Prom Night (1980)
This is A How You Build a Mystery
Beautiful people.
Great acting (at least for the time).
Competent writing.
Great direction and misdirection.
Interesting story.
Plot that continues to build and surprise.
A killer whose identity is a great mystery due to their ambiguity and a great selection of red herrings.
A final girl who is "pure" but very sassy, opinionated and tough.
And the reveal of the killer and motive was surprising.
Pretty good movie overall but wouldn't call it a slasher though. Just a good mystery.
Cheerleader Massacre (2003)
Um . . . Hmmm . . .
OK. Where do I begin? Hawaiian Punch concentrate for blood? Really? An obvious pellet gun as a 9mm? A 5-girl cheerleader squad? And only two of them appear to have ever cheered, ever.
A script and directing so none-existent that you beg for everyone to die just so that the movie can be over because you paid for the movie as opposed to just renting it so it would be wasteful to just turn it off and burn it.
I movie so terrible that Charles Barkley would scream, "It's tuuuurible!" But at least there were boobs at three different scenes in the movie. And the deleted scenes, which were from a different film by the way, had more boobs.
Beneath Still Waters (2005)
Hmmm. . . Why Only 1 Star? Read to find out.
It was a terrible friggin movie. Not sure where to begin. The box makes it seem like a horror movie that takes place by the beach or something. But nope, it's a lake. A small lake. No scary moments. No scares. No jumps. No acting. No monster/killer. Just terrible acting, terrible directing and worse story. Stay away.
And because I have to have 10 lines of dialogue, I'm going to talk about a movie I did like that had a beach and a lake. It's called Lake Placid. And it was awesome.
Another horror flick with a lake or beach that I liked was any of the Friday the 13th films.
Uncut (2011)
saw it at the premiere
DAMN!!! A roller coaster ride from one second to the next. It's a little "24", a little "Prison Break", a little "Sopranos" and a touch of "CSI." After they showed the first three episodes, I had all kinds of questions. Wish the episodes were longer than 5 or 6 minutes though - hey, maybe they'll get a TV deal and get an hour long slot somewhere! The story centers around the murder of this hooker who is connected to three different other stories. And at the center of each story is a mystery which her murder helps unfold. And the cool thing is I can already see how huge the BIG mystery is.
I can say that I honestly recommend it. Well worth the time we spent, though I wish they were longer episodes. Let's hope this web series gets to TV!
A Dream of Flight (2005)
Oh My F***ing God!
Allow me to repeat myself . . . OH MY F***ING GOD!!! I don't cry at movies and I really didn't cry at this one either, but my girlfriend soaked my freaking sleeve! Tugging at my girl's heart-strings like that was hard to watch.
The previous user gave you the synopsis, so I won't go into repeating it, but damn . . .
If this is what it takes to learn to love again, I don't want to ever find out about love at all. He made love seem like the most wonderful, beautiful, amazingly detrimental thing on this planet. It was wonderful and dangerous, beautiful and horrible.
And yes, there was so little dialogue. He played everything from the characters' eyes and expressions and . . . it just felt so genuine and heartfelt.
I think the poster before me kept saying AMAZING!!! and stuff like that. All I can say is he took the words right out of my mouth. And AMAZING is still not enough to describe this filmmaker's work. I think his name is Joston or something, like the high school ring company. He kept making that joke. Stupid joke. Amazing f***ing movie.
Keep up the good work.
