Maleficent (2014)

Enchanting + Timeless Masterpiece
2 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was SO good. SO stylish. SO eerie. SO haunting. SO mesmerizing/magical. SO ENCHANTING!!!! The atmosphere created by the wonderful music and excellent cinematography really had a timeless feel about it. Almost as if the Angelina Jolie version of that character had always existed from the very beginning. And that's really what the entire movie was hinged on. She WAS Maleficent in every possible way.

Angelina Jolie was amazing. It was a flawless performance. Every sound she made, even the slightest utterance was perfect. Her movements and facial expressions were absolutely stunning.

My favorite thing about movies is being able to escape into another world. And this movie did a great job at making me feel like that. It was the perfect blend of old and modern. Timeless is really the best way to describe it. It felt nostalgic while at the same time fresh. I felt like I did when I was a kid going to Disneyland for the first time. Some might complain that the movie was a little too "Disneyland"; and while it's true that at times during the movie I felt like the scene I just experienced with the visuals & music would be perfect in a new Disneyland ride/world, that doesn't bother me. Disneyland isn't all Dumbo rides and Mickey Mouse. Some of my fondest memories of Disneyland are the darker and more haunting aspects. This fit right in with those feeling.

All the performances in the movie were spot on. Elle Fanning was completely adorable and innocent as Aurora. Manville, Staunton & Temple were great as the three fairies. Riley delivered the perfect blend of humor & wit with dark undertones as Diaval. And I thought Copley was a great Stefan.

I really only have one slight complaint. And it's not even for me. I don't know if anyone else has ever felt this before, but sometimes I don't wish something for myself, but simply because I think it would have made it easier for others to enjoy the movie. So, for the sake of others who needed it, I wish the movie had a little more scenes with Maleficent & Stefan early on in the movie. More screen time showing their relationship blossom and more obvious character development and screen time overall of Stefan would probably have enhanced the emotional connection for most of the audience during the emotional scenes throughout the movie.

And maybe these scenes will be included in the director's cut.

However, for myself, I thought the movie was perfect. But I'm a little different. I prefer subtle over obvious. I love character development, but at times less is more. When there is a narrator, like there was for this movie, sometimes a simple line by the narrator can tell the audience just as much as a 5 minute scene. I understand the reason why the director chose to keep the movie tight. This was the story told in the viewpoint and perspective of Maleficent. Plain and simple. This was HER story. We were told just enough of what we needed to know about the other characters, their motivations, etc... in order to form an emotional connection while at the same time always completely focused on Maleficent.

Would I have been disappointed with an additional 10 minutes of back story involving Stefan? No. But I understand the benefit of keeping the movie shorter/tighter. The one thing no one can complain about is that the movie lost its focus. It was extremely tight. Some might say too tight. But I enjoyed it. I was completely sucked into her story. Less of everyone else allowed for more of Angelina Jolie's portrayal of that amazing, complex, multi-faceted and enchanting character of Maleficent.

This really was one of the most enchanting movies I've ever scene. I loved every single moment. The music was engrossing and the visuals haunting. I give it a 10/10. I think those who wished there was additional writing regarding character development have completely valid desires. However, I hope that in time the movie will be appreciated for what it is.

Inception (2010)

Inception: Incredible Intensity Igniting Inspiring Impactful Instant Movie Classic!
24 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Every now and then a movie comes along that is so far superior to the average film it takes your breath away and reminds you why you love movies. Inception does that and more.

Not since The Matrix (1999) has a movie exploded onto the scene like Inception leaving an awed audience in absolute chills having witnessed something so fresh, so unique, so thought-provoking and deep that the experience lasts long after the credits roll. It's more than a movie. It's artistic expression at its finest blending beautiful imagery, powerful music, relentless intensity, riveting plot, mesmerizing ideas and heart wrenching emotions, all while captivating an imagination in a fresh and unique way.

There are aspects of this movie that simply have not been attempted before. There are images and visuals that before existed only inside ones imagination or dreams. There are spellbinding manipulations of the space time continuum altering preconceived notions of reality.

Without any spoilers I will say that the primary vehicle for the plot encompasses the mysterious world of dreams. Specifically the notion of extracting or implanting information or ideas within ones dream. The way in which this topic is approached is highly intriguing in and of itself. But there is so much more to this movie than just dreams.

