Long Way Up (2020)
Spectacular scenery and a real charging adventure
Unlike some other reviewers, I enjoyed the challenge and struggles to do this trip with electric vehicles. It shined a light on the current limitations but showed the true potential of this technology. As usual, the group was fun to watch together. Rarely do we get to see this much from the guys behind the cameras, but it adds to the teamwork aspect of the journey. Charlie was a mess to start, but it sure looked like he got stronger and healthier as the months went by. The travels were very cool to see up to around Colombia and then all kinds of logistical headaches occur that really took away from the purity of just a couple of dudes riding there bikes. We end up with boats, ferrys, planes, and buses. At the same time, they really rush through central America, especially 'dangerous' Mexico. I really couldn't tell what was going on with the bus except the locals that heroically bust their hump to fix it., where did the Rivians go, how much was ridden on the bikes. Anyway, it kind of fizzles out the last couple episodes. However, the South American episodes are top notch with absolutely amazing cinematography and a refreshing soundtrack. Overall, fans of the first two outings will enjoy the bulk of this series.
Gisaengchung (2019)
I'm baffled by the over the top praise.
The film is interesting, but that's about it. The first hour was really slow, the whole class thing seemed quite familiar. I'm not sure why people are falling over themselves about this film, maybe since it was Korean yet with an accessible story and familiar film language that it suddenly moved westerners to 'see the light'? Anyway, the second half twists and turns struck me more as a wacky story line I would have seen on a soap opera back in the day like Young and the Restless or Days of our Lives. Overall, I'm more critical of the critics than of the film. I recommend seeing this, it's worth a look but all the Oscars and 'best film of the decade' stuff is incomprehensible.
