Chernobyl (2019)
10/10
Masterpiece

This might be the best show of any kind that I've ever seen on television. It has everything including drama, history, heroes, villains, incompetence, politics, science, corruption, life and death. The scenes are remarkably realistic in look and feel...worthy of a high budget Hollywood blockbuster. I generally follow news items very closely, but I knew almost nothing about the Chernobyl tragedy except that it was, at the time, the worst nuclear accident in history. I guess that it probably still is.

So far, I've watched the full series three times and each time it got better than the time before.

Warning: Spoilers
This is an all-time great movie. The story, performances, and visuals are all as good as it gets. It's difficult to overstate how good the performances are by Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Junior, Emily Blunt and Matt Damon. Christopher Nolan does a masterful job of telling the full story. The three hour running time seemed to fly by.

I also loved the alternating time line between the pre-bomb development and the post-war witch hunt which was very effective at building suspense and drama. I saw it a second time in the theatre and thought even more of it after the second viewing. There are so many subtle references and lines that it's almost impossible to catch them all the first time around. This is one of the best movies ever made.

Great Story. Great Movie.

I really loved this movie. The "single take" appearance adds significantly to the drama, realism, and emotions of the movie. The visuals are outstanding and the two main actors are fabulous. There are several big names that are in the movie with very limited screen time which also adds to the overall impact of the movie. The Wayfaring Stranger song is basically perfect.

Best Music Movie To Date

I loved Bohemian Rhapsody and I loved Rocket Man. This movie is better than either of them. A must see.

Alarmingly Bad

Warning: Spoilers
I generally like slow burn psychological dramas which this movie is supposed to be. Holy mother of God is this a bad movie. They try to get you emotionally involved in the father-son drama but have one preposterous plot line after another.

In order to get to Mars you have fly to the light side of the moon and then drive a car to the dark side of the moon where you are attacked by moon pirates. Moon pirates?

On the way to Mars, you stop to answer a distress call, kind of like stopping to help someone with a flat tire. Of course you easily enter the distressed ship from the outside. And when you enter you are attacked by a rabid Rafiki from Lion King.

Once on Mars, you are able to sneak into the rocket to Neptune even though you were standing on the ground under the rocket engines when the count down was at 10. And, for some reason, you had to swim underwater in a space suit quite a ways to get to the rocket.

When you get to Neptune, you park your rocket, and I mean park, on the opposite side of the rings so you have to go through the rings on the way down to loony pops and come back through the rings with a makeshift shield that you removed from the outside of the spacecraft with no tools while wearing a spacesuit.

To get back home from Neptune to Earth you are propelled the whole way by the nuclear bomb that you used to destroy loony pops' ship. The ship that was, by the way, somehow destroying the known universe.

The moral of all of this is that we may be alone in the universe so we should all love each other.

The End.