This is a story about guilt, love, redemption, letting go, contentment, curiosity, creativity, acceptance, desires, choices, consequences, priorities and approval. The role children play in our lives and the enormous responsibility and influence we have in theirs was a particularly meaningful theme of the film for me. There are some very touching scenes that will certainly stay with you long after the movie.

However, what's so refreshing is the manner in which this story is told. We are provided with the least amount of information necessary in order to follow along and be emotionally invested. Some might find this creates confusion and unanswered questions. I find it creates a crisp, intelligent and thought-inspiring story without falling prey to the annoying and all too common practice of over-explanation found in most movies today. I don't need or want every little thing explained to me over and over again. This is a movie that demands multiple viewings. Some things are left up to interpretation, but many of the so-called unanswered questions will be answered by watching it a second time. At least that was my experience.

I also really like how the movie doesn't try to be noble or grand. No one is trying to save the world or conquer an evil enemy. It's a basic plot, but it's just told on a grand scale in a very entertaining and unique way. The primary motivations of both the protagonist and the person that hires him to do a job that makes up the bulk of the storyline is very simple and relatable. One is trying to overcome an obstacle to get home and the other is trying to advance his own power and influence. But neither is presented as either good or bad. As an audience we don't know if the results that occur if the mission succeeds will have a positive or negative impact on the world. We are simply told what is necessary and important. We can fill in the rest as we see fit. And how each individual viewer chooses to see the movie will largely be influenced by their own personal biases and their "projections" used to fill in the blanks. Those that have seen the movie just caught my intentional use of the word "projections" and can probably guess where I'm heading next.

This leads me to the true brilliance of the movie. Inception isn't just occurring in the movie, it's occurring to the audience. We become part of the subject matter. Those that have seen the end of the movie know what I'm referring to. I won't go into any detail, but I will say this. A single idea in the human mind is a very powerful thing. Keep that in mind, not while watching the movie, but afterwards while analyzing it. You might be surprised what you discover.

I'll end by saying that Christopher Nolan is fast becoming the greatest director of his generation. Dark Knight is the pinnacle of the superhero genre. I thought that would be Nolan's masterpiece. I was wrong. Inception is his greatest masterpiece to date. Nolan has skyrocketed into my Top 10 all-time favorite directors.

And Leonardo DiCaprio is fast becoming one of the most accomplished actors of any generation. At age 35 he has already squeezed in a lifetime worth of quality films working with the top directors in the industry. And I think he hasn't even hit his peak yet. In another 35 years don't be surprised if he's widely considered to be on the short list of greatest actors ever. Not bad for the little trouble-maker punk kid on Growing Pains.

And I certainly can't forget the amazing musical score by composer Hans Zimmer. The music in this movie is absolutely one of the characters. It's engrossing and completely elevates the entire experience. It's beautiful. Right now I can't think of a better movie score. And I'm a movie score connoisseur. Like the movie itself, you will not be able to get the music out of your head.

Finally, allow me to take this opportunity to announce that there is a new #1 on the very top of my all-time favorite movies. I never thought Braveheart could be eclipsed. But I never imagined a movie like Inception. Since I've seen the movie multiple times I don't feel this is simply a reactionary decision. I've put a lot of thought into it. Anyone that knows me knows that I take my "favories" of anything very seriously.

Do yourself a favor and go see my all-time favorite movie INCEPTION.

Great Sequel
3 June 2003
This was a great movie, and it was perfect for the middle movie of a trilogy. It had plenty of action, added some fun new characters, and definitely left you wanting to know how it will all end. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I loved the special effects, but the most fun for me was the extremely interesting and complex dialogue between the characters. I have no idea how the next one will end, but I think it is a good sign when the middle movie of a trilogy leaves you with tons of questions. I think Matrix Reloaded was fun and exciting entertainment. Well worth the price of admission!

The movie I could see over and over again!
26 August 2002
This is one of my Top Ten Favorite Movies of All-Time!

I have probably seen this movie more than any other, and I will never get sick of seeing it again.

I grew up wanting to be like Michael J. Fox, and this movie was a big reason why. He's a stud!

The attention to detail in this movie, and the sequels, is one of the reasons why it is so great. I love time-travel movies, but this is the best one by far.

Christopher Lloyd & Crispin Glover are excellent in their roles. There is so much to like about this movie. Just thinking about it makes me want to see it again. Along with Empire Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi, this is my favorite movie made in the '80's.

