Tight story that delivers solid suspense, tension and entertainment. A promising directorial debut from Francis Galluppi
28 May 2024
A well-produced film that clocks in at 1h 30m giving us a quick tight story that delivers solid suspense, tension and entertainment.

The characters are basic. The type of person they are shown in the first few seconds when introducing them. The premise isn't too original but the execution is done well enough to merit a watch. Clearly taking inspiration from Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs & The Hateful Eight, two great films.

The music does a lot of heavy lifting delivering key moments that wouldn't work without it. The screenplay isn't winning no awards but it does the job.

There are a couple scenes that could have been edited to speed them up but equally the tension is rising within the drawn out segments so it could go either way and the director chose drawn out.

There are some character choices that annoyed me a little but it doesn't completely ruin the experience. No moments are out of character, I just wished that guy turned left

The best parts of the film is Richard Brake acting, the music and the majority of the film being laced with suspense & tension. I got what I expected going in.

I do wish there were more to the story so it could develop into some greater. It's held back by it's simple nature as well as being a plus

For a directorial debut, this is promising and I'm be looking forward to what Francis Galluppi delivers next.

A Welcomed Prequel Expansion to Fury Road
25 May 2024
A welcomed prequel expansion to Fury Road but nowhere near as tightly knitted. The frenetic pacing has been completely ditched for a different type of story telling. Makes sense since this film spans decades meanwhile Fury Road is a couple days. Despite that, going in I thought it was going to be another rollercoaster ride but immediately I had to change and adjust to Furiosa's style of storytelling.

Chris Hemsworth steals the show like Charlize Theron did in Fury Road.

I have issues with the story structure and focus. Miller wanted to expand the world and tell Furiosa's origin but seemed to unable to balance the two together. There are title cards seperating each segment of the film into parts. I would have prefered the film without these, they feel so uninspired with the simple white basic font too.

The pacing takes a hit since the structure has some issues but in the end it does all come together nicely. Did this blow me away like Fury Road did? No which does leave a bit of a sour taste in my mouth while leaving the cinema but the action is still a spectacle. There were concern with CGI usage and in the final film, it is prevalent but there are sequences that I wouldn't know how else people would create it with the framing. I don't mind it and it didn't break immersion.

Character developments was done off screen at time which confused me since this is an origin story so the whole point is to get the audience to connect with the character more. I don't think the runtime is used at it's full potential. There are several moments that last too long and others that are completely glazed over which would have been so interesting to see, even perhaps a film dedicated to that part.

The expansion of the world is some of the best parts. The dynamic of the 3 central points and how the wasteland functions was cool to see. Furiosa doesn't have nowhere near as much replay value as Fury Road but it is worth watching at least once even if you're not a die hard fan to appreciate the world building and action setpieces George Miller crafts. The man still hasn't lost his touch which is mindblowing.

Civil War (2024)

Solid film but I needed more for it to resonate on another level character or plot wise.
21 April 2024
Gunshot sounds are so loud and explosive. Some points in the film, a legitimate jumpscare which serves the film so well. War is horror and this film displays that perfectly.

The film doesn't focus on the war itself, merely there as a backdrop. That did cause some confusion and didn't allow me to fully envelop myself in the story as much as I wanted because I didn't know what was going on fully.

The crew of characters are good and well-acted but I questioned some of their actions at points and why they go to such lengths to achieve it. In such a dangerous area, they risk their own lives for photos to show the rest of the world. The film does explain their point of view but since we don't know the details of the war, I couldn't get behind the character's desire to get the best picture.

I did enjoy the road trip aspect to film and constantly moving forward inducing anxiety on if we'll meet friendly or hostile people. This structure carries the film significantly since the story itself isn't too deep along with simple character arcs.

I had a good time watching regardless of the flaws. Going in, I was expecting a heavier politically driven story but we got nothing like that. A complete misdirect from the marketing team that got people in seats but afterwards possibly left a sour taste in their mouth if they didn't enjoy what was shown.

I respect Alex Garland for taking this approach with his film. It's much more personal take on a war film and providing thought-provoking scenes with not many clichés insight. I needed characters that were developed more for this approach to resonate better with me.

I would not be surprised if this film got academy award recognision for sound design, it really did make the film alongside the good cinematography.

& yeah, that Jesse Plemons scene was delicious. Alex Garland knows how to build tension which ultimately wins people over.

Monkey Man (2024)

Phenomenal action sequences with a mediocre story and structure that takes away from the emotional punch needed to raise this film up
11 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The first 40 minutes are done well leading to a glorious fight sequence. After that, the film's pace halts. We get an unexplained rescue by this community leader. There is a whole sequence of training and spiritual awakening that could have been energising and done well but after the explosive action sequence, all this was structured poorly. The energy evaporated during this part of the film and it could never be recaptured.

