What Happens Later (2023)
Are they in purgatory or am I?
I am honestly very confused at what I just watched. I went into the movie with high expectations as my friend is a huge David Duchovny fan, and I was excited to see what Meg Ryan and David Duchovny could do in a romcom; however, this was the furthest thing from one. At one point, I was grasping at straws trying to find one redeeming quality of this movie, landing on the idea that the the airport was an allegory of purgatory and they were both dead. The whole movie takes place in a fantastical empty airport where they are forever stuck. They interact with the airport PA system aka God throughout the whole movie. After the movie ended, I realized that there was no allegory and that the characters were just stuck at the airport because of a storm.
The dialogue was very nonsensical and felt like two elderly dementia patients rambling on and on. The characters were talking about their past which I thought should have been shown in scenes to at least break apart the monotonous dialogue.
Many of the plot points were confusing as well. Duchovny's character told Ryan's that they broke up because of her personality, and a dramatic piano key was inserted which really took me out of the movie. It felt like a whodunit. About 75% of the way through the movie, Ryan randomly revealed she had a miscarriage. David was also having a reoccurring hearing problem, and he would scream into the ether hoping for the airport music to stop playing cause it was causing his ears to ring. The characters also had the same name which was a little strange, and they kept talking about how magical Leap day is (the day the movie takes place on). Ryan's character did have a limp, but it didn't stop them from performing a dancing scene and then proceeding to ride around in an airport gold cart for about 20 minutes. It went on for so long that the comedy came back around towards the end. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not the intended audience, but I didn't enjoy this movie as much as I wanted to. #disappointed. Recommend seeing the movie with friends!
Mr. Harrigan's Phone (2022)
Written by a Boomer
This movie was awful. I thought the acting was good, but the movie had no real plot. The movie had a bunch of set ups that I thought were going to lead into key plot points. However, none of the set up mattered. For example there was an eerie closet that Mr. Harrigan says not to open because there are "secrets." At the end of the movie, the main character opens the closet to find a baby picture of Mr. Harrigan. How is that a secret? The Dad was the best character and actor in the movie. I was also very uncomfortable with the teacher-student relationship in the film. The movie made it seem like the main character had a love interest who only interacted with him through text. When he got attacked at the school dance he ditches his date to tell his teacher that she smells good. I believe the main take away from the movie is that phones and technology are taking over. I say if you want the lesson skip the movie and just get the lecture from your Dad!
Foster (2011)
Uncanny angel boy
I would just like to mention I was not able to watch the movie in its entirety because of how bad it was. First of all I'm a Toni Collette stand and have no idea how she ended up in this awful movie. I think it's my hatred of kids, but I was terrified. The movie was rather normal until the last 15 minutes when the creepy angel boy "watched over" Toni Collette giving birth. Don't even get me started on the weird Scottish accents. If you want to watch Toni Collette in a Christmas movie watch Krampus.
August: Osage County (2013)
Fantastic movie
I normally find it very difficult to enjoy movie adaptations of plays, but this was amazing. I cannot imagine anyone else playing the role of Violet Weston other than Meryl Streep. I was deeply moved by this film. There isn't one thing I can even put my finger other than it just made me feel something. I was completely encapsulated.
