Prisoners (2013)
what would you do?
Prisoners by Dennis Villeneuve is intense.
A hard hitting, emotionally distressing film that revolves around the disappearance of two young girls, constantly has audiences questioning what they would do in the situation presented.
The acting in this film is phenomenal, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman doing complete justice to the complex, intriguing characters they represent.
The film carries with it a sense of ambiguity, with many themes and morals being explored throughout.
Although the film travels in a slow and earnest manner, there are many incredibly gripping and dramatic scenes that are performed very well by the main cast.
With mainly rain, snow and storms the weather used also significantly adds to the all round atmosphere of the film by creating a dark, suspenseful and haunting mood.
I highly recommend to watch this film, if one is in the mood for a gritty, serious thriller with engaging acting performances. If IMDb provided a more inclusive rating system Prisoners would likely be closer to a 8.4 in my opinion.
Shutter Island (2010)
Which would be worse- to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?
The unexplainable escape of a murderess brings U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner (Mark Ruffalo) to Ashecliffe Hospital, a fortress-like insane asylum located on a remote, eery island. The woman appears to have vanished from a locked room, and there are hints of terrible deeds committed within the hospital walls. As the investigation progresses, Teddy realises he will have to confront his own dark fears if he hopes to make it off the island alive.
Or so he believes...
Based of the novel by Dennis Lehane, this film is exceptional. Scorsese invokes an immensely tense atmosphere from the start as we are brought into the troubled mind of Teddy Daniels.
The acting is quite simply put - exquisite. Not only were DiCaprio and Ruffalo's efforts incredible but an actor that perhaps was not as heavily praised was the great Ben Kingsley, who magnificently portrays a psychiatrist at the institute.
Many viewers were not fans of the ending, however, personally I enjoyed the twist and thought it to be a nicely done conclusion to the film.
Although I understand that at some points the film is a bit convoluted and slow, the direction and acting prove Shutter Island to be great picture.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Incredible, but not for everyone
This film is remarkable. I am aware it's somewhat cliché, but I feel obliged to say that The Wolf of Wall Street 'has it all'. From entertaining screenplay to impeccable acting by DiCaprio, Hill and the rest of the cast, the intriguing life of Jordan Belfort is divulged brilliantly.
Despite regarding this film so highly, I also understand that it is not for everyone. The Wolf of Wall Street, not strictly speaking, appeals more to a younger audience, and with its flashy cars and luxurious lifestyles it's easy to see why.
All in all though, I think I represent the majority of viewers by praising this film to such a degree. It would be redundant of me to explicitly recommend one to watch this movie... It really is a masterclass in film.
The Social Network (2010)
come on now zuckerberg!
Wow, that opening scene!
This film is quite something, not only does it beautifully portray an interesting plot but the acting... the acting is quite something. Eisenberg's portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg is performed to perfection.
Amazingly directed by Fincher and written by Sorkin the movie is presented in a very interesting manner.
This film portrays themes of betrayal, trust and university life. Definitely worth a watch, and one of Fincher's best works.
Gisaengchung (2019)
Quite frankly brilliant
This movie has it all. From a fascinating and creative storyline to intriguing characterisation, Bong Joon Ho captures the prevalent topics of greed and class based discrimination. Although many were not a fan of the films later half, personally I enjoyed the exciting, new developed dynamic that Ho presents. He entertains the viewer through immensely tense scenes that keep one on their toes - wondering where the plot is travelling. One can truly marvel at this accomplishment, and the vast majority of people will, I think, be perfectly content with the way that it finishes.
