I didn't know this was a "Christian" film when I rented it and before I realized that it was, I did not like the acting of the "demon". It was goofy to me. The facial twitching was contrived and unnatural. The sound editing wasn't great and I had to put subtitles on. Overall, I appreciated the heavy themes but they were laid out too literally. Where was the symbolism??
The most disappointing part to me was that the true message of Jesus was not delivered! The moral of the story was that this man, about to die, was trapped as an unwilling bystander and the "demon" would use his body to commit acts of murder - against his will. The demon's main argument was that mankind's love of God is meaningless without God's gift of "free will". The blessing of Jesus' blood shed for us was so that in each moment, we can reject sin and be forgiven. In fairness, the demon's host, James, never did ask God for forgiveness during the movie. He did say repeatedly that the demon "made him" do things. Could James have ever even resisted? I just have a hard time believing that demons possess children. There are too many stories of parents murdering their children because they "believe" kids are possessed. That is a dangerous message. Shame on the creators for that mistake- they're doing the devil's bidding.
The other grave mistake was the heavy handed bashing of leftist themes. We are ALL sinners. Why do you think the demon didn't criticize gluttons, lushes, and people who idolize celebrities or politicians? How many Christians resist the temptation to divorce and remarry, warmonger, live in excessive debt or engage in hyper-consumerism? What of the self righteousness, arrogance and pride of some self proclaimed Christians? Do we think our McMansions, three car garage, extravagant Vacations, and shady business practices can really be defended in the name of prosperity and excused as God's blessing? God knows when you just can't resist temptation. If God needs us to act on free will then the devil's trick was allowing Christianity to be turned into a commercial product and convincing us that if we're wealthy, we're really just good Americans serving God. I have seen too many people excuse their own sins and more harshly admonish the sins of others. If you've been convinced that your sins are less egregious than those of others, maybe YOU are the one with the demon working overtime because that is antithetical to Christ's message.
