Sex Education: Episode 7 (2020)
I don't usually write reviews on here but..
This one deserves it. Amidst all the wanking and sexual intercourse in the show, what it does best is at full effect here. I especially love how this episode is able to balance so many storylines at once, and still manages to be a relatively cohesive story.
The acting was great in this episode, especially by Gillian Anderson. Her acting after her conversation with Jakob absolutely hit me on a level I didnt think I had.
What makes this episode so great, however, is not Otis. The best part of the episode isn't Otis' storyline, but rather all of the prominent girls in the show. They get put in detention by Ms. Sands because of slander written about her. They all fight at first in what you would expect, but what really caught me by surprise was how the show treated its female characters with great sensitivity and empowered them without coming across like virtue signalling. I especially loved how Amy's character got the spotlight again, and how she overcame (pun intended) her trauma with them together. Its sex education without the educating by Otis, but rather by the girls discovering what they all have in common.
Storylines are furthered, revelations are found, peaks are achieved, and this episode could perhaps be among some of the very best on netflix, if not on all teenage television. I also really appreciated how the conflict between Jackson and his mums was handled, as I felt they never really got their proper moment to shine until now. It was nice to see one of his mums being accepting of him joining the school play. It really flips the jock archetype on its head.
Also Adam is Adam in this episode, but I won't say why.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Revival (2012)
"At last I shall have my revenge"
Maul is a legitimate threat both as a villain and as a rival to Kenobi. Him and Savage make for an excellent Sith crime pair, which, at the time of this episode's airing, was not common. I also remember watching Revenge, the finale of season 4, live on television thinking how sick Darth Maul's return was, and this season 5 opener does not waste a beat.
Why its not rated a 10 is because it is not chronologically the first episode of season 5. Events in the youngling arc were mentioned, which may confuse those that watched this episode first. Also couldn't they have just had a stealthy pirate follow Maul and Savage as they chase Kenobi and just shoot at them. I mean that would make for a boring episode so I sorta get it.
I love how the Sith lords try to manipulate the pirates into joining them, but their reconciliation with Hondo felt way too quick and they shouldve at the very least been locked up for aligning themselves with sith lords.
I felt really bad for Adi Gallia in this episode, as while her character was mostly relegated to the background, you could tell she was outmatched and got absolutely pummeled after making the kenobi-kick-to-the-knee mistake that he did on grievous, only this time it cost her life. It makes the severing of Savage's arm more satisfying and adds depth and weight to the fight as Kenobi clutches the 2v1 vs Maul.
I loved loved loved Hondo as always, and he never fails to entertain as he deals with the space jedi mumbo-jumbo, and the ending foreshadows Palpatine's plans for Maul and his little speech about Maul not being a threat was interesting, considering that he made the speech just so he could isolate Maul as his only prime target. I also like that there was little plot armor, for both heroes and villains.
Great episode.
