Carnival of Souls (1962)
$30,000 influencer masterpiece
Do you like Walking Dead? The Conjuring Universe? Night of The Living Dead? I've seen this movie maybe a hundred times. I watch it every month for years now. If it never existed, zombies may not be how we see them now (this movie influenced the release of night of the living dead and the use of egg whites for makeup...of course all the others followed). If it never existed we may not have the physical/solid ghosts we see in movies such as Insidious.
This is a very special movie. It is simple, short, low budget, and a story which could have been developed more, but there is something peculiar that sucks you in.
The feeling Mary Henry has when she sees the Saltair pavilion is the same feeling I have when watching this film - calm, a calling. Allure.
Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
Judy needs friends, but not Annabelle!
This movie is the 3rd in the Annabelle series and the takes place in the same timeline as the original Conjuring movie (we learn this in the opening scene). This is a movie about Annabelle but it is also about Judy, the Warrens daughter. The concept being,"what would it be like to be Judy, the child of the Warrens who lives in the house with the artifacts room." As we learned in the trailer, it is important to never touch anything in this room.
I enjoyed the movie. Good acting. Lots of creepy scenes. But my favorite part was very trivial - the grocery store! They did very well at stocking the shelves of products with old labels. It felt very authentic to the late 70s. Same with the house and decor, they paid great attention to the details. If you enjoy fog, you will enjoy this movie. I would give it an award for great use of fog in a very Salem's Lot kind of way.
Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
The movie that could have been a masterpiece...
...but fell short. Way short.
The first problem with this sequel is that Michael Myers is nowhere to be found. I understand the direction, they were continuing with the theme of Halloween but wanted to do something different. This movie contains one of my favorite horror stories which is about half of this movie. I found the part of the movie about the masks to be super original and super creepy I just wish the whole movie would've been about them and not about a strange town with a curfew and other details that seemed very detached. This movie could have been something very special if they would have just presented the one storyline about the masks and it would've been amazing if Rob Zombie would have continued and remade this movie as well.
Halloween II (1981)
A great sequel
This sequel stands up very well and continues the story where part one ends. Often with movie sequels, they falter and fail. You can easily watch one and two back to back and enjoy the story with an easy flow. Note that this movie does have two different endings. If you are a Halloween fan you want to get your hands on both endings and decide which one you like better.
Halloween (1978)
The best horror movie ever made
40 years have passed and it's easy to underestimate the beauty, importance, influence, art, cinematography, originality, and impact of this film. If you take this film and watch it side-by-side with any other horror film from the 1970s, they just don't even compare. Halloween is something very special. I've always loved this movie but it was not until a year ago that I realized that it is truly the best horror movie ever made.
