too.

Overall a solid Disney movie with maybe a bit too much dark-side for little ones.

Funnier than a lot of kids' movies
2 January 2010
I don't understand the severely low rating for this film. 2.7?

I was prepared for something awful but wanted to do something with the 4 younger kids before they headed back to school.

This is the movie they wanted to see.

I've seen a lot of kids' movies and this is definitely among the funnier ones I've seen.

My 8-year-old and I sat next to each other and had a hard time controlling our laughter on a few occasions.

I told my husband he definitely has to see this when it comes out on video. I can't wait to watch it with him!

Give it a try - maybe even risk raising your expectations a little!

A really decent movie
2 January 2010
My husband, brother-in-law and I saw this movie today.

We all agreed that Clooney was great in this role. The supporting cast was also very solid.

The plot was at times very sad and other times very funny.

Other reviewers who said they didn't feel anything about any of the characters must not feel very deeply.

Overall, the three of us were glad we saw this movie even if it didn't have the ending any of us anticipated.

Be sure to see this; if not in the theatre, then as a rental.

To me, it was worth the viewing time and I'm still thinking about some of the characters and outcomes in the movie hours later.

Wonderful Movie
27 November 2009
I can't think of anything wrong with The Blind Side that warrants comment.

This movie made my 18 year old daughter and I laugh many times. It was also poignant to see the life Michael Oher came from - and how both he and his new family were transformed in their relationships.

I heartily recommend this movie to those with an open heart, a desire to laugh, and to really see how things can absolutely change when we give of ourselves to others.

A feel-good movie based on a true story- something we all need these days! Blessings to Michael and the Tuohy family!

Funny, sad, all around good movie!
15 February 2009
I like many of the actors in this movie and the premise sounded interesting so I went to see this one myself.

I really enjoyed this movie! Some people who have seen it have said they thought it was too long or even boring, but I thought it was just right and I was never bored for even a minute.

Everyone's acting was strong and the topics of conversation were interesting and relevant to what married and single people are dealing with in their lives.

I'm not a Scarlett Johansen fan and I was surprised at scenes where her character is being groped madly. That story line was my least favorite.

The other story lines are solid and all together it makes for a movie that is well written, acted and presented.

I plan on seeing this one again when it comes out on DVD> I hope you enjoy this movie!

Great action movie
12 February 2009
My husband and I saw this movie tonight - very enjoyable!

Fast-paced, action-packed, somewhat violent, but you cheer Liam Neeson on as he takes on all the bad guys.

Liam Neeson is perfect in his role. The daughter is also great. The ex-wife very unlovable!

This movie takes you into the seedy side of an international problem that is unspeakably sad.

Like the Bourne movies, Neeson dodges every bullet but it's an exciting movie and 90+ minutes goes by unbelievably fast.

We really liked this movie and were glad we saw it!

Marley & Me (2008)
9/10
Terrific Movie!
3 January 2009
I read Marley & Me several years ago and was happy to see a movie was coming out. The initial critic's reviews I read made it sound like a weak movie. They were wrong.

Marley & Me does a great job of telling the story of the Grogan family. Yes, the main character is Marley, but Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson are great in their roles. Marley's antics are hilarious and we get to see the family evolve throughout the movie. I think the writers and directors did a great job in telling this story.

All in all, an enjoyable movie with plenty of laughs and plenty of tears. My daughter and I both enjoyed it a lot. I plan on seeing Marley & Me again in the theater with my husband and I'm sure we'll watch it again on video.

Enjoy this movie!

Atonement (2007)

Boring & crass
29 December 2007
I haven't read this book but I went to the movie hoping it would live up to its IMDb rating and critics' reviews. It didn't! I found it very long and slow in parts and it took some time to get over the use of vulgarity in the early "letter" scene - I was there with two younger (18, 24) nieces and didn't find this to be a pleasant scene. In fact, I was mortified. Some people left the audience after this and the library scene.

While the cinematography was beautiful in parts, there remain aspects of the movie I have yet to understand: The French soldier speaking to Briony in the hospital, the beach scene with the soldiers, and others. I just don't understand how they contributed to the movie except to add to its length. It was gory in the hospital scenes, too.

Overall, I wish I hadn't wasted my time seeing this movie. It left me with bad feelings, overall.

Evan Almighty (2007)

Hilarious with Meaning
12 October 2007
I watched Evan Almighty with my husband and 3 of our kids last night. I thought it was laugh-out-loud funny and also meaningful as a Christian believer.

My husband and I thought the animals on screen were amazing (kudos to the computer graphics folks) and although we thought the ark moving through the water scenes were a bit cheesy, we all really enjoyed the film.

If you liked Bruce Almighty, you'll probably like Evan Almighty too!

I'll be watching this one again soon! Some of the scenes with Evan and the animals and his dealing with his appearance were hilarious!

A big disappointment
9 June 2007
Based on the ratings, I thought I'd find this movie hilarious. My husband and I went hoping for the best and were sorely disappointed.

