Cute, enjoyable gender bender comedy.
1 February 2007
Nobody's Perfect is an idea and truth that perhaps a few of us could take more seriously and do a little less demanding of ourselves or others to be. Maybe close could be just as good only "perfect" is a word that sort of enlists expectations. Either way Nobody' Perfect is a Chad Lowe vehicle that he plays pretty well. Get the sort of pun, pretty well. Actually he does play it pretty well where I cannot decide whether Chad plays the 'female' portion of the character as if we're in on the bending while other characters in the film are not and can't seem to tell. Like a couple of other teen and 'tween films of this type, He's My Girl and Just One Of The Guys, Nobody's Perfect is no ones waste of time. Thank God it wasn't anything like a Miss Congeniality or something where Chad might have had to go up against others dressed in nightlife finery. That award/title would have been hard to come by and there just is not that much padding a man can do. Daughters of lock up your husbands cause Nobody's Perfect turns out the lights with laughs.

Bracken's World (1969–1970)
8/10
Entertaining look into the Hollywood Studio, starlet, and star building system.
13 September 2006
This very short-lived series was totally entertaining and got me to the TV each week it was on as it shows one or two of the ways that movies get cast and made and the intrigue and treachery that can if you believe it be involved. That's what made Bracken's World entertaining as from top to bottom the studio head, the agents, the starlets feigned friendship or it was real and got hurt or the men and their efforts or dating complications across studios. Although this system is said gone in favor of today's star/agent driven self-building and star owned production companies maybe this would make Bracken's World even more entertaining now in comparison to how would such things work today. For instance having seen Inside Daisy Clover and learned what things like looping are and having watched Natalie Wood act out a breakdown on screen during some looping whenever I feel I can detect such a thing as voice dubbing/ syncing(looping) that is not quite right or sounds like someone else other than the actor in question in todays deleted scenes of dvds I cannot help but think of Bracken's World and the studio system and how stars and studios did it then and do it today. I remember being enthralled by the finagling of the actors and actresses on Bracken's World particularly Peter Haskell, Elizabeth Allen, Karen Jensen not Marten Jensen as I thought I had remembered and even Jeanne Cooper, Kay Chancellor of todays The Young & The Restless were regulars or made stops at Bracken's World.

I am not sure if this series is available on DVD but if it ever is hope it is the complete series and try it out. If for nothing else maybe the deleted scenes that might be included.

The Best Star Trek movie bar none. My opinion.
13 September 2006
The best Star Trek movie bar none. My opinion. After the very well-meaning effort of Mr. Douglas Trumbull, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, which plays much more thought provoking today and maybe spawned Star Trek Voyager, the series. No criticism of Mr. Trumbull whose movie may be the most important of the entire movie series and the different TV series' that have followed but on that day and in anticipation Trekkies a word which I do not snarl at were waiting and looking for rip-roaring shoot 'em up Captain Kirk and the crew. This came in next with Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan and mighty well it did Ricardo Montalban never to be forgotten for it. I find fault only in one line in the film or portion of a line where God is referred to as a proved myth because the line is spoken in past tense. I know I gasped at such a statement and it is my honest belief that like everything we have like Manna fell from Heaven the Manna that Star Trek is in entertainment is provided by and allowed by God maybe inspite of a thought that He myth-wise is, ever was, or will be unreal. Nicholas Meyer did in my opinion a tremendous job directing this film and I am not sure what much other he has done since with his direction talents but given such an opportunity and not myself a direction or film school student I would have to guess that his aim was making a good and entertaining film not propaganda with such a devoted and large audience its' mind wide open for such by a franchise it loved and loves. Now that is a director who can entertain or thought provoke without forcing you to end up with his/ her opinion. Director's of today improve tremendously with super efforts but little things slip by I cannot detect in Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan and excellent film well known but escapist.

A new Star Trek movie after all that have come is said in production. Let's hope for the best. I do.

Leap of Faith (1992)

Like got milk?
13 September 2006
It took me a very long time to see this movie when I knew that I intentionally wanted to. Being a Steve Martin fan from Roxanne which I decried before it came out as a "Can't do anything new or funny with that, Cyrano, idea." I found that it was delightful and thought provoking and funny with motivation in my life. I was missing it.

Maybe after that I was frightened to see Leap Of Faith but I have now and I think it is an excellent little epic with possibly huge proportions depending on ones mood. It could be a kick in the head that provokes good or causes you to say "Oh no."

The entire cast is excellent.