I'm not going to comment on the political messaging since I'm not versed in that area. We get another action sequence in the same building as the first leading to the climax and there should have been anticipation, energy and dread coming for revenge but it all played out too safe and predictable. That would be fine if this film was filled with fantastic action that it can provide but we hardly get any. With this film being marketed as an action film, I was expecting more.

All the BTS stories coming out about how devoted Dev Patel is got me excited to see what he cooked up. He did indeed cook but the film focused way too much on the other boring aspects that weren't done as well as the action.

I was severely disappointed with Monkey Man after watching. The journey of revenge didn't feel satisfying becaused it was cluttered with too many extra and elongated scenes. The flashbacks were constantly spoon-fed to the audience to a point it got annoying instead of experiencing the emotional impact desired. I have no doubt Dev Patel will have another go around directing and I hope he centres it around the action more because he definitely excels there.

Potential here for a great film but bogged down by excess scenes
7 April 2024
There is a powerful story of redemption in this film. I found the main plot beats clever with some story reveals surprising. The premise hooked me and Michael Keaton is a cool guy so why not I thought.

At around the 50 min mark, I realised the slow pace wasn't going away. There is a lot of fat that could have been cut to shorten the runtime if this pace was chosen. The story doesn't provide enough meat to warrant the 2 hours. I thought the dementia element would have been utilised in a more creative ways from the premise. Some extremely heavy handed dialog especially in the first act got me wondering did I make a mistake watching this.

The story wasn't executed and structured well enough to have a much larger cathartic impact so the audience could relate to the characters on a deeper level. Fight scenes felt clunky in the edit but I suppose this isn't an action film. The 2nd act suffers the most from all the negatives and I did get bored when the anticipation and thrill should have been rising.

If this was going to be an action film, it would have been cool to see the protagonist forget he's in a fight, forgot who's the right person to hit, forgot key details at key moments. Since they didn't go this route, the film needed more tension in another way. It felt like events were just unfolding with no real suspense.

It was cool seeing Al Pacino for the few minutes he's in this. James Marsden does a decent job.

It's a hard task to direct a memory based film when the bar is set at Memento.

Ferrari (2023)

It's a good film but marketing campaign needed a revision
22 March 2024
This film contains one of the funniest, most contrived deaths of all time for a character with less than one minute of screen time. There is no way it went down like that.

Adam Driver & Penélope Cruz put it good performances. The rest of the cast are fine and do the job. The drivers aren't developed that well which makes it hard to connect with them while racing, raising the stakes.

This film contains two plots: securing the win at the Mille Miglia for recognition and marketability so the company doesn't go backrupt, and Enzo Ferrari's lineage steming from his estranged wife and mistress. The latter plot line taking a majority of the runtime which isn't bad but the film is marketed as a racing film.

If you are looking for a racing film, I would recommend Le Mans '66, Rush and even Gran Turismo because this film is more of a dive into Enzo Ferrari's personal life and less exotic, heart-pumping racing.

The trailer gave way too much away revealing key moments and some of the best scenes. The CGI is easily spotted and did take me out the film during crucial moments.

If you are interested in learning about Enzo Ferrari's career and life during this period and if you're a fan of Adam Driver then it's an easy recommendation since it's a good film on those fronts but I was left desiring better constructed racing sequences to elevate this film.

Disappointing, convoluted plot & atrocious visual effects
7 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The film started off decent. The first moments in the fictional world with Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa & John Cena is more entertaining than the rest of the film. Despite that, the visual effects are blatantly obvious to the audience and the over the top skate boarding truck took me out it at the jump. I thought this is happening because it's the fictional bit from the book but fast forward a little and I was wrong.

The premise is original and interesting combined with the fact it's directed by Matthew Vaugh who has shown us he can do action well in Kingsman. I was hoping for some good action and a decent story. Disappointed on both fronts.

There is a blinking effect that is used many times through out the film, it's used in the train sequence when switching between Rockwell and Cavill and some others moments. It was giving me a slight headache. The amount of times it kept on happening too...

The plot is heavy convoluted. There are so many twists and not enough time given for any of them to have any real emotional impact. Towards the 3rd act, I just became numb and was generating any kind of twist in my head while watching because I knew the writers couldn't help themselves. With no surprise, they did keep coming. I'll give credit where it's due and the Brian Cranston character is her dad reveal caught me off guard and was decent but then thinking about it more, the whole plan is to capture her, he's already got her trust as her dad, so lure her some place to capture and mission complete.

