Scarily realistic and disturbing
28 September 2003
Tracy, 13 (as per the title of the movie), enters 7th grade with a currently happy existence, until she is insulted by the "hottest girl in the school" Evvie. Tracy makes it her goal to be part of Evvie's world. She proves her self worthy of Evvie's acceptance by stealing. The girls soon become best friends. Evvie introduces Tracy to a whole new world of risk taking and experimenting. Tracy seems to welcome every new experience, all the while losing herself in the process. Tracy's relationship with her mother, played by Holly Hunter, at one time close, becomes one of dysfunction and uncertainty.

A parent can't really see something like this coming. There is nothing parents can do to prevent their child from entering into a world like Tracy does. You feel so helpless watching Tracy's mother, because you know there is no right way to handle the situation with her daughter.

Being a Social Worker, I had to tell everyone that has children or works with adolescents to see this movie. It's so scarily realistic, it disturbed me for days.

Would have been better as a play
16 February 2003
Living in the Buffalo area was not what made me go see this film. The plot summary on this website sounded like a cute story and it was.

There were many nice facets about this film, the actors were terrific, and I hope the Burton sisters have a future in the film industry. However, "Manna from Heaven" just didn't work as a feature film.

I could see this story become a successful play in the Buffalo area, like the classic "Over the Tavern". -Sorry, but better luck next time.