CBS Schoolbreak Special: What If I'm Gay? (1987)
Season 4, Episode 5
10/10
Nice handling of a shocking situation, disappointment, subject.
9 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Like commenter rayinla-1 I saw this movie on HBO when originally broadcast and was very moved by it. Only thing is it was an Afterwork Special not an HBO Afterschool Special for me. Though it has been quite awhile since I saw this movie I review it anyway since I consider it to be a basis or foundation of some of my own counseling not that I have done but that I have when my employer me in a bad situation offered Employee Assistance which I accepted submitting myself to it needed because of another individual my viewable life, example, had influence on. I am reminded by What If I'm Gay? by another movie National Lampoon Barely Legal AKA: After School Special, 2003. In 'What If..' a very nice boy/man is growing up in ways he had not expected and is keeping hidden probably in the hope it will pass not understood or yet embraced by him. This movie and it's lead, Richard Joseph Paul, so impressed me and himself that when I also saw another movie of his later not expecting him, Quick Change, 1990, I was delighted to see that he was alright so believable was his character interpretation in 'What If...' I saw the Quick Change character as his growth and peace, normalcy, since 'What If I'm Gay?' kind of like transposition onto the actor himself when I do not know anything about the actor but his talent totally convinced me and maybe under stress myself at the time I might have needed to identify with someone who was okay and still someone or an example I could hope to be and maybe not go to the bad place. The combination of these things among other things, other film, led me to see that one can be prejudiced against themself and believe that only the things and manner of what others, successes, show us is who we are or will be and we have no charge, say, or ability to prevent it. It is said often that God does not like robots so why should it be that all people who may have a need, an acceptance, some will say choice desire for their own, to act the same? In many cases the majority somewhat light. Such films as What If I'm Gay? in conjunction with other teen movies where some make adult video in their parents' basement on a lark might help to see that the second time might be the charm as is hinted in After School Special or that there is a way that God will still have our life among His own and be proud of it that you are His even if things are not exactly perfect and a little crooked. It even begins with a threat of eunuchs which of course does not actually happen so I guess figuratively is the order of the day and not literally in National Lampoon Barely Legal AKA: After School Special. Fairly good movie that helps to understand teens and growth or who we were before we had to handle the needs of teens ourselves. Maybe even the postponed needs of adults.

Maurice (1987)

Hope in a film.
31 August 2006
The comments of author Rita Chang on the film Maurice sum it up truly quite nicely what I too believe this film is about. It is about the nature of the human animal God has or has not created and how "in, love." can have a reverse yet true meaning if one can accept it as the Bible can say or if one must accept it. This beautiful yet heartbreaking film actually made me cry the first time I saw it. I will not say exactly what I was thinking but it had to do with my father. Maurice is said to be from the writings of author E.M. Forster, autobiographical it is thought in some aspects, but requested only to be published after his death. It is uncommon in being an unconventional period love story where two men are the subject and later a third of some importance. It has text and subtext of what one must do, cannot, or tries to do to get, hold, maybe even destroy love. Frankly, if one can suspend disgust for the protagonists of the subject and their love it may even be instructional where traditional love is concerned which often sometimes is not nearly valued enough and taken for granted. Please be aware the conservative may be horrified while the less conservative may be bored and feel a threat of their own. Wonderful film which I think of as a true achievement for the Merchant-Ivory-Jhabavala triumvirate team. I also like as an accompaniment Room With A View. Separately wonderful. Together a more fully blown story with either ending possible.

3 Ninjas (1992)
10/10
Cute kidvid parents and others can enjoy too.
30 August 2006
Kidvid made by the kid conscious I would suspect as 3 Ninjas is a kid comedy of sorts about three pre-teen brothers and their grandfather who teaches them the ways of being a ninja. This first film turned into a series of four 3 of which I have seen and not quite like the original 3 Ninjas but none is to be just discarded either if you like the characters and can deal with more. A lot of care is shown in making a good and well made film such as this suitable for kids and adults alike who can stand enjoying it without embarrassment or whom have kids of their own or are uncles, aunts, etc. and can simply share with them. Such a film like this can be the break an adult may not know they need from all the adult fare that is little more than blood and guts and the results of the hard knocks of life. Just don't forget 3 Ninjas is for kids and start missing the physical interactions of adult films and the stronger language and many hours you may find yourself relaxed in sharing with your kids and having them appropriately entertained and perhaps a bit instructed.

Feel good kid fare that might work on unjaded adults as well. And if the above enjoyment happens those who care to may be encouraged to continue the use of their talents to produce, direct, provide more.

