Lucifer: Save Lucifer (2019)

Netflix proves it can resurrect the dead
9 May 2019
Great job by Netflix at resurrecting the series. There was a significantly better writing in the 4th season that allowed for great character growth. I'm looking forward to season 5, and see where the story goes. This show could easily become a front runner in the Netflix line up. The series fares far better on Netflix than Fox given the subject matter and less stringent content restrictions of it's new home.

Visually stunning but story wasn't

Warning: Spoilers
To be fair, it would be tough to top Infinity War, but was this seriously the best script they could come up with? The time travel trope was played out two decades ago, so why rehash it again? No idea, but the studio reheated some "Back to the Future" left-overs and went for the lowest hanging fruit on the tree.

Okay, so now Stark and cohorts are going to fix is all by going back in time and "pre-stealing" the infinity stones then politely returning them the instant they were stolen to begin with presumably to "not effect" the timeline. Except, they already affected it when Loki ran off with the Tesseract when they bungled the first attempt. So what came of that? A giant, gaping plot hole is what.

The whole sequence exists simply to remind the audience that Captain America still hasn't gotten over his first love, who by the way is about 60 years old at the time they visit, but she looks just the same. And flat attempt to make the audience feel empathy for Stark as he engages with his father commiserating on parenthood which is conveniently placed before he dies.

Finally, the culmination of the Avenger's time travelling hi-jinks come to fruition when one of the smartest guys around, Banner-Hulk, puts it on and makes a wish. What does he wish for? To undo Thanos' eradication of 50% of the life in the universe. Makes sense right? But he's supposed to be a genius. Wouldn't a better wish be: Thanos was never born? Way more lives saved that way. But why didn't he? Plot There was a need to send Tony off with a heroes death which fell flat.

So, to save Hawkeye, Future Nebula kills her past self with no apparent effect. If you died in the past wouldn't you cease to be in the future? Simple logic. Never mind, this movie jumped the logic rails shortly after title splash rolled.

Ultimately, the movie plays like a Michael Bay boom fest and that's all it really has going for it. The script is cringe worthy and written with one goal in mind: To give the actors whose contracts were up, a way out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Technically the movie is superior, but the writing is rubbish.

Black Summer (2019–2021)
2/10
Interesting chapter-esque episodes aren't enough to save this from a horrible script and poor production value.

Warning: Spoilers
The novelty of zombie apocalypse stories wore off a few years ago, but like every other overused film menace, there is still possibility to bring something new. However, Black Summer just rehashes the same old mechanics while presenting a cringe worthy story. It's basically a low rent Walking Dead minus the coherent writing and budget. That isn't to say a large budget is needed to make a great story, but what is needed is a compelling drama with characters the audience cares about. The segmented format of each episode is interesting, but the rapid transitions prevented this viewer from building any empathy for the individual characters. In the end, I just didn't care enough to continue the series. The show suffers from two major problems which stand out like sore thumbs. First the costume department just put this show on cruise control. Military uniforms were improperly worn, name tapes disappeared and reappeared between scenes, facial hair worn by all the male "soldiers", and troops running around without equipment. A little research goes a long way as far as costume design goes, and ensuring continuity of costumes between scenes keeps from pulling the audience out of the story. Secondly, and more problematic, is the script. It lacks any real focus for the narrative and gets bogged down in idiotic situations. A zombie apocalypse doesn't equal the Road Warrior, so why are people trying to steal gas from a fleeing vehicle while thousands of cars sit by the roadside presumably with gas in the tank? Why does no one attempt to arm themselves instead of just following the one guy with a gun? Why didn't the minivan pick up the other victims? Why does the dad try to get through the checkpoint when he knew he wouldn't? Why do a million and one other idiotic things happen in this series where people do not behave with any sense of logic? The answer is a bad script.
