Shingeki no Kyojin: Hero (2019)
The most visceral portrayal of humanity
While this series already does it better than any other, one episode, 'Hero', exemplifies how profoundly Attack on Titan portrays the deepest, most intrinsically human of emotions. How the faintest glimmer of hope can drive hordes of men and women into an enemy of colossal proportions. How they will stubbornly carry on even as their comrades inevitably fall around them.
As Levi's bloodied face tilts up towards his adversaries, ten times his size, and outnumbering him, Hiroshi Kamiya delivers his lines with visceral conviction as he swears to kill the man who robbed humanity of their freedom. In that moment, he is the literal embodiment of mankind's determination.
The soundtrack, animation and direction all harmonise to deliver these emotions in a manner more bold and impactful than ever seen before on television. Just for this episode, Hiroyuki Sawano composes yet another epic masterpiece to add to his beloved soundtrack, and it is timed to perfection. As for the animation, the attention to detail is guaranteed to have you rewatching scenes over and over again after the episode finishes, especially *that* fight.
The episode depicts two dire situations, either side of a 50-metre-high wall. Neither squad knows if the other is even alive, but, as humanity's last hope, they must push on. When things take a turn for the worse, survival must take priority over victory. But even that seems impossible, unless a Hero can emerge with a plan... and a sacrifice.
Entertainment has never been quite as spectacular as this. A landmark moment in a must-watch series.
