I didn't know this was a "Christian" film when I rented it and before I realized that it was, I did not like the acting of the "demon". It was goofy to me. The facial twitching was contrived and unnatural. The sound editing wasn't great and I had to put subtitles on. Overall, I appreciated the heavy themes but they were laid out too literally. Where was the symbolism??

The most disappointing part to me was that the true message of Jesus was not delivered! The moral of the story was that this man, about to die, was trapped as an unwilling bystander and the "demon" would use his body to commit acts of murder - against his will. The demon's main argument was that mankind's love of God is meaningless without God's gift of "free will". The blessing of Jesus' blood shed for us was so that in each moment, we can reject sin and be forgiven. In fairness, the demon's host, James, never did ask God for forgiveness during the movie. He did say repeatedly that the demon "made him" do things. Could James have ever even resisted? I just have a hard time believing that demons possess children. There are too many stories of parents murdering their children because they "believe" kids are possessed. That is a dangerous message. Shame on the creators for that mistake- they're doing the devil's bidding.

The other grave mistake was the heavy handed bashing of leftist themes. We are ALL sinners. Why do you think the demon didn't criticize gluttons, lushes, and people who idolize celebrities or politicians? How many Christians resist the temptation to divorce and remarry, warmonger, live in excessive debt or engage in hyper-consumerism? What of the self righteousness, arrogance and pride of some self proclaimed Christians? Do we think our McMansions, three car garage, extravagant Vacations, and shady business practices can really be defended in the name of prosperity and excused as God's blessing? God knows when you just can't resist temptation. If God needs us to act on free will then the devil's trick was allowing Christianity to be turned into a commercial product and convincing us that if we're wealthy, we're really just good Americans serving God. I have seen too many people excuse their own sins and more harshly admonish the sins of others. If you've been convinced that your sins are less egregious than those of others, maybe YOU are the one with the demon working overtime because that is antithetical to Christ's message.

You'll love it or hate it

I happened to love this show and have rewatched several episodes and I laugh every time. Maria is truly a complex individual. She's got absurdist humor with a touch of black comedy so if you don't appreciate that, please don't bother watching. She doesn't seem to try to sell any kind of wokism as some reviewers indicated, she just wants to be a decent person to the characters she encounters. The theme song refrain is "I don't know what I'm doing, more than half of the time". Maria struggles with mental illness but it isn't the defining characteristic of her personality. She simply understands that there is really no RIGHT way to deal with this messed up world. Personally, I find her social commentary on the show absolutely BRILLIANT.

For those advising others not to watch: just because you don't get it doesn't mean "IT" isn't there.

Snowflakes are melting

This film was so so.... just as full of cheap thrills as the rest of The Purge movies. The acting wasn't terrible. The violence and effects were as shocking as expected. The story line was just as crappy as all the Purge movies. This movie is a FICTIONAL version of America.... just like the rest of the Purge movies. Obviously there are a lot of people in the reviews who were very triggered by some of the concepts. Guess people don't like seeing a mirror held up to the absurdity of how half the country sees the other half. Was it cringey to see a Nazi yell the names of guns? Remember when we all agreed Nazi's were bad and stupid? Well if you think this movie was political because it pointed out that these are bad guys then maybe you need to think about how you align morally. Remember Jesus loves you but you will be judged.

John Wick with kittens not puppies.

The end (not ending) was the only part better than the first 30 seconds. There was no character development. No funny moments. Actually I forgot... what movie was I reviewing? Something about soyboys wanting to express toxic masculinity? Bye.

Sofia Coppola used to be fun

I suppose it is just a pet peeve but I always find movies about movies, writing, theatre, improv, etc self indulgent and out of touch. The set of New York or California also puts me off... it's just too lazy and out of touch with the rest of the world audience. This movie almost feels like it's a commercial for hotels, restaurants, artists and resorts. All things way out of most of our price ranges, decidedly not bougie but elitist. Do I seem jealous? Enough about me. The kids were absolutely adorable and the little ones' activities were natural but like most kids in movies they are a furniture. I really appreciated the interracial relationships between all the characters being a non-issue. Finally- now we're getting somewhere!!! Like the kids, Marlon, Jenny, and everyone else we'd just accessories without mush substance. Rashida's character perfectly captured the essence of a worn-out, uninspired, insecure, unfulfilled, uninterested and frankly, uninteresting mom. Honestly based off of the bit of her personality I don't know how she was a writer. She needed attention and an unwanted adventure, with intrigue, and a touch of danger with a sexist older man and her dad delivered. In usual Bill Murray fashion, he carried the movie. I couldn't wait to hear what he would say next; my favorite being allusions to Desmond Morris. I wonder if Sofia wrote his whole character. If she did, kudos... he was wonderfully compelling. It was a bit hard to reconcile a man in power being such a flirt but there was some redemption in that he wasn't chauvinistic. His daughter constantly reminded him how inappropriate he was but I guess some men can't be be tamed, certainly not in their 70's. I grew up long enough ago to know to accept the nature of it and recently enough ago to know women need to take power and speak up, without it being a flirtatious slap on the arm saying you're bad. They already know that. Anyways... I loved 2 of Sofia's films with all of my heart. Virgin Suicides is top 20 and Lost in Translation top 5. The soundtracks alone made them worth watching and the choices were absolute movie making magic. Perfect movies in every way, color, characters, cinematography. This movie, not so much. A close-up of a tear in a martini is hardly redemption. Was there any music in this other than crappy jazz and Murray singing (which I would have preferred to jazz)? I guess there was... I just checked the playlist. I'm a worn out mom and used to be more perceptive. Not many actors could have made Bill Murray's character endearing and without him I would have turned it off... no disrespect Rashida, you did a fine job with what you were given. Sofia... what happened to you? You used to be fun.

Great Documentary
5 May 2020
I watch so many documentaries that I forget many. After several years, this one holds up so kudos to the team who brought this story to us. I can assure you that labeling a person with a disability as "inspirational" can be a cruel and burdensome punishment. Every child has a strong drive to fulfill their family's expectations and to earn their approval. Matty's family may have better served their son by putting an emphasis on something other than the physical prowess required to achieve success in competitive sports. Some say he is an inspiration. I say he was a tortured soul that was effectively victimized by those who should have fostered his natural talents. Perhaps they lacked the empathy, creativity, or intelligence to realize how their narrow mindedness impacted their son. I hope this cautionary tale saves another young person from being victimized by their own family's ignorance.
