Badhaai Do (2022)
Romcom with a
Although this Drama with a message is not the first in line in Bollywood's bucket within the category of its own, but this is arguably the first LGBT themed movie with a serious notation tagged alongside which depicts mature situational senses of the director about LGBT people's quotidian life. The director Harshvardhan Kulkarni has carried out a good job overall but also slipped over on the way by going overboard in some of the scenes which can only be termed as Bollywood-like-reality. Barring that, the film has comedy and seriousness interweaved in a real story, that surpasses the directional errs which were seen previously in the Bollywood Romcom Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhan which was good yet not so fulfilling. That is how Bollywood has matured over the years.
This 2-hour 27-minute journey also has musical melodies in store which will linger in mind as post enjoyment or aftertaste of the movie. This movie will initiate new conversation within families, that didn't take place till now.
The biggest political achievement of this movie is the portrayal of how weak the basis of our current legal system for adoption is. According to the current law, Shardul or Sumi is not legally allowed adopt a kid as homosexual couples but if they are in a "fake straight marriage", they may do so, because the law allows them to do that. So, by not deciding to take the divorce they are actually participating in a void marriage and the pre-requites of the adoption law indirectly demands the couple to maintain a marriage which the couple didn't want in the first place. Whether this should be the basis of our legal system is left for argument by lawmen. Our haggard politicians will anyway feel challenged to grasp the inner subtleties of this but let's hope for the best for coming generation.
Tandav (2021)
Awesome cinematography a but weak story line
Acting = 9/10
Cinematography = 10/10
Location = 10/10
Costume =10/10
Storyline =8/10
Direction = 9/10
Music = 10/10
Script = 8/10
With that I will stay tuned and review the story line after season 2 is released. It reflects the current political situation of India perfectly, that is why some people are hurt. That's ok. Let's wait for the 2nd season.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2020)
Start of a new genre in Bollywood
The movie is no doubt very fast paced with lot of comedy and does not leave a moment for the audience to be judgmental about homosexuality. The direction could have been much better and the scenarios much mature.
This movie is definitely a movie which was needed for the Indian audience in order to start talking about homosexuality. This is a conversation starter for those who are having vague ideas or a rather pejorative view of homosexuality. Not the first one in the category though, it has brought in the topic of homosexuality for the common people with a popular mainstream comedy. Most of the so called gay themed movies in Bollywood so far had a rather bleak picture of homosexuality. Examples are many including I am, Bombay Boys, My brother Nikhil, Bombay Talkies, Aligarh, Loev(Netflix), Sisak (short film). Dostana from 2008 made a mockery of the topic. But this one has shown gay love with a hint on how it could be even celebrated. This was needed because the gay community, in spite of their social issues thrive among themselves. The love between two individuals can be seen as love between two individuals and not which gender they possess.
Ayushman Khurana has excelled at his character as did his counter hero as a newcomer. The good old Nina Gupta has played her role with her old cinematic prowess. Nonetheless it might a bit confusing for many international viewers to understand even what is happening other than the homosexual part, because many scenarios involve very intrinsic Indian social values an customs.
This is a good starter for a new genre in Bollywood and hopefully induce thinking among the future directors for incorporating gay characters. It will teach them another way of portraying gays in mainstream movies. With that all I would give it 8 stars.
Snowpiercer (2013)
Dystopian depiction of Climate Change
This film in the beginning bored me a bit for about 20 minutes but then I realised that it was actually depicting a dystopia in the post climate change era. The depiction itself is cool even with bad cinematography. It is rather theatrical when it comes to cinematography and not pertaining to films of modern Hollywood. They could have shown the outside of the train more vividly than using a video games like graphics. For me it muddled the whole idea of the futuristic train set in 2031. I must say graphics is pretty bad. So bad, that it feels like video games screen !!
The train's driving force seems to be perpetual motion machine which is according to today's physics, a mathematical impossibility. So the director should have researched his physics knowledge properly before depicting such a thing. The futuristic train could have been powered by many other sources of energy which are feasible with physics. When one goes beyond the boundary of physics, it belongs to the category of fantasy fiction. But this film is not a fantasy fiction. It's a physically possible dystopia.
The film describes the economy of a closed ecological system like earth itself, which is nice. It also shows how the class system evolves in our society and that it remains the same in whatever world scenario we belong to. Humans will fall prey to these things
Social Economics
Greed for power
Greed to control everything
Run behind an illusory la dolce vita
Hunger for sex
These are the driving forces of our world today and will remain so.
A VERY VERY important aspect of this film is the last scene which shows a polar bear moving around in nature when the whole world is covered is going through an ice age. This symbolises the fact that humans with all their wit and intellect have developed a very complex society but have not been able to tackle nature. On the other hand, those who have been with nature (the polar bear) need no special and closed ecological system to survive. If we humans come out of our greeds and evolved with nature we would not see this dystopian future. Be natural and be with nature. Nature will protect you.
I would give it a 7 because of good idea depicted with bad cinematography.
Little Things (2016)
Mature Indian drama
In a single phrase this series is a reflection of a mature Indian relationship. The word indian is quintessential here.
This drama portraits the ups and downs of a relationship between a couple in their 20s in the very indian context. This may not be very understandable to the international viewers but worth giving a try if someone wants to understand indian culture and society.
The situations shown in the series, are very quotidian but also thought provoking for the common viewers. We take many things for granted in our day to day life but at a more subtle level these taken-for-granted scenarios may not be as normal to the person who is also going through same the scenario.
Overall it is recommended also for the parents who have their kids in their 20s.
Loev (2015)
Brave movie for Indian market
A very brave movie for the indian market. Well made and the storyline is also nice. It Represents the queer culture of the current day India.
The movie also investigates into the not so well known queer relationships and polyamory. Cinematography is also good. At some points the direction may appear weak but would be almost invisible for the casual viewer.
Evening Shadows (2018)
Not yet a full fledged movie
I can say that the direction of the movie is immature and the story is very obvious. Cinematography is good but acting is very weak. At some points in the movie it appears as if the director is in a hurry and wants to finish a scene without allowing due time to culminate the situation of the story into a mature episode.
Although the ending was much better in terms of acting performance. I would not recommend it to film loving friends.
Dedh Ishqiya (2014)
Had to leave after 66 minutes
I could not handle the torture of this movie and had to leave it after 66 minutes.