The movie had maybe 5 funny parts. I guess if you enjoy watching people 1)smoke pot (with all kinds of instruments), 2)watch movies with nudity, 3)simulate sex fully clothed and 4)fake laughter you will love this movie.

My husband & I both thought it dragged, was mostly stupid and implausible. For example, a character supposedly has -0- recollection of the night before but then recounts something specific that happened later in the movie. The main woman character has this successful career but ends up helping her clueless boyfriend keep track of the nudity in movies. Silly, stupid.

The acting was decent except for the main guy character - I hate his laugh and it's constant throughout the movie.

The only redeeming scene for me was the birth which was moving. Other than that, this was a waste of 2 hours.

Blood Diamond (2006)
9/10
Gripping, Provocative Movie
4 January 2007
My husband picked the movie tonight and I wasn't terribly enthusiastic about Blood Diamond from seeing the trailer. I was wrong.

The movie went by very quickly because it was well written, beautifully acted, and suspenseful.

I'm not a die-hard Leo D. fan, but I thought his performance was incredible. In fact, the entire cast was excellent.

It was hard to watch some of the scenes, especially involving young people, but it did expose some things I was unaware of in the diamond industry & in Africa in general.

I was moved, outraged and enlightened. Will I buy a diamond again knowing what I know now? I highly doubt it.

See this movie!

Dreamgirls (2006)

Solid movie experience
29 December 2006
I had seen Dreamgirls on Broadway many years ago so I looked forward to seeing the movie when it came out.

I wasn't disappointed in the least. The movie allowed character development to occur with greater depth and the performances were really superb.

Yes, Jennifer Hudson as Effie and Eddie Murphy as Jimmy are the scene- stealers. But all of the performances are very strong - not a weak character among them.

One thing that has annoyed me when reading critics' or moviegoer reviews. Beyonce' is described as being unimpressive or having a "flat" performance. This is exactly as it should be. She's showing great acting ability by not coming across as the star she truly is. Rather, she is playing to character - a doormat for her manager's vision who gradually comes into her own. I thought she was pretty terrific.

Overall, a really good movie that I look forward to seeing again when it comes out on DVD.

The music is fantastic!

Thoroughly Enjoyable Romantic Comedy
15 December 2006
I had read some negative reviews on IMDb so I went to see this movie half expecting to be bored and disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised to experience a movie that was funny, poignant & had interesting characters and plot lines.

My husband felt the movie was dragging a little at the beginning but I didn't think so. I do think it qualifies as more of a "chick flick" but I found it to be terrific.

I would be happy to see it again in the theater and will definitely own it when it comes out on DVD.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

The Break-Up (2006)

Decent romantic comedy/drama
3 June 2006
My husband and I went to see this film on its opening night and weren't surprised to see a full theatre.

The movie has its hilarious moments which are interspersed with plenty of uncomfortable, tense arguments as these 2 people who love one another try to one-up each other in the payback mode for the pain in their relationship.

My husband thought it dragged from the middle on a little, although I didn't.

We both left thinking the movie was really funny in some parts, pretty sad and even tragic in others. Overall, we thought the acting was solid & believable and though the ending wasn't expected, it was real and even hopeful.

We both said it was worth seeing, and if you're looking for a fairly real-life view of the life of a struggling relationship, you'll be glad you saw this film.

I left the theatre feeling a little empty, but glad that in real life, these two are together!! Enjoy!

Outstanding acting but not an epic movie
16 January 2006
Any movie that keeps a consistent 8.0 or above score on IMDb must be outstanding, right? I hesitated to see Brokeback Mountain because I'm not into same-sex relationships, but I'd heard the acting was superb and the cinematography beautiful. I wasn't disappointed with either of those 2 aspects of the movie. All of the actors did a fantastic job portraying their characters. And, to my surprise, it was the heterosexual sex scenes that left me wondering why they included what they did (bare breasts on both female actresses-totally unnecessary in this movie) The homosexual scenes were treated with delicacy and discretion in my opinion.

The movie made you think and yes, it did make me tear up in 2 spots. Love is love, I guess.

I wish things had ended differently and the characters hadn't lived such tortured lives. But that's up to the writer! This movie wasn't a "life-changer" or one I "won't be able to get out of my mind" as some reviewers felt. It had poignant moments but it wasn't quite "epic". I do hope Heath Ledger wins some awards. Jake Gyllenhal deserves recognition too. Brave men to take on these roles.

Great, Romantic movie!
10 December 2005
I thoroughly enjoyed this adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. I went to the movie not having read the book for over 20 years, but hoping I would enjoy the plot line and characters nonetheless. I was not the least bit disappointed.

The filming was beautifully done, from the first few scenes when Lizzy is walking back to her home. The scenery is lovely and the disparity between the rich and poor is conveyed clearly by the stature of their homes & yards.

The music is lovely, the acting is superb, the interactions & conflicts between Darcy and Lizzie memorable.

