The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Waste of time
This is a typical product of a Hollywood system that has completely exhausted its creative energies, and only survives by badly copying books, classic movies and foreign movies. Don't spend your time watching this movie. Just read the book it is based on.
The Godfather (1972)
Overrated
No doubt a good movie, but to place it among the top ten is foolish. It hasn't introduced anything new at any cinematic level. Its influence on the living trends of cinema is practically zero (no interesting movie made after The Godfather owes anything to it). It's the paradigmatic example of what Fredric Jameson calls nostalgia cinema, a pastiche of the old conventions of gangster movies, a kind of funerary monument. Classical cinema ended long time ago (probably in the fifties), and this movie is just a well-done late survivor, a kind of aesthetic dinosaur.
Avetik (1992)
Intoxicated by Tarkovski
When watching this movie with a friend, we couldn't believe the overwhelming influence of Tarkovski. Unfortunately, this prevents the emergence of any deep originality in the film. However, photography is excellent and some images (especially the erotic ones)are interesting.
Pierrot le fou (1965)
A new beginning for cinema
At the moment of this writing, this movie has a weighted average less than its mathematical average, so in order to make sure that my vote of 10 is counted as a true and meditated vote I should say a few words on it... Every single scene is a true creation in the cinematic medium: Godard actually invented in this period a new mode of cinematic narration, and a truly passionate one.
Nicht versöhnt oder Es hilft nur Gewalt, wo Gewalt herrscht (1965)
A challenging film
This is one of the most important films made in the sixties, and should be understood as an attempt to develop non-classical forms of film narrative in a politically-oriented way. The movie is based on a novel by Heinrich Boll which tells the story of a german family from 1900 to 1950, from the beginning of the XXth century to the rising of nazism and the postwar years. The plot from the novel is however condensed and disarticulated in the film, with many flashbacks, and therefore the viewer is encouraged to reconstruct the story and to fill the gaps. This creates a fascinating atmosphere and conveys the main message from Straub: that Germany, in the sixties, was still haunted by the specter of nazism, and in that sense German people were "not reconciled" yet.
If you are not used to art movies, this film will be a difficult one, but you should keep in mind that this movie is closer to a painting by Picasso than to a TV series. If you don´t like this kind of movies, don´t watch this one, and if you watch it by mistake, don´t send silly comments to IMDB:
