The Little Mermaid (2023)
Give it a go!
Well I must start by saying that I'm a huge The Little Mermaid fan. I've watched the VHS hundreds of times when I was a kid. So I made an effort to go watch this in theaters last night with an open mind. I was a bit sad at the beginning because we do not get the chance to explore the merpeople's kingdom. There was no golden castle at the bottom of the ocean. Rocks, caves, and a few seconds of mermaids dancing and going about their lives was all we've got. I was a bit disappointed to realize that THAT was the introduction to a movie that ended up to be super sweet and immersive. All characters were on point, however king Triton could have been played by anyone else. I was not mesmerized by Melissa Mcarthy's performance, I thought it was ok. Now, Halle Bailey and Jonah both were perfectly casted for this film. I'm truly proud of both for pulling this out so well. The movie pays respect to the original and the new additions were much needed. However, two of the three songs I didn't care for: wild uncharted waters and scuttlebutt. One felt too long and the other was an out of the blue rap sung by Awkwafina and Daveed Digs. The only thing that annoyed the hell out of me was the last two minutes of this film. As we all know, King Triton comes to the surface to say goodbye to Ariel and, oh my god, I kid you not, the water on his waist was poorly executed. I don't understand how could Disney approve the visuals for this crucial moment of the story. At its core The Little Mermaid is about the love between father and daughter, and learning how to let go. How could the CGI be more than acceptable throughout the entire movie and then, in this iconic scene, was completely discarded? King Triton also looks at Ariel for 5 seconds too long, with absolutely no expression on his face besides 'I'm so cold out here, please someone yell CUT'. The final words between both father and daughter were there, and it was very emotional, but those little details messed it up for me at the end. Unfortunately I left the theater thinking 'oh, so close'. But again, it was a very important scene to me, maybe it won't bother you. Give it a chance and have fun! I certainly did.
Peter Pan & Wendy (2023)
Left me feeling absolutely nothing
Let me just say I loved the beginning of this film. The siblings room was very well decorated and felt cozy all around. Then, as we all know, Peter Pan takes flight along with Wendy and her brothers. The flight sequence was amazing. The song, the gloomy city below, the body movements and the well known 'goodbye Nana' gave me a nostalgic feeling and brought me to tears. Then I quickly started to suspect that this movie had flaws. At the end of the flight sequence, Peter and the kids somehow go through Big Ben's tower and it doesn't show us exactly how they did that. Magic? Well, if it's magic, show us. We're here for it. It's PETER PAN. I mean, bathe me in pixie dust, don't leave me in the dark. Don't cut the sequence of the kids flying right towards the giant clock and then come out on the other side like nothing happened. Similar thing happened later on: Peter Pan gets upset with Wendy and decides to take flight up the stairs. And that sequence is quickly interrupted by a very loud sound. I thought someone shot Peter Pan, but the director clearly felt the need to make one of the lost boys say 'we all know it's bad when Peter starts slamming doors'. Slamming doors?! So one second he was flying far away up the stairs and suddenly we hear a loud BANG and they wouldn't bother to show us? The image simply cuts to one of the kids, for the sole purpose of letting us know that he, in fact, slammed a door. AND here comes the worst of the worst: Peter Pan got injured and the princess tries to help him recover BY TAKING CARE OF THE WOUND ON TOP OF HIS CLOTHES? I mean, open his shirt to treat the wound properly. Insane. In the end, I couldn't care less.
White Noise (2022)
Still one hour to go and I'm struggling to stay focused
I absolutely hate when a movie makes me feel dumb. Am I missing something? Am I crazy for not being invested in the characters? Do I have enough patience to follow these non stopping constantly interrupted non sensical dialogs? Wait, maybe I am stupid. Am I stupid? Well, I guess I am.
The movie looks amazing, to be honest. Has hints of Spielberg all over. However, the dialogs are so thought out, and consequently made me feel like non of it was real. I didn't care about any of the characters. And no matter what the plot is, if you feel like none of it is real, the movie will never work.
I'm extremely disappointed.
Barbarian (2022)
Don't get excited
I don't understand all the hype around this movie, seriously. I have to agree with a previous review on here that said something like 'the first 40min or so are enjoyable, the rest is non sense'. It's nonsense but not in a good way. I was left with so many questions. The marketing for this movie is close to none, and I thought it was for a good reason. Well, it is not. It's a simple film, with a simple premise, simple shots and simple special effects. I enjoyed the first half, but then it became super generic. I though there would be something more terrifying underground. People kept saying there were multiple gory scenes in this movie and it was all so gruesome - grow the f up, there are 3 bloody scenes if not less. I'm so disappointed. Go watch the latest version of evil dead or the cabin in the woods instead. Those are real horror treats.
Snowflake Mountain (2022)
Thought it was going to be chaotic
This series starts with lots of promises. Montages of their suffering, cursing, drama, crying, missing their families and daily routines... but in the end, it was all so easy. Don't waste your time.
Fire Island (2022)
What was the point of it all?
I seriously wanted the movie to be over. The main character was extremely annoying. All you see is underwear, drugs, lame parties, boring conversations and TEDIOUS life realizations. This movie had so much potential. A group of friends in Fire Island? Let's put everyone to sleep! Urgh.
Things Heard & Seen (2021)
Avoid this at all cost
The movie left me so frustrated by the end. It's a big pile of absolutely nothing. She has issues but we never really get to understand them, their kid is only there just to fill an unnecessary gap, the ending doesn't bring any closure or explanation, the special effects are just a few but awful, too many characters, etc. How can people in a room full of opinions give it green light for this movie to happen? Again, it's a big pile of NOTHING. Don't waste your time.
Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry (2021)
What an experience
My god. I'm going to sum it up just by saying: damn.
All the feels guaranteed.
What a masterpiece.
Wasn't expecting it to be so complex and detailed. You can feel Billie's essence a mile away.
So glad I stayed up late to witness the rise of one of the best documentaries ever made. Point blank period.
Thank you Billie.