All in all, it's a wonderful story and a joy to sit through. Like many others, I wish the movie had been longer if only to prolong the feeling you're left with as the movie culminates.

If you like period romances like "Emma" "Sense & Sensibility" "Shakespeare in Love" "Ever After" & "Little Women", you're sure to enjoy "Pride and Prejudice".

And, by the way, the pig scene is so innocuous I have no idea why so much has been made of it... Ridiculous!

First rate acting in a first rate film
26 November 2005
I knew very little about Johnny Cash before seeing this movie but I'm really glad I invested the time to see it.

Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon do a great job portraying these complicated, talented artists and their relationship from the early days of their careers. Joaquin had a tougher role but he came through beautifully in expressing the angst and struggle in JC's life.

The actors did a very credible job singing and the drama around their relationship was interesting and poignant.

JC was a brilliant songwriter and singer who took some wrong paths on his road to fame and somehow lived to tell about it. The glimpses of his past give us an indication of where his dark side came from and yet he never gives up.

I really enjoyed this movie and I think you will too!

Decent suspense movie
24 August 2005
I took my teenage daughter and 2 friends to see this movie at our local drive-in this past weekend.

I wasn't expecting a nail biter, but I hoped the movie would be interesting enough that I'd be glad I went. It was!

It's not the best, edge of your seat thriller, nor is the ending as slick as, say, The Sixth Sense, but it was a decent, worthy of 90 minutes of my time, drama.

Plus, with the company I was in, I was glad to see things end as they did.

Good acting, some far-fetched plot lines, but nonetheless worth seeing overall.

Enjoy!

Pretty lousy movie
31 July 2005
I've always been able to trust other viewers' opinions on this site and have used the scores to decide whether to see a movie in the theatre or wait until it came out on DVD. Until now.

My husband and I went to see Wedding Crashers today and it was really disappointing. Cheap nudity, cheesy scenes and a length that dragged between laughs made us wish we had gone to see something else. The acting is okay (although I wouldn't have believed Jane Seymour would lower herself to this film's level) and some of the bantering is snappy and funny, but it doesn't save the movie.

There are some funny parts, but overall a disappointing choice to see this movie.

Profound & Unforgettable
3 March 2005
My husband and I see a lot of movies and usually spend the drive home talking about what we thought. That's about all the discussion or thought we give to most of the movies we see. Not the case with Million Dollar Baby. I've had a hard time getting this one off of my mind. I went to sleep thinking about it, woke up thinking about it, and have recalled its emotions many times today.

I knew the movie was about an upcoming woman boxer and in fact it started out like an underdog "Rocky"-type flick. Character development was perfection - you learned enough of the background to understand why each character became the person they were, but much was left unrevealed- some of which I'm still wondering about today.

The deep emotions of joy, triumph, & overcoming your past were balanced with enough sadness to be moved to tears. And questions were raised that are truly NOT black and white, regardless of your religious or ethical beliefs.

This movie left me sadder than most movies I've ever seen. I was moved in a way few movies have impacted me.

It's not a "feel good" movie, but it is a movie that will make you feel. Go and experience Million Dollar Baby. Go on a day you can handle some pain and sadness. It is worth your time & tears and you will be rewarded with outstanding performances from an amazing cast.

More than Awesome - A Masterpiece of a Movie
27 February 2004
Seeing the Passion of the Christ is an experience no Christian, at least, should miss. I realize Mel Gibson needed to use some creative license, but reading some of the posts and critics' reviews about "Jesus wasn't tortured, he was beaten", and that the violence was "over the top" etc. really frustrate me.

Those who watched his interview on Primetime Live, or have done some research, know that Gibson based much of his movie on the writings of Catherine Emmerich and other Christian "Mystics", who through visions from God, wrote detailed accounts of Christ's actual crucifixion. And, Gibson actually lightened things up a bit by allowing the "flashback scenes" for respite during the scourging and walk to the crucifixion. Gibson apparently poured through literally thousands of documents and writings to portray the passion as factually as possible; he also relied on guidance from the Holy Spirit. For those who can't fathom visions from God, guidance from the Holy Spirit, etc., these are matters of faith, and can't be rationalized, so I won't try. But, as difficult as taking in Jesus' very-human anxiety in the Garden of Gethsemane, his scourging and ultimate death on the cross were, they appeared to me less as violence than as immense suffering for the love of all mankind.

As a mom, the scenes with Mary and Jesus were the most heartbreaking of all. I rarely cry in everyday life, but I had a hard time keeping my eyes dry throughout the movie. It was a once in a lifetime experience and I pray the love and bond I feel for Christ today never fades. I appreciate His suffering so much more than just reading about it could ever convey, and I want to be a better person for the rest of my life, because I understand with greater clarity, how much He loves me/us.

This movie can improve the life of anyone who sees it, and who wants to receive its message: of forgiveness, of hope and of everlasting life.