The Perfect Example of Why I Love Movies!
24 August 2002
Words cannot describe how much I loved this movie.

Take a moment to forget about analyzing the suspense, acting, directing, writing, editing, and entertainment this movie has to offer, and simply ask yourself if it is possible for you to be touched by a movie in an emotional or spiritual way.

If it is not possible, then feel free to go back to over-analyzing and hunched over your ego in search for so-called "holes" in movies that do not match-up with your own limited perception of reality.

But if it is possible for movies to mean more to you than mere chopping blocks for editing and plot analysis, then I would highly recommend this movie to you.

Oh, and by the way, the suspense, acting, directing, writing, editing, and pure entertainment in this movie is top notch. Combined with the message in the movie and the emotions I felt during and after the movie, "Signs" delivers the full package. It has everything. It is as close to perfection as I have seen in a movie my whole life. It is my new favorite movie of all-time!

I liken this movie to a parable. The message behind the story in a parable is much more important and focused on than whether the story is realistic. Many people choose to look at this movie and compare what happens to the way they view reality. YOU MISS THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE MOVIE IF YOU DO THAT!

The point of this movie is that you have the opportunity to watch how this particular family responds to a major crisis. It tackles the issue of possibly losing the most precious thing in the whole world...Faith!

Enjoy this movie if you can. I feel sorry for you if you cannot.

Appreciation has been well earned...I suggest we give it!!!
24 May 2002
This movie is so good on so many levels!

The new installment to the Star Wars franchise has a perfect blend of drama, action, comedy, anticipation, and satisfaction. The special effects are superb as would be expected, but I was surprised at how well the story was told. I thought the writing and the acting was great for a Star Wars movie. Let's not forget what the original three movies are like. Somehow the "Holy Trilogy" has been placed up on an untouchable pedestal by a number of closed-minded snobs who salivate at any opportunity to criticize any attempt to complement the originals.

It is very difficult to pull off a believable love story within an action-packed science fiction movie. George Lucas did a fabulous job at making that very difficult task work. I thought Natalie and Hayden did a great job. The audience is supposed to root for them, and I think their characters were very likeable, and their relationship is very endearing, considering all the other story lines that needed to share the screen time.

Movies are supposed to be fun, and Star Wars is supposed to be magical. I think is was. It is a special story from the mind of a very imaginative and creative film maker. This movie is part of that story, and it fits perfectly.

I thought Phantom Menace was a great movie because of how it set the stage for the rest of the movies. Attack of the Clones is more compelling and more visually stunning than Phantom, and I am eagerly awaiting the next one.

Those who choose to criticize this movie are too bitter to enjoy it for what it is. I feel sorry for anyone who is unable to appreciate something so magical.

A Very Nice Surprise!!
24 January 2002
I like to comment on movies that really surpass my expectations. I loved this movie! One thing I really liked about it was the style. It was compelling throughout, yet it had a nice slow and wonderfully detailed pace.

I also enjoyed the unique interaction between the two main characters. They were both extremely likeable, and the dialogue between them seemed very realistic. Their characters were believable, and that's important for me.

The movie tackled some tough issues, and it didn't end by tying a nice pretty bow around every issue. Many times I will enjoy a movie, but the end seems rushed or roughly put together. I didn't sense that in this movie. I thought the end was great.

The acting was great, the directing was great, and the music (especially the trumpet scene) was very nice. It's not the greatest movie I've ever seen, but it's rare when I can't find any faults.

Good Movie!

Stunning! - This movie took me by surprise
6 December 2001
I am so glad I was able to see this movie on the big-screen. I almost didn't because to be honest I thought the movie looked dumb when I first saw the trailer. It looked like a hokey MTV music video stretched into a 2 hour love story. Luckily, through word of mouth from friends who usually have reliable movie recommendations, I decided to give it a chance.

It isn't just a movie, it's an adventure. A wild trippy ride that takes you where no movie has ever taken you. I should have been more prepared, knowing the un-orthodox style of the director, Baz Luhrmann. However, even his previous ground-breaking style movies such as Romeo + Juliet & Strictly Ballroom gave no indication that a movie such as this was on the horizon. See it! Enjoy it! And like a fun ride at an amusement park, you will crave the experience over and over again!

