1883 (2021)
OK, Girlie---let's knock off the narration...or...
...get a good dialect coach. Elsa is supposed to be from Tennessee? A little history: Tennessee is divided into three distinct sections (hence the THREE stars on the state flag): East, Middle and West Tennessee. All have their own type of topography, demographics and culture. Different accents? Yes...but I've never met a native Tennessean with an accent like Elsa's---perhaps she moved to Tennessee from southern Mississippi, Alabama or Georgia at some point in her life. In real life, she's a California girl...overdoing, misusing and, in general, having a hard time sounding southern (especially Tennessean).
Oh...the show itself? A solid 7 out of 10----for $$ spent and scenery. The two leads might be a bit 'out of their league' but I can work with it. Sam Elliott is... Sam Elliott. And that's more than good enough. I see that Billy Bob Thornton will join the cast---that should be a plus.
Someone in another review mentioned glaring inaccuracies about the cost of things needed by characters (lodging, stabling horses, etc.); the street vendor in Fort Worth selling an elixir for $10 ??? My inflation calculator only goes back to 1913...but 10 dollars in 1913 is $261 today. That elixir should have been ten cents, not ten dollars. Of course I know this is being picky---but for people like me, it's a flashing neon sign saying "I don't know the value of goods in the era I'm writing about." (a long neon sign)
Mr. Dutton carried 40 gallons of hot water up the stairs for he and his wife to take a bath together in their 'swanky' hotel room...does that tub have a drain? If not, do you toss the water out the window...I need to use The Google for that.
Debris (2021)
I Did Try...
...and Debris 'had me' for about 25 minutes. Sort of a combo of several other TV sci-fi series. Premise? A good one. Acting: not excellent, but surely good enough. SFX: liked 'em. That said, I did a lot of eye rolling during the final 15 minutes of the pilot episode. Did the writers go on strike? The dialogue was inane. Nothing really woke about the show...I'm thankful for that; but, if the dialogue isn't kick-started, I won't need my volume on for this show. One more viewing? My wife may kick me, but maybe.
Six Minutes to Midnight (2020)
Very Bumpy Road...
My wife and I watched this last week. Our rule is simple---we each have 'veto' power to stop watching a TV show or movie if we 'just can't take it anymore'. I nearly exercised my veto several times during Six Minutes to Midnight, but kept quiet. As it turns out, my wife also (silently at the time) considered using her veto. Neither of us spoke up. So we watched until the bitter end.
"Uneven" is a kind way to describe this effort. Good cast, nice scenery and the IDEA of the story is excellent. The execution of the story is poor. Sloppy script, poor direction, the pacing is....well, what pacing? There were times when the movie was quite serious...and then turned 'campy'. The character played by D'Arcy, in particular. I got the feeling his parts were filmed at a time when the movie was headed in one direction (camp) but ended up trying to be serious.
Before the credits rolled, we learn the German-controlled school for the education and refinement of daughters of Nazi VIPs (the school located IN ENGLAND) was real and operated for several years prior to England's entry into WWII. I noted the copyright was 2019---and it's being released in 2021. Any port in a storm.
