Captain Ron (1992)
Just a Little Squall
It amuses me to read comments about how bad this film is. Who would ever take this film seriously in the first place?
It's an extremely funny movie, with a great cast. Captain Ron is a con, who takes a hapless man's family under his wing. It's not an uncommon narrative stategy: in essence, it's "What About Bob Goes to Sea."
It's great to see Kurt Russell in a comedic role. Martin Short and Mary Kay Place are fabulous, as are Meadow Sisto and the kid who plays her little brother, who plays Monopoly for real money with Captain Ron, and later with the terrorist boatjackers.
This movie is pure fun. It comes up often on basic cable channels. If you haven't seen it, get ready for some involuntary gut laughs.

Motorama (1991)
Mythic
This is a great, dark, offbeat little film, a modern day adaptation of the quest for the Holy Grail myth. It's a sleeper if there ever was one. I saw it on cable some years ago and taped it. I've loaned it to many of my friends and everyone loved it.
After Hours (1985)
Kafkaesqe
Griffin Dunn's plight to get back to his home after his pursuit of a girl is frustrated at every turn, not unlike the character in Kafka's "The Castle." The plot is similar to another film by the same screenwriter, "Motorama." Dunn's "progress" in his journey embraces, like "Motorama" the "quest" myth.
