A really unique movie!
As a Melanie Martinez fan, the movie really fullfilled my expectations! It was exactly as cute, pastel-coloured and in a good way "weird" as i expected a movie directed by Melanie to be. The costumes and in general the whole scenery was beautiful and mesmerizing. I was also very happy to see that social topics like sexism, bullying, LGBTQ+ and so on were being adressed.
Something that really negatively stood out to me was the story. I felt like it was all over the place and also a bit dull and cliché as if I could tell already what happens next. Most of the time when the characters spoke to each other the dialogues were very awkward and predictable and the facial expressions seemed forced.
Nevertheless I have to adress the music which played an important role in this musical, because it was really great! All the songs were 100% Melanie Martinez style and for every scene and mood in the movie, a fitting song was played. Even though i had the feeling that sometimes it could have needed a little bit more time between each song, i admire Melanie's creativity because she highlighted the message of every song by visuals, dances and costumes. For her first directed movie ever I must say she did a very decent job!
