Doppelganger (1993)

Worst film I have seen in years
23 January 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I was interested in the topic, and only fans of Drew Barrymore's dancing on David Letterman's desk will find anything remotely interesting in it. OK, she shows some breast (or maybe a body double does). The plot is slashed to bits and the acting is horrible. Neither lead has any material to work with, as the direction of the film leads nowhere. Don't waste your time. See Donnie Darko instead if you want a creepy Drew Barrymore film, and if you want to see another, skip this and see Darko again.

The treatment of the Doppelganger legend is absolutely criminal as well. Refer to Charles Williams' novel "Descent Into Hell" for something worth considering instead. This is just an excuse to make a B film to go straight to video and suck some life out of people at Blockbuster.

What makes any of these people think the acting here was praiseworthy? Give me a break.

Racist Elements enter the Fliescher World but there's fun too
24 May 2002
This cartoon gets started on the wrong foot by turning a Black man White. A good enough pun for a cartoon world at the time, this out of the Inkwell series Koko effort is not intentionally racist, but men usually aren't. It is a sad revelation of what would be funny in the 1920's but the effect continues with pretty good effect through out the cartoon. The chemical that turns the black man white makes for good fodder for better natured fun in the cartoon world. Mainly worth seeking out for the opening scene though, as a piece of cultural history. If you are looking for a great Ko-Ko cartoon, there are better ones out there.

What a TRIP!!! Makes your head spin!
19 April 2002
Reminds me of René Clair's surrealist short The Crazy Ray (a.k.a. Paris qui dort) which predates this by a few years. It uses the live action shots that the Fliescher's were known for extremely well, probably because they go beyond the simple inkwell creation/creator gag. Worth a look!

The "inspiration" for Mickey in Fantasia
7 March 2002
This one has it all, the apprentice, the multiplying brooms, the buckets of water, everything that the Fantasia sequence has. I don't know that it is credited in Fantasia, but it should be.

The multiplying booms are quite something. Overall it works quite well. Reminds me of Der Golem a little.

The Most Horrific Film I've Ever Seen
5 April 2001
I'll keep it simple. This is a portrayal of one of the cutest children in all of Disney as he is educated to hate and death by Nazi propaganda. Effectively bone chilling, this hateful cartoon served its purpose to motivate Americans to consider their moral superiority gleaned from a free education system.

The Very First Porky Pig Cartoon
1 March 2001
Mr. Freling comes up with the ultimate classroom stutterer in this Merrie Melodies cartoon. It begins with an elementary age Porky reciting "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" in front of an audience. Other characters strut their stuff too, but I only recognise Porky.
