Plenty to like

Warning: Spoilers
*Force Awakens spoiler below*

Held off for a long time before finally going to see this. Probably swayed by some of the negative user reviews. A friend told me it was good and I agree with that now. The opening is really cool, and it keeps up a breakneck pace for a long long time. The heist on the snow train has some spectacular action and visuals. The music borrows a lot of the great John Williams themes, and has it's own confident orchestration by a would be heir to that throne. Some people complain about the lead actor. Okay so he might not look like young Harrison Ford, but he's still very good, and does everything he's asked to do really well. The supporting cast are all great too. I would have liked an imperial / alien villain and less of a "human" one, but that's okay. Honestly if you couldn't find stuff to like in this movie then something's up. Great visuals, alien creatures, action, music, and good rapport between the cast all adds up to an enjoyable two hours of escapism. They should never have killed off Han Solo in Force Awakens. That was a waste. This was very enjoyable and Ron Howard did a brilliant job. Give it a shot.

Allied (2016)

Gorgeous film-making
2 June 2018
A very enjoyable film with beautiful cinematography and excellent performances. The overall production values are excellent, as you might expect from the headline talent. The story poses a unique premise and keeps you hooked until everything is revealed in the end.

In an age where special effects have taken over, it's refreshing to watch a film that mainly cares about characters and complex human situations. Yet for anyone wanting to see war action, you'll get plenty of that as well.

The stars themselves and the costumes all look stunning. Yes almost too stunning at times, but it's so glorious to look at you can forgive the film-makers for that. Some ridiculous negative reviews prevented me from seeing this in theatres, which I now regret. Tosh from Marvel keeps scoring high on RT, but then you see it and it's complete garbage about crystals (every movie, seriously). Films like Allied deserve more serious attention.

Overall, well worth a look!

Quality production
2 January 2016
Excellent cinematography and great cast elevate this well above the usual fair. The performances are strong throughout and Tom Hopper is a great leading man in the style of Chris Hemsworth. Overall a very good adventure movie directed with great flair by Claudio Fah. Looks like a much bigger budget than it was. Fight scenes handled with confidence. The production values were consistently high class, with notable scenes in forests, caves and swamps all looking suitably authentic and not remotely TV standard like so many other things. Comparisons to the TV show seem unfair as this stands on its own merits as a story. The TV show often feels padded and stretched whereas this moves at a good pace and doesn't outstay its welcome.