The marketing team got one over on us. Advertising all the actors that are barely in it at the front and the main characters to the side. When constructing an action adventure film, I wouldn't think Howard & Rockwell to be the front runners. Even if they did learn the fight choreography and gunplay properly, it's all smothered in CGI which downgrades it.

The other actors are wasted. Samuel L. Jackson and John Cena give a cameo. Bryan Cranston puts on his best but the screenplay gives him nothing great to do.

Towards the 3rd act, it's revealed both our leads were romantic partners before the incident. This completely threw me off guard. Rockwell's character has no reason to not treat her like he knew her from before. The whole memories line they insert is not good enough. Even after the reveal, there is zero chemistry between them, it's not believable or convincing that they are lovers.

The two action sequences, the oil skating and coloured smoke canisters plummented the film score down even more. It's asking for too much suspension of disbelief. Especially the skating scene, it's insane how over the top it gets and at the end, hardly any oil on her.

I can suspend disbelief if the story is worth it and the action set pieces are put together with care and craftmanship but it's too much for me. If you enjoyed it then I'm happy for you.

I had no clue what the post credit scene was about. From the Wiki, it's franchise bait which, if it's on this level of quality, I'm not going near it.

Closing thoughts, it's way too long for this type of story. Thanks to the convoluted plot, it needed so much time to unravel it that I wasn't invested anymore. Oh yeah, and the CGI cat that was in the trailer wasn't that big of a deal either. Rockwell's character was allergic to the cat at one point, then they forgot about it then it appears he's allergic again at the end. I thought it was gonna be some sort of twist because he stopped sneezing but nope, they must have forgotten about the little detail while writing the next twist.

As time has gone on, what has come from it makes up for it.
11 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Pros: Arnold Schwarzenegger's Mr Freeze and those top tier puns. Michael Gough's Alfred. The pacing is fine.

Robin: checking out the Batmobile I want a car. Chicks dig the car. Batman: This is why Superman works alone.

The fact this killed Batman for awhile then Nolan had the opportunity to revitalised the franchise with Batman Begins, then following made one of the greatest films of all time, The Dark Knight. The score, pretty much the same as Forever.

Cons: Love Clooney but he's not good here, the writing doesn't help. O'Donnell was alright in Forever but here, he made Robin insufferable. Uma Thurman's overacting was funny. Writing failed here again, her only ability is to blow mist conveniently going towards characters at a point. Her plan makes no sense either.

Can't believe this is the only live action Batgirl right now. This isn't Batgirl, this is some Alfred's niece that just happens to have the same name. Did Alfred know she would look at that disc even though it was for someone else? If she listened to him, she wouldn't have found the batcave and from what happened without her inclusion, Batman & Robin fail in the end. Probably would have made the film better and unpredictable.

This interpretation of Gordon has never been good but here it's so funny, it's almost good... & the action...

Don't think you can fault anyone here directly for this failure of a film. Joel Schumacher is a decent director. The cinema landscape at the time was only just getting into the superhero genre so duds like this were inevitable. As time has gone on, what has come from it makes up for it.

Great action held back by a lacklustre story
15 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I respect the dedication to the craft and the insane stunts pulled off to film such action set pieces but the story needed tightening here or at least written down so they could see how many times entity or key is mentioned and explained. I'm so disappointed the story was so lucklustre since it brings down the action with it. The emotion isn't as strong as it could be. They did Ilsa wrong which was the biggest misstep in the entire film, using AI as the villain felt cheap and the character that was the face of the AI wasn't great.

I felt the runtime and just wanted to see the train action set piece which I've never thought in another MI film and then started to realise it's at the end. I wish the CGI was used better since in some frames it's obvious breaking the immersion and then making all the effort that went into doing it practically to waste. Each action segment was good but they did them better in previous installments. They needed to keep some set pieces away from the marketing, I feel they pushed hard with the stunts because they knew the story wasn't great.

Tom Cruise is great as always, the supporting cast is great too with what they get to do, the new introductions are good but they felt underdeveloped, this will most likely get remedied in part 2. Same with the villain that hopefully gets more depth going forward.

I read Tom Cruise wanted this one to have a satisfying ending so they didn't do a cliffhanger but I feel the story structure needed revising and perhaps a good cliffhanger would have worked well in the MI franchise. Personally I wasn't satisfied and was slightly confused. In a part 1, the feeling of "I gotta see the next one NOW" needs to be prevalent and I did not feel it. I will still be there for part 2 to see how it all wraps up and hopefully it's a stronger outing. The gravitas of part 2 has disappeared now since it's not going to be the finale to the MI franchise (not surprising) but who wants to see Tom Cruise stop putting his life on the line to provide insane action.

Overall, it's a decent film but combined with the lacklustre story, mediocre pacing, and long runtime I don't see myself revising this one for awhile.