Soap opera? The Wings Of The Dove again.
29 August 2006
I am not sure what the purpose of this film, The Heart Of Me, a remade The Wings Of The Dove also starring Helena Bonham Carter is but it is pale in comparison however more true to life it could be. Where Wings is heart wrenching Heart is shocking and maybe just a romantic vehicle for Paul Bettany to inspire all possible fans. The Heart Of Me and The Wings Of The Dove are kind of like the double play of Dangerous Liaisons, which I prefer, to Valmont. However if you like romantic tragedy or character weakness with listen dialog The Heart of Me is quite possible for you. Helena Bonham Carter normally a fairly good actress in these period pieces seems absolutely lost and not sure what her character is to accomplish and she comes across that way, unsympathetic where in Wings on course she has the part in her hands. Olivia Williams new to me acquits herself well but still Paul Bettany seems to be the target or missing portion of The Heart Of Me not sure his character is growing or coming out of hiding. Therefore my conclusion is Bettany vehicle not near as good as Linus Roache vehicle, The Wings Of The Dove. Still worth a look for shock value and character assessment.

Hanna's War (1988)
10/10
Outstanding film about outstanding person with outstanding performance.
16 August 2006
As a another reviewer states Hanna's War is an outstanding film about an outstanding person, Hanna "Anniko" Senesh, who would become the Jewish Joan Of Arc. Unfortunately I diverge in opinion not agreeing that Miss Detmers as the lead is too beautiful to be taken seriously as a resistance fighter. In truth for me her performance is not held back by her beauty but makes it all the more stark in the terror of the sadistic brutality as a resistor she faces. Maruschka Detmers performance is brave, poignant, heartfelt or understood, and totally believable. In other words for me "In the zone." from the opening credits. If you would like to learn about the suffering of someone else for something they believe in and be impressively entertained give Hanna's War with Maruschka Detmers a try. My hat is off also to Ellen Burstyn as Hanna's mother a much well known and famous actress who could have made effort to walk off with the film. In that it is a team effort perhaps of two actress' but not an All About Eve situation.

Tomcats (2001)
8/10
Cute comedy and is funny just not some other film. Itself.
24 May 2006
Compared to other films like Scary Movie, American Pie, There's Something About Mary, etc. Tomcats comes out to me way far ahead. The movies compared to mean to contain comedic nastiness of a sort that really is not funny but actually is possibly debilitating. Tomcats has its' share of off-color language and sexual innuendo and directness but it does not go too way over the top into continual pure dirt. I for one feel Gregory Poirier has a comedic touch and got a lot from his cast as maybe fun was had by all on the set and it shows in the film and featurettes of the DVD I purchased twice and have given. The menu alone for the DVD and the opening credits I can play for hours they are just that cute to me for the film they are the setup for.

Here, here to Tomcats. Need more.

Bewitched (1964–1972)
10/10
Bewitched: American Classic seen & enjoyed by many.
16 May 2006
I have to agree with Valerie Preston of Australia that Bewitched and Elizabeth Montgomery are lovely and elegant classics of the highest craft and entertainment order. It is also a surprise, always is, to me when I hear American TV mentioned by someone from another country with the same affection I or we have for it as often I cannot fathom that American TV is even seen abroad. Having purchased and watched Miss Montgomery and Bewitched: The Complete First Season I am lovingly and joyfully taken back to a great time in TV and life itself and preparation for life if you can believe that and I hope you do. There should be more Bewithceds today if that is a word but many of us even the world is a much different people not so willing to embrace joy and encourage joy giving talent and beauty.

Is there something wrong with love? I hope this DVD set will help to bring it back even to Australia not myself meaning or willing to be a hog. Her family, Miss Mongomery's, and all associated with Bewitched can be proud.

BeastMaster (1999–2002)
Uplifitng show well acted and thought out. Mindful of the original.
29 April 2006
As some might think this Beastmaster version not dark as or enough considering the original movie it comes from I must disagree feeling it has very good and thought provoking points in relation to the movie and that the movie could not explore.

Daniel Goddard is perfectly cast as a new model Beastmaster a little more officially muscled while Marc Singer muscled enough the original and movie Beastmaster was also just plain imposing in such a way you might feel he could defend the toughest tiger or lion. Daniel Goddard makes up for this in the muscle of his build in relation to the animals he cares for and tries to save from harm avoiding conflict if possible.

Beastmaster, the series, is worthy to be called so in relation to the movie and Marc Singer if for no other reason than the complimentary to each other comparison and the exploration of love, care, and issues of animals and man in the resistance of evil for the cause of good. The series is also well filmed and looks great too, a style all its' own. I for one am sorry it could not get a couple of more seasons into the can much is missing those seasons might have included.
