SAS Rogue Heroes (2022)
Not bad if you don't take it seriously
Could have been a lot better if there was more historical accuracy. It leaves the most interesting topics unexplored. Seems to be made for an audience of teenage boys, which is a shame and cheapens the value of the series because it's never really serious. Just rock 'n roll baby.
What I didn't like:
The writing is unimaginable and predictable. You feel everything coming a mile away. The main characters are (nearly) all acting like boys. Impulsive, rash or even delusional, which nullifies the 'true events' disclaimer. There's no real complexity. The events that occur and characters are too shallow, and for this reason some great acting by the lead actors doesn't have the impact it could have.
What I did like:
Costumes, sets, and a good cast. Depictions of brotherhood towards the later episodes that go beyond 'aww yeah brother'.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Look at how they massacred my boy
Showrunner was given a completely fleshed out world, with deep characters and an epic story. Instead of trying to adapt this into a TV series, they started changing anything they didn't like.
The result is a generic fantasy with uninteresting characters, plot holes, ridiculous costumes, and an atmosphere that resembles something like 'teen wolf'.
This is what happens when you think they can do better than a writer who has hundreds of thousands of fans. Such a missed opportunity, such a waste of time, money, and good source material.. and why exactly?
This monstrosity should be balefired out of existence.
The Flemish Bandits (2018)
Could have been so much better
If it wasn't for the bad writing and inumerable tropes.
First episode was extremely promising and set the stage really well. Then the believability and historical accuracy went out the window as the pace slowed down.
The setting is great but they ruined it with satanic worship, mud covered righteous poor people vs. cartoonish evil rich people. Any character development in the series was not believable at all.
The writing just got worse and worse. It's as if they immediately ran out of inspiration, enthusiasm and time after the pilot.
Too bad because the setting and costumes were good and it could have been a great Flemish production. Some of the actors were good too.
PS: the real Jan de Lichte was a murdering, stealing scumbag who robbed and killed common people. So no Robin Hood at all.
