Guava Island (2019)
Guava Island is a Must Watch
I rarely say this, but Guava Island is a must watch. The Hiro Murai directed film runs off a very similar style and tone to the hit Atlanta. After having debuted at Coachella, this Childish Gambino production at times feels like one of his music videos stretched over an hour. Donald Glover has a quirky style, which is fun to watch and this short film is definitely a treat for the eyes. This film is on Amazon Prime, which doesn't have the same range of quality of Netflix, but maybe this will be where their content starts to get more hype.
Black Summer (2019)
Black Summer simply didn't work
The sub-genre of zombie TV shows is already a crowded one, and Netflix's Black Summer is proof that the genre has gone stale. The prequel to Z Nation didn't work on any level for me. However, it would recommend people watch the opener to get a feel for the show, even though each episode got progressively worse. Honestly, I felt the eight episode show is just another disappointing release from Netflix, and am I the only one who feels the quality of what they've produced has dwindled. So here is why I didn't enjoy the show.
The Bold Type: The New Normal (2019)
The Bold Type is back and its still brilliant
So The Bold Type is back for a third season, and its starting to live up to its title. Even though this workplace dramedy's ratings weren't great over its first two seasons, its quality was consistently strong, and it's season three opener is pretty solid. I hope this season there is more of a conversation around The Bold Type as it deals with some relevant subject matter. However, if it doesn't, I'm just happy to see the three protagonists back and watch the chaos of their lives. As ever I'm going to do my best to keep it spoiler light, but there will be a few in this review.
The Perfect Date (2019)
Solid rom-com
So yesterday Netflix released a new rom-com The Perfect Date, and it did just enough to stop my growing rom-com crave. Now whereas this film isn't perfect, and it doesn't live up to the classics in the genre such as Notting Hill or When Harry Met Sally, it is enjoyable and a pretty standard movie. Even in its short run time, the film tries to push the genre and has a more contemporary feel. This is a film for teenage girls, and honestly, it doesn't apologise for it.