Some Movies Strike Gold!
22 February 2001
Once in awhile a movie comes along that truly is special. What makes a movie special? Is it the "special" effects? Not usually. For me, I want a movie with exceptional acting, a good story, a tight screenplay, and creative directing. But, above all else I want good old fashioned wonderfully written dialogue between believable characters that I can relate to and learn from. This is what I think separates descent movies from the really special ones. This is what enables me to really submerge myself into the story. Everyone has certain movies that they can watch over and over and never get tired of. Good Will Hunting is one of those movies that I find to get better each time I watch it.

This movie is filled with fabulous stimulating dialogue between interesting, yet real-to-life characters. Matt Damon gives one of my favorite performances on film to date. He portrays Will Hunting, a genius whose tough on the outside but scared on the inside personality will keep him from finding true happiness or realizing his full potential until he is able to escape his past and learn how to trust again. Robin Williams also gives an outstanding performance as the shrink who tries to help him do that, and learns a little bit about life himself. If you just took the scenes between these two characters to make this movie it would have still been excellent. But this movie has so much more to offer. There is the relationship with Skylar, played by Minnie Driver who has everything Will has ever looked for in a girl. There are his buddies who he has grown up with his whole life, including his best friend Chuckie, played by Ben Affleck. There is Professor Lambeau, played by Stellan Skarsgard, who is one of the smartest mathematicians in the world, and yet his knowledge and ability does not even compare to young Will Hunting.

All of this adds up to one of the most entertaining and thought provoking movies out there. There are life lessons to be learned and cinematic brilliance to be enjoyed with this one. One of the best ever!

Gladiator (2000)

Edge of Your Seat Fun!
19 February 2001
Great Story! Great Writing! Great Acting! Great Directing! Great Score! This movie has it all. I especially enjoyed the mood of the film. Even though it has a lot of action, there is a subtle elegance throughout the picture that gives it great style. The movie flows effortlessly from scene to scene, while at the same time creating wonderful intensity and nail-biting excitement.

The acting in the movie more than lives up to expectations. Russell Crowe is brilliant in his role as Maximus, the "general who became a slave, who became a gladiator, who defied an emperor." Crowe's intense style is perfect for the relentless determination and confidence of Maximus. Joaquin Phoenix is equally wonderful in his role as Commodus, the corrupt emperor. He plays a great villain because he is able to give Commodus depth by showing certain vulnerable or fragile sides, while at the same time instantly transforming to let the ruthless nature of his volatile character shine. It also helps that Joaquin has the classic Caesar look that works perfectly with his role.

Connie Nielsen is also very good as Lucilla. However, perhaps the two finest performances in the movie were given by a couple of acting veterans in supporting roles. Richard Harris and Oliver Reed were exceptional in what will be remembered as crowning achievements at the end of their careers. Harris was perfect as Marcus Aurelius, the aging Caesar who reflects upon his life and contemplates how the world will remember him. And Reed, especially, gave my personal favorite performance in the movie as Proximo, the trainer for the gladiators. The way he spoke about the life of a gladiator, the splendor of Rome, and the "thrill of the Coliseum" really added excitement and anticipation during the viewing of the movie.

Gladiator is filled with many memorable moments that one would need to see more than once to fully appreciate. The excitement felt for me when Rome is first shown in all its wonder and marvel is my favorite scene. But the whole movie is a rush! Hans Zimmer provides the absolute perfect score to capture the different moods in the movie. Ridley Scott sets the perfect tone with his artistic and creative directing. I would recommend it to anyone who can stomach intensity and enjoy an epic story for the ages. Next to Braveheart, this movie is the greatest of all-time!

Braveheart (1995)

My All-Time Favorite!!
18 February 2001
Braveheart is a wonderful blend of action, romance, and drama. Mel Gibson is amazing in his portrayal of William Wallace, the Scottish hero who inspires men to fight for freedom. Although this movie does not give a very accurate description of historic events, that shouldn't make it any less enjoyable. If you want an exact description of Scottish and English history, or you tend to be critical and analyze historical accuracy in films, then this movie is not for you. However, if you want to be thoroughly entertained and inspired and feel every range of possible emotions in a 3-hour span then this movie is definitely for you. I have never before or since seen a movie that can grab hold of your emotions and keep them captive for the full length of the film like Braveheart can. I am envious of any who have not yet had the pleasure of seeing this great film because there is nothing like the first time. If you rank movies on how they make you feel, then Braveheart is simply the Greatest of All-Time!!
